The "Do Something! Anything!" Credo
People are calling for a nationwide boycott of Chipotle Mexican Grill.
The story, via Owen Darcy at The Blaze:
A spokesperson for Chipotle said that nine officers were trying to order food at a location in Brooklyn when an employee put his hands in the air.The gesture appeared to be in reference to the "hands up don't shoot" motion made by Ferguson protesters upset over the shooting death of Michael Brown.
The officers immediately left, according to WPIX, and some have since called for a boycott of the national chain.
On Monday, the CEO released a statement apologizing for the incident.
"An employee put his hands in the air."
That's right -- one guy employed by Chipotle.
Not because his boss told him he had to -- or anybody told him to do it.
Because he felt like it.
This is not cause to boycott an entire restaurant chain -- that is, unless you simply want to take action, and never mind whether it's justified.
More and more, you see that motivation -- or other equally bullshit motivations, like the people in Ferguson "protesting" police actions (that is, looting the businesses of people who had not a thing to do with the police or the policing).

I boycott Chipotle too--but mainly cuz it's a Californians bland out expensive "healthy" version of Mexican food.
Mexican food ain't supposed to be healthy.

I've never bothered to try Chipotle, mainly because I have never had tolerable Mexican food east of the Mississippi. I'm boycotting Brooklyn for my meaningless contribution to this farce.

I don't spend much money at Chipotle because woodchuck-sized burritos aren't that appealing to me. And by the way, just how healthful can a tortilla stuffed with rice really be?
But since slacktivism seems the order of the day, I suppose I could hit them with a really brutal hashtag, or maybe share something on Facebook. That'll show 'em!

It boils down to this: a lone employee acted unprofessionally in a single incident and cost the company business because he has an inability to check his politics at the door. Personally, if it were my call, I would fire the employee because idiots with sloppy impulse control aren't worth employing and send the officers an apology with some comp cards for a free meal. But, a boycott? Over this? Its unreasonable, haughty nonsense. They walked out and in doing so sent their message. End of incident.

Boycott as an over-the-top remedy.
Like the gay-lesbian boycott of El Coyote Mexican Restaurant in L.A. when an owner made a $100 contribution to a traditional marriage organization.

"Mexican food ain't supposed to be healthy."
Most Mexican food is. Oaxacan food is, certainly. You must be thinking of Tex-Mex food, or what they eat in the north of Mexico. that's probably full of lard and shit. Yeah. But that's Mexico's backlot anyway.
but I agree, Chipotle Grill isi crap.
"I don't spend much money at Chipotle because woodchuck-sized burritos aren't that appealing to me. And by the way, just how healthful can a tortilla stuffed with rice really be?"
Yep on both counts.
Now this is a sloid reason tha

You're right the less indigenous influenced stuff in the North is garbage and influenced by Americans, with too many dairy and lard products that Mexicans never consumed historically.
But Mexican food in general is full of carbs, which was my ain't healthy comment. You're supposed to eat alot of carbs for every meal including heavily sugared drinks.
Oaxaca is my #2. My favorite is from Veracruz since its seafood based and influenced by African slaves that escaped the Caribbean. Most Americans and other Mexicans don't know it exists or that there is a state in Mexico full of semi-black people.

The NYPD can just STFU about disrespect right now. Waah, waah, waah.

"We have taken appropriate actions with regard to the crew member involved, but we are not at liberty to discuss the specific actions taken."
In other words, they don't want to say if they fired the jerk or not because if they didn't one side will boycott and if they did the other side will boycott.
When all they want to do is sell food and all the cops wanted to do was eat.

I don't eat at Chipotle, it's just pricier Freebirds, but their stupid-ass socialistic to-go bag slogans would keep me away from there, even if I wanted to eat there otherwise. Don't charge me $14 for a burrito then hand it to me in a bag that talks about how great it would be if no one had to work and food were free for all.
Plus, this guy should have been fired. IMO. If I owned or managed the place, he would have been. Disrespecting customers is not a valid business plan.

9 full-grown, armed cops got chased out of a fast food restaurant by a wise guy? This is some fascinating news. Get him on the talk show circuit so we can learn the technique. Who knew they were so thin-skinned and sheepish?

Ppen,
"You're right the less indigenous influenced stuff in the North is garbage and influenced by Americans, with too many dairy and lard products that Mexicans never consumed historically."
The Spanish more than the Americans! It's the Spanish who brought wheat and made those flour tortillas I can't stand. But you are right in one way - it was American meat-packing plants that made commercial lard widely available, at least in northern Mexico.
"But Mexican food in general is full of carbs, which was my ain't healthy comment. "
Ah. Agree there.
Even Oaxacan food has its shortcomings. It's heart healthy but so deficient in calcium and protein that the normal height of an adult is like 4 ft. there. They are quite recognizable in the US.

David nailed it. Fire the employee, give the cops some gift cards. That's as far as it should go.
Daghain at December 31, 2014 5:38 PM
I'd fire the employee, but rather than give the cops free money for not doing anything I'd remark how sad it is that cops are A) so easily offended, and B) that average citizens have a rational fear that the cops might kill them

Went to a wedding in Mexico in the spring. Our friends are quite well off. We went from one gated, guarded community to another, watching Mexico from the vehicles.
Not sure how many attended, but I counted approx. 50 staff at the reception.
Didn't eat any "mexican" food until we sought out a taco shop.
It's also a matter of class.
