College Administrators Confuse Freshman Year In College With Freshman Year In Nursery School
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is considering banning a smartphone app called Yik Yak that allows users to post anonymously to a local bulletin board.
Arielle Clay posts at WRAL:
During the height of the "Black Lives Matter" protests on campus last fall, for example, one person posted, "I really hate blacks, I'm going home where there aren't any."Another poster said, "the way blacks are acting right now kind of justify a slavery."
Winkfield said the anonymous posts scare her and are making her increasingly distrustful.
"These are people we are going to class with, people who we see every day, and they might have some type of ill will toward us," she said.
Yeah, better that you have no idea of that ill will, bright girl.
And newsflash to overpaid genius administrators: There are a whole lot of forums that allow users to post anonymously. They're called "blogs." Mine is one of them. I just prefer (but don't demand) that you use the same name to post so you have a sort of identity -- that you're always "Gog Magog Carpet Reclaimer" or "Up Your Butt With A Sharp Object."
Oh, and please support campus free speech defenders theFIRE.org, who, sadly, are needed now more than ever, as college administrators are so busy using the Constitution to clean the windows of their McMansions.

As a (sadly? not overpaid...) college administrator, I both love you and your support of FIRE! :)

Aw, thanks, mike. For being for FIRE, you're clearly one of the good guys.

"Yeah, better that you have no idea of that ill will, bright girl."
Sadly, Amy, I think a lot of folks would prefer that - Don't do anything to upset me!
And, really, if these posts so upset her why on earth is she reading them and keeping a list of them?
Maybe the thought of posting her own counter posts didn't occur to her?

That's an awful lot like work. Better to bring the full power of the state and its monopoly on force to do the actual work for you.
Gruppenthink: you seem to want it, UNC.

And I'm still miffed "UYBWASO" was taken and I had to use the family name instead.
Gog_Magog_Carpet_Reclaimers at February 8, 2015 8:53 AM
Good luck with that UNC.... Even blocking traffic to/from the website won't really slow down anyone using it. So you switch to your Cellular data to use it... woo, tough.
I wonder if Universities trying to "block" things like this might cause a repeat of what happened with usenet back in the day. As soon as places started filtering out groups they didn't like/want, they found they were now on the hook for filtering ALL content. Most went right back to not filtering anything because it's impossible to filter all of it (if it weren't spam wouldn't exist). Or at least that's my understanding.
Oh, and this is classic. I pulled up the app store and looked at the thing, having not heard of it before. One of the "recommended/related" apps on the same page? A "Menstruation and Ovulation tracking Calendar." So, read into that what you will about the main demographic of said app.

I, for one, despise Yik Yak. I probably wouldn't know a dang thing about it if it weren't for my high schoolers. I think it's toxic, expecially to the younger minds. It's completely anonymous and I've seen complete lies spread like wildfire. H.B. has a stinky Vjay. C.M. is a snowbunny. Kill all the snowbunnies. T.R. and J.W. have a lesbo video. Watch it here!! And the stuff I've ready about n*ggers and what everyone wants to do to them - seriously, it's the gossip column's live version on steroids. And it's not healthy. Do teenagers really need a social network dedicated to posting anonymous filth? You think you've been overrun by the bullying PSAs, but this right here is just an open forum for bullies to spread lies and even truths that are nobody's business. I used to lecture mine about thinking before you speak, that words can't be unsaid. But this website is on a whole other level.

I've read web comments suggesting the reason for the rising level of vocalized discomfort with Blacks is because people have had it up to here after six years of the Obama administration and the Leftist matrix race-ifying the nation and every aspect of cultural, political, social, and economic life.
Some think a reaction against that agitprop, and against the likes of the "Rape Culture" and "War-On-Women" campaigns, goes a long way toward explaining why the Democrats got creamed in the last election.
Lastango at February 8, 2015 1:23 PM
When we ask why race is a screwy issue in the USA, it's always wise to turn to the experts and their muffins.
Blake Lively's Stud Muffins, for example, commemorating the black struggle just in time for Valentine's Day.

> this website is on a whole
> other level.
Yes, and that level has a name: Adulthood. If it's too high for you, don't visit it. If it's too high for your kids, don't let them visit it.
So, like, this will be a private matter for you, and I don't understand why you're offering this complaint... Unless you're preparing a demand for censorship of some kind. And that will not be permitted.
The adult world is full of sharp edges and hot surfaces. Teaching your children to negotiate that world is not the responsibility of others... People who sometimes needs those tools for good purposes, and who aren't threatened by the risks. The world is full of rage and madness, currents which your children will be expected to elide or deal with. Ain't my problem.
Do not fuck with the free expression of ideas.

Lastango, you could be right, but I think most of it is just old-fashioned chain-yanking. Anonymously publish something controversial and vaguely threatening, and watch the fun as the usual suspects get worked up over it. It's been around for as long as there have been teenagers.
Cousin Dave at February 9, 2015 7:53 AM
that app isn't aimed at adults, it's aimed at teenagers. just because something is an idea and involves free speech, doesn't mean it's a good idea for those too young to be able to handle it. This one is better left alone. there's nothing good coming out of it. no free thinking other than "how can i best tear someone down so that I feel an itty bit better" going on. Supposedly it uses a geofence around middle schools/high schools, but that doesn't keep you from the Yak unless you are on school grounds.
From it's Wiki page: One of the biggest criticisms of social media sites and applications is their inherent potential to feed the growing issue of cyber-bullying.[10] Due to the widespread bullying and harassment committed through Yik Yak, many schools and school districts have taken action to ban the app. These include several Chicago school districts,[11] Norwich University in Vermont,[12] Eanes Independent School District in Texas,[13] Lincoln High School district in Rhode Island,[14] New Richmond School District in Ohio,[15] and Pueblo County School District in Colorado.[16] Tatum High School in New Mexico banned cell phone use from the school due to Yik Yak,[17] and, as of October 2, 2014, the Student Government Association at Emory University in Georgia is pushing for a resolution to ban the app across campus.[18]
In Canada, the app has also caused waves in various secondary schools.
On October 3, 2014, The Huffington Post published an editorial titled "Why Your College Campus Should Ban Yik Yak," which asserted that Yik Yak's anonymous messaging boards "are like bathroom stalls without toilets. They're useless, they're sources of unhelpful or harmful conversations, and they're a complete eyesore."[19]

> that app isn't aimed at adults,
> it's aimed at teenagers.
So what? Terrible things are "aimed at teenagers" all the time... Ludicrously erotic fashions and turbocharged motorcycles and illicit drugs and so much more.
Do you really think we should take Chicago's advice on anything? On the safety of children? Canada?
Huffpo is full of shit... They should be taken off the internet immediately.
See how that works?
