Most come with a little light. The other note is something on the screen copying to the drive. If you aren't actively accessing the drive (moving data to or from) then it shouldn't matter if you unplug it. If it does your OS is improperly using writeback caching on a volatile media.

Given that I've seen a flash drive get unreadable after someone did a snatch-n-grab without a proper eject, yeah, do a proper eject. It's much less time consuming than trying to recreate the contents of the drive.
Why, yes, that was a Windows OS. How did you know?

Under win7 (and I assume most of the others) you can do that. Change the device connect sound.
