But Why Should Anybody Get Jail Time For Soliciting A Prostitute?
An 87-year-old man, who isn't ready to pack up the sexparts just yet, got arrested in Grand Rapids, Michigan when the prostitute he solicited turned out to be an undercover cop posing as a prostitute.
First of all, this low-hanging fruit policing should not be going on. It is none of the government's business if two consenting adults want to trade money for an old table -- or, sorry, can't resist, want to trade money for one blowing the other on the old table.
But, as Barton Delters writes for MLive.com:
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The 87-year-old man police say was soliciting an undercover cop posing as a prostitute will not be prosecuted."What would be the purpose in prosecuting him? " Kent County Prosecutor William Forsyth said Tuesday, Sept. 1. "He wouldn't and shouldn't go to jail and 87 years without involvement in the criminal justice system has, in my opinion, earned him a pass."
Howard Arthur Klein, likely the oldest person ever charged with this crime, was arrested by Grand Rapids Police around 10 p.m. June 26, near Broadway Street NW and Leonard Avenue, not far from his home.
...Klein faced a maximum of 93 days in the Kent County Jail if convicted.
"I could see no compelling reason to continue to prosecute Mr. Klein on the ticket he was issued for accosting and soliciting," Forsyth said. "He is 87 years old with absolutely no criminal record. In addition, I am told he struggles to some degree with dementia."
What I want to know is why you're prosecuting other people and possibly throwing them in jail?
P.S. You go, grandpa!

This country has never fully accepted the concept of freedom, which is under constant attack from both the liberal left and the religious right, with sad consequences.

PS: I hope I'm still frisky at age 87.

I call old people teenagers 2.0. They're really sexual.
Old ladies, with Alzheimer's must be the reincarnated teen boys with none of the social pressure to uh not get naked and sexual around you.
Funny story my bichon frise used to get taken hostage at a nursing home by an aggressive old lady.

Was that some kind of reference to Mr. Klein's 87-year-old anatomy?

I have to wonder if Amy would be so magnanimous with street walkers...errr...hookers...errr...escorts hawking their wares in front of her house at all hours of the day, and the resulting vehicular traffic?
I R A Darth Aggie at September 7, 2015 6:26 AM
IRA, if it were legal, they could advertise online, arrange to meet via text, no street walking necessary. Street walking started because it was a way to meet clients, while having a pseudo-excuse of doing anything but. (Me? I'm just waiting for a friend!)
I wouldn't be with someone who used a hooker, but it shouldn't be illegal. I STILL can't figure out why someone can pay 2 other people to have sex in front of them and it's not illegal if there's camera, but you can't pay someone to have sex WITH you. (unless maybe there's a camera? I get confused...)
momof4 at September 7, 2015 6:38 AM
It is just the camera bit Momof4. They must be of legal age, you need to fill out all the tax forms, and you must retain the video to demonstrate the video was the goal and not the sex.
Also, if it was legal then it can be regulated just like any other business. I don't want hookers hanging out in front of my house. But I don't want taco trucks there either. Conduct your business on your own property.

Think this article proves Amy's basic point (hope I'm right) that gov't should simply butt out (ha ha) of regulating/managing some things.
For me, I'm for letting the law against physical abuses cover the appropriate issues and assume the rest of it is small stuff.
"The case can be made that the “independent worker” is a myth. No one can truly work independently within a system that requires people to work in specific areas of town, and in certain establishments like sex clubs and window brothels. ... Metje mentions that before prostitution became legal, the women actually had more autonomy over themselves and their work; now, they have less freedom. They are easily controlled, not only by pimps who offer to pay rent and other services, but by the system itself."

I'm wondering if they would cut some slack for a 70 year old. Wondering for a friend of course.

In response to Mr. Forsyth's remarks, Mr. Klein said "To some degree? Some degree??! Dementia and I struggle really intensely. I get turned on by dominant strong women and it's the reason I usually hire her."

I would like to offer a some information and a couple of suggestions that might be helpful to inexperienced, would-be whore mongers, like the 87 year old man. This is based on my experience working for the health department and in health service at a big jail, where I had the opportunity to provide health assessments and healthcare services for a couple thousand hos. The hos ranged from a repugnant, putrid, 275 pound beast who would... (I don't even want to think about what)... with equally repugnant men, for as little as 25 cents (literally a two-bit whore); and a 29 year old with cerebral palsy, who could barely speak, buzzed around in a motorized wheel chair, charged $2 for a blow job, always tried to get away when the cops came, and always took a shit in the back of the police car on the way to jail ... to a stunningly attractive, smart, articulate, 21 year old sociopath, who called herself an escort, charged $400 an hour, and whose boyfriend, who was also her pimp, was a cop.
1. If a clean, good looking, nicely groomed young woman in a whore costume comes up to you on the street and offers you a blow job for $20, ask yourself, "Why would a good looking young thing like her want to blow a loser like me for $20?" The answer is, "She wouldn't." She's a cop. A clean, reasonably well groomed young woman can easily sell sex in a much safer environment for more than 20 or 30 or 50 dollars.
2. If a hooker solicits you on the street, get her to smile. If she has clean, nice teeth, she's a cop. (Beware: some cops will make their teeth look all slimy and repulsive to fool you)
3. Check her tat-to-tooth ratio. This number is estimated by dividing the approximate number of crappy, amateur tattoos visible on her body by the approximate number of teeth she has left. The higher the ratio, the more likely she's a legitimate ho. A low tat-to-tooth ratio means she's a cop. So, 1 tattoo/28 teeth = 0.036 = cop; 11 tattoos/14 teeth = 0.79 = ho. Anything higher than a 0.07, you should probably say something polite and legal, and leave the area. Also, crack hos don't have professionally done, $500 tattoos. If you see even one nice tattoo, she's probably a cop. Leave the area.
4. Sexually transmitted diseases are a given. Of the couple thousand whores I've provided health care services for, there was not a single one who did not have at least one STD; most had two or more. About a third had hepatitis C. A few had HIV, knew they had it, and were still hooking.

This is Boston-specific, but, sadly, I suspect this is the case in most of the US.

This hardly seems possible, but being a prostitute now is even more awful than it used to be.
Back in the 1980s, when Audrey Morrissey was in the life, things were more clear-cut. Working the Combat Zone, she was, by design, highly visible. She could see and be seen, sizing up johns before she got in their cars or went with them into alleys. She could demand to see a license or have a friend take down a plate number. If she got into trouble, people would know and hear her screams. They might even help.
"I'm not saying horrific things didn't happen," said Morrissey, now 52 and assistant director of antitrafficking group My Life My Choice. She was robbed, raped, beaten, and had knives and guns held to her. "I know quite a few girls who were murdered. But it's more dangerous today . . . because it's invisible."
The Web has driven the sex industry deep into the shadows, where buyers and pimps are protected, victims are out of view, and the rest of us don't have to think about it. Not until it bursts into the open, as it did two weeks ago, when Sanisha Johnson was murdered in a Burlington hotel room, allegedly by two men who were making a night of robbing prostitutes they'd found through backpage.com ads...
