Sad Puppy Gender Studies Prof Cries Hard On Her Barack Obama Placemats
This op-ed in the Democrat and Chronicle by Barbara LeSavoy (pictured at the link) seems to be a parody. But then you Google the writer's name and see that she actually exists. Here's some of what she wrote in the paper, in her call for Obama to ban guns:
I urge President Obama to ban firearm possession in America. He is the president of the United States. He can change the country. He can do it today. I believe in him.I voted for Barack Obama. Twice. During his 2008 presidential campaign, my two daughters, partner, and I ate every meal in our house on Obama placemats. We bought these at our local supermarket, plastic-coated, plate-sized paper rectangles with an image of his face framed by colors of the flag. While politically minded, I am not overly patriotic, so this mealtime ritual of American allegiance was odd for me. Still, we looked at the image of his face each day and we believed that he really could be the change in America.
...As Obama's 2012 campaign approached, I was a little jaded. Some of his promises to our country did not come true, and I was anxious about rising social tensions he and his administration faced. Racial inequality plagued the news, gender-based violence grew in global proportion, and women's reproductive freedoms had become increasingly vulnerable.
Still, I did not waver. I dug into our old dining room cupboards, and found our worn but resilient Obama placements. I dusted them off, and once again, my family and I ate all of our meals looking at his image. In his presidency, we still imagined a country on the edge of change.
...This is his legacy. To establish gun control laws in America that will reduce high levels of male violence and usher in a culture of peace and civility.
Barack Obama is the president of the United States. He can change the country. He can do it today. I believe in him.
Guess it's too much to expect a gender studies professor with a girl crush on the President to have heard of the Second Amendment.

"Today, I write this letter with a bleeding heart. I admire Obama. "
That's all that really needs to be said. But, let's go on. Mr. Obama is in charge of the most powerful military force the world has ever known. The United States has troops deployed in 150 countries. We're the world's biggest arms dealer. Obama himself is a proven murderer. His drone strikes and undeclared "boots on the ground" hostilities are a constant in the Middle East. He has no use for gun control.
What would it take to bring a person like Barbara LeSavoy back to reality? In fact, to save her from her delusions?

Gun control is hitting your target every single time.

How can she believe this drivel? I honestly can't fathom how anyone could believe this.

Cultist.
The same kind of behavior I see surrounding most tyrants.
"I am not overly patriotic, so this mealtime ritual of American allegiance (eating on Obama place mats) * * *."
Very odd and alarming that she equates her obsession with Obama as an act of patriotism. As creepy as the video of young school children - after his election - singing their loyalty to Obama like Young Pioneers would do in the Soviet Union.

President Obama cannot ban firearm ownership. Not by himself, at least.
And there's something slightly creepy about someone who owns Barack Obama placemats.

BIG believer in gun control.
Proper stance, good aim, trigger-finger placement and a gentle squeeze.
After all, ammo ain't cheap. . . (grin)

Perhaps I was being too kind, but there was one tribute to Barack Obama that I saw when he was first running. It was a bunch of children singing an original song about Obama in the loftiest (and most unrealistic) terms. My liberal friends all thought it was adorable. I thought it was creepy, even child abuse. Compared this unsettling crap, the whole placemat thing seems rather tame.
If you haven't seen it before, be warned: it will make your skin crawl.
Patrick at October 31, 2015 6:50 AM
No wonder New Yorkers are leaving their state in droves and moving to Texas. To stay they have to pay sky high taxes to fund the livelihood and pension of this drone at a so called NY state university. What on earth has our country come to that this idiot is allowed to confuse and indoctrinate young people in so called Women's studies at a college and call it education.
I am sure Amy appreciates that her base BS degree is in "elementry education". She is obviously so deeply educated and prepared for her profession.
God help our country!

Canvasback, don't forget Operation Fast & Furious, which walked several hundred weapons into Mexico which has been tied to at least 300 murders in Mexico side, and probably more than a few on ours.
That's just all kinds of wrong, and it never had a chance of success. Which was intentional, as the gun walking wasn't the target, but ginning up fervor for more gun control was.
I R A Darth Aggie at October 31, 2015 7:51 AM
Darth,
I am no fan of the BATFE, but I suspect Fast & Furious is more simply an example of incredible incompetence by a federal agency trying to justify its existence and federal funding.
BATFE should have been eliminated long ago and its criminal investigation role assigned to the FBI. I believe it started in the Treasury Dept for the purpose of enforcing federal taxes on alcohol, tobacco and firearms. However, like most federal agencies it has experienced substantial mission creep.

Gun control remains a leftist fantasy. Getting rid of legally-owned guns will bring peace and prosperity to all. Illegally-owned guns will disappear since all illegally-owned guns started out as legally-owned guns. Those crackpot "from my cold dead hands" rednecks will be forced to admit the superiority of liberal thinking and accept being ruled by their liberal overlords.
Gun ownership for all remains a conservative fantasy. Everybody will own and carry guns and by virtue of that universal carry, society will become polite and civil. Crime will disappear because any house you break into will be an armed house, any person you rob will be an armed person. No one will leave a loaded gun lying around a daycare for a child to accidentally fire or shoot it out in the parking lot of a grocery store over shoplifting (both recently in the news).
The truth is somewhere in the middle. Not everyone should be armed, but not everyone should be disarmed either.
Bernie Sanders wants gun ownership limited to hunters - because he thinks the Second Amendment was included in the Constitution to protect Americans' rights to hunt (and that exempting hunters from gun control will get him votes). He's an idiot. It was included in the Constitution to enable the citizenry to quickly form an armed force to protect itself from hostile marauders and from an authoritarian government.
Our Founding Fathers did not trust a strong central government - based on what they'd seen in the world (divine right kings, Catholic vs. Protestant pogroms, Spanish Inquisition, Oliver Cromwell, etc.). And based on what we've seen in the world since then (Soviet Union, Maoism, Pol Pot, Erich Honecker, Castroism, Naziism, Peronism) why do we?

I think you will find most conservatives don't have this fantasy.
We see gun ownership like the herd immunity that vaccination provides.
We want enough responsible people to be armed that all criminals find robbery, burglary, assault, and carjacking a very risky proposition.
Nothing is going to stop all crime. We just want to make sure responsible people are allowed the freedom to protect themselves.

Both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have expressed admiration for Australia's gun buy-back program wherein he government purchased weapons from the its citizens. Both have proposed that such a program could be instituted in this country.
What they don't mention is that the program was compulsory and amounted to confiscation.
In addition to the buy-back, Australian law included a ban on many types of semi-automatic, self-loading rifles and shotguns. Each gun required a separate permit with a 28-day waiting period, and Australia created a national firearms registration system. Guns could only be sold by licensed firearms dealers, and limits were placed on the amount of ammunition that could be sold. Firearm owners had to be 18, complete a safety course, and have a "genuine reason" for owning a gun, such as sport shooting, hunting, or occupational requirements ("personal protection" did not count as a legitimate reason). Licenses expired every five years, and could be revoked if police found "reliable evidence of a mental or physical condition which would render the applicant unsuitable for owning, possessing or using a firearm." [New York Magazine]
What they also fail to mention is that the program failed. The incidence of violent crimes in Australia increased in the first year after the citizenry was disarmed.
Now, 3.2% doesn't seem like much of an increase, unless you're one of the victims. Overall, firearm-related homicides in the state of Victoria have increased by 300%.
Did the buyback work? No. Australia’s population grew by 19% since the buy-back. The total number of guns in the country has grown by 455% in the same period. Armed robberies increased immediately after the buyback but have declined over time as gun ownership increased.
What about mass shootings? Australia defines a "mass shooting" as one in which at least four people are fatally shot by a single gunman. Australia has had several shootings in which fewer than four have been killed - e.g., Monash University in 2002, Hectorville in 2011, and Sydney in 2014.
Nonetheless, the Australian confiscation remains attractive to liberal politicians. Rightist fantasy? I think not.

Oh, Christ, I was at Brockport for a couple of years. The only thing that distinguished the school was a preponderance of unattractive women.
In the middle of my time there, they instituted a requirement that every student take a set of indoctrination courses in order to graduate. Things like the history of women's rights and the plight of the black people and rubbish like that. I am proud to say I didn't graduate and am still 15 credits short of a degree (the indoctrination credits).
This all was decades ago. I went by there a few years ago. The place is a ghetto.
