Ten Ways Backward Companies Treat Their Employees Like Children
Bereavement leave policies that require employees to bring in a funeral notice to prove that a family member died are perfect evidence of a fear-based culture. If you don’t trust your employees to ask for and receive two or three days’ paid time off when a family member passes on, why do you have them on your payroll at all?
It is a slap in the face to ask an employee at such a difficult time to prove that something so raw and personal has happened. His or her whole department knows the sad story of the family member’s illness or accident. This shameful policy has no place in a modern organization.
There are times I lament my bachelorhood, but most of the time I feel like a stinking genius:
A Tuesday night town meeting in Spring Valley, NY devolved into chaos after a constituent accused Mayor Demeza Delhomme of having sex with his wife and ruining his marriage.
...
Delhomme vehemently denied Alfred’s claim, stating, “I don’t know this man. I’ve never met this man.”
However, two Spring Valley trustees defended Alfred, asking the mayor, “you screwed his wife and you say you don’t know him?”
I'm reminded that the internet sees censorship as a form of network disruption and routes around it. I'm also reminded of this:
Beware of he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master.

I believe you IRA. I identify as an atemporal amoebic entity. We really need to stop the temporal oppression around here. Yesterday, today, tomorrow. How can you discriminate so? They are all just nodes on an eight vector field. Order them however you want. Just don't tell me how to order my days!

Yelp employee is fired over open letter to CEO complaining about low pay and high rent.
"So here I am, 25-years old, balancing all sorts of debt and trying to pave a life for myself that doesn’t involve crying in the bathtub every week. Every single one of my coworkers is struggling. They’re taking side jobs, they’re living at home. One of them started a GoFundMe because she couldn’t pay her rent." ~ Talia Jane, Yelp employee
AND
And the cities where labor markets are booming — San Francisco, but also New York, Washington, DC, Boston, and Seattle, among others — also have skyrocketing costs of living, in part because of their restrictions on building new housing. [emphasis mine]
Nearly 30 percent of 2012 college graduates ages 25 to 34 moved to San Francisco, DC, New York, and Austin, according to reporting from the New York Times. Those are exactly the cities that are becoming the most expensive to live in. The median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco is $3,200 per month.
Jane pays $1,250 for rent, about $120 for gas and electric, and $11.30 a day to commute to and from work. She said she makes approximately $1,500 a month; according to Glassdoor, Yelp customer service employees make around $12 an hour. Factor in the price of food (and we will put away the idea of eating healthy in this equation), and the numbers don't match up.
Stoppelman, a 38-year-old who has been featured on the Fortune 40 under 40 list, recognized this disparity in his response, tweeting that he acknowledged the cost of living in San Francisco was too high.
Stoppelman's solution is to move Yelp's entry-level jobs to less expensive areas, like Arizona, where $12 an hour is closer to a living wage.
But telling the approximately 115,000 people living below the poverty line in the San Francisco area that they should move to Arizona sounds like a complicated solution.
Complicated solution? Not really. Move to where you can afford to live.
"They are all just nodes on an eight vector field."
That's cute. Anyway...

Because you have been forced to take on employees with no link to their performance or skill set, that's why, and the general knowledge of cow-orkers isn't evidence to Payroll.
People suck. In NYC, they staged a bus crash to see what happens because there were more injury claims from such a crash than there were tickets in the till, and sure enough, after the crash, people rushed to get on the bus to be found there when the cops arrive, so they could file injury claims, too.

"Bereavement leave policies that require employees to bring in a funeral notice to prove that a family member died are perfect evidence of a fear-based culture."
Maybe; but, more likely it is because some folks have several "grandparents" die all the time; especially with their funerals scheduled for a Friday just before a Monday holiday. "Dear ol' granny is still looking out for me; she loved me so much she gets me a four-day weekend"
And really, it isn't that hard to show a copy of the obituary; heck, nowadays it is easier as most obits are on the funeral homes' website.
If someone considers that to be a "slap in the face" then they haven't worked for some of the assholes that I've worked for. They should quit their bitchin' and be glad that they have a paycheck.

And I thought the diaspora of California has happened for a while now. They just aren't all going to the same place. I know in Texas they only feel comfortable around Austin. In Dallas or Houston they tend to move out after a year or so. Which is a good thing. We have enough morons already. We don't need another moron voting block moving in.
