So anyway, we're all looking around and wondering why things are so fucked up.
Here's two pieces that explain some of it. This was linked by Cosh recently. This came from who-knows-where three years ago.
The best religions instill humility. Taking away religion doesn't end magical thinking... People then merely presume that their impulses are actually principles.
It feels like we're facing more sanctimony than ever. (Remember that every time some columnist or personality points out that Trump is a liar or whatnot. It's true, but his voters know that trusting other figures in public life to behave honestly is a non-starter... So, essentially, fuckit.)
Thank you Crid. So many people oppose religion because of magic thinking and ignore that the secular use just as much.
As for the rising sanctimony I blame the self esteem movement. If everyone is a winner then the bar has to be set pretty low. If everyone tells you you are a super genius all the time you never learn that sometimes you are a moron. It leads to a really bipolar view of the world.
(I apologize for the violent act I am about to commit) That Pink song Perfect really encapsulates it for me. You are either worthless or perfection. Nothing in the middle exists. That is why millennials swing from sanctimonious pricks who think the sun shines out of their asses to huddled wretches curled up weeping on the floor. There is no middle ground. You can't be mostly right or even struggling but getting there. You are either the most perfect being that ever existed or you are a worthless piece of crap and should die.
The secret to becoming wealthy has been revealed, and it uses this one weird trick:
The secret to getting rich is as powerful as it is unexciting: live below your means.
That’s it. The bigger the difference between what you earn and what you spend, the sooner you’ll find yourself with enough money to do what you want with your life.
Now, I realize that “live below your means” may sound obvious or trite. That doesn’t make it easy. It’s actually much harder than it sounds. Many of the people you see with big houses and fancy cars are up to their eyeballs in debt, which means they’re violating this basic principle. They aren’t rich at all. They’re in debt.
I was going to add "unexpectedly", but my irony meter broke and it just points in the direction of a Nobel Peace Prize...

I enjoy your commentators too. It breaks my heart
that you don't seem to make good money doing this
work. The internet is very wonderful as far it goes, but it seems to be killing the model for content creation. Writing, music, art, shit is driving out quality and there is no money in it anymore. We need a new model to make it work for
people like you. Viva the Rambler!

How's that nationalized healthcare working out for you?
IBD: Health Premiums Have Climbed $4,865 Since Obama Promised to Cut Them $2,500

Pretty well actually. My recent liver and kidney transplant have cost over $3million, and my Blue Cross insurance policy, which only few years ago had a $1million lifetime limit, has paid for almost all of it.
So yeah, Thanks Obama.

You should be thinking the people whose premiums have almost doubled. They're the ones who paid for your operations. And not by choice; there was a gun to their heads.

And that gun is losing effectiveness Conan. I've chosen $3k in taxes instead of $10k in premiums that don't include health care. Eric is lucky he didn't get sick five years from now. The Obamacare death spiral is in full swing.
A can of Schlitz would, by now, be very schlinky... even schlinkier than it was back in the day.
