There's some great vintage signage in Los Angeles. Photo purloined from the phone of Gregg Sutter.

I remember that sign! For those who don't know, Felix the Cat was one of the first animated cartoon characters, going back to the silent-film era. Fun fact: the first image ever transmitted on over-the-air television was a shot of a Felix the Cat statuette on a turntable, by RCA's W2XBS experimental station in 1928.

My family used to drive through Los Angeles on the way back from visiting relatives at Easter, Thanksgiving, etc. and I always would sit up in the back seat to see the glittering downtown skyline on the north and the neon Felix to the south. Great memory.

The late, lamented Doggie Diner and its iconic sign in San Francisco.

Marietta, Georgia's Big Chicken became an Atlanta area landmark, and is often included in directions given to out-of-towners ("turn left at the big chicken"). It was even included in a video game.

Wow - love those signs. Somebody should do a book of these. (Probably about 50 such books exist.)
