Caldwell is brilliant. He's not an electrifying speaker, but he is brilliant in this analysis of Europe. He starts talking at about 4:20. By forty minutes you'll be squirming in your seat. I literally needed a break, just because it's unpleasant. It's a long video long because it's not a short sequence of events, and we need to know it all. (Amy- hear especially his analysis of Paris.)
That is in a nutshell why I never expected the EU to survive. It is a dictatorship with democratic tendencies. Eventually the 'elites' lose all connection with the greater population. And without that connection they then lose their support. When no one will follow their orders they become powerless and their government fall apart. Hence the strong reaction by EU officials. They fear that no only Britain is leaving, but quite possibly all of southern Europe.

That's most of the PIIGS (Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece, and Spain). I don't think Brussels would mind so much, as long as they repay their loans with euros.
The loss of the UK is more painful that the loss of southern Europe would have been.

Nah, they'd simply repudiate the loans (or pay them back with near-worthless native currency), and then Germany in particular is left holding the bag.

You don't get it IRA. It really isn't about money. It is about European unity and conquest. These are the same people who spout off about international law and one world government. They believe at a very core religious level that all religion is evil (talk about your paradoxes) and that their victory is inherently inevitable. 'The moral arc of history bends towards justice' and all that. People willingly leaving the EU is considered at first unthinkable and secondly inherently evil.
As for the PIIGS, it is not possible for them to pay back those loans. Just aint going to happen. But if they leave the EU then the German and French banks have to fess up to that reality, at which point they realize they are bankrupt too. The current policy of just kicking the can down the road is only making things worse. Eventually they won't be able to delay the accounting. And the longer the delay the bigger the crash.
