Old RPM Daddy: It's a tiny planet. The other day you happened to mention that the actress had survived a famine, one I'd not heard of...

...Today I happened to listen to two podcasts with a biology professor who described the remarkable statistical consequences of that (brief) famine; basically unimpeded growth and health in adult except for a doubling of schizophrenia. This obviously was not an issue for the movie star, but he name-checked her anyway in the second podcast.

re Crid,
Loved the comments in that Szabo thread.
"Justice for all or peace for none." LOL!
Do I get to decide that the protester blocking my attempt to get my daughter to the hospital is acting illegally and that non-police action is needed now?
Do I get to decide that the protester attempting to set the gas station a block away from my home is endangering my family?
It's simple really. Law abiding citizens (like those ambushed Trump supporters) are screwed by the lawless and the "government" because law abiding citizens put their faith in others.
I blame Obama for not having a serious heart to heart talk w/his black people about what's the right way to protest and confront injustice. A white guy/gal just is not going to be listened to.

Just his black people. Should he also have had a serious heart-to-heart talk with Trump's African-American? How about with that rapper's location-challenged n***az? Maybe he should have brought it up at the weekly meeting. ;-)

Actually, I found some of them a bit over the top. Uber, Bitcoin, and AirBnB being functionally equivalent to violent lawbreaking seemed a bit much.

Exactly... He doesn't have any. We haven't noticed people of any color listening to him in adoration with intent to follow his directions for a life well-lived. He's just a politician. Whites and blacks and everyone else who voted for him love him because aside from the typical lefty cant, he doesn't demand anything of anyone. Reagan didn't either.
Carter told everyone to drop the thermostat and slip into a cardigan: Look what it got him.
Another reason why the Internet of Things might not be a great idea: Nest thermostats go offline and malfunction. I'm seeing different reports on just how bad the problem was, but it appears that at least some Nests quit working altogether.
(My automated thermostats, which run off of my server within my LAN, continue to work just fine.)

CD: This is not a good day for them to have this problem.
So far, nobody has died from the contaminated waters hosting Olympic events in Rio, but at least one athlete has fallen seriously ill. A few hundred million people, including me, have now scratched off from our bucket lists the idea of bathing at Copacabana now that we know that feces, animal carcasses, and garbage would be our companions in the Bay. I have to wonder if the anticipated payoff for Brazilian tourism from hosting the Olympics will ever develop now that the world understands the shortcomings of Brazilian public sanitation.

I've thought about going with a Nest type of device, but I hesitated because my non-smart thermostat does a decent job. Then this happened:

and then this became a thing:
