Forest Falls resident Alycia Wheeler, 48, said in an interview that she was “crushed” to learn of the killing when she saw a photo of the dead bear posted on Facebook. She recognized it as the animal she had seen roaming her yard almost daily and had named Big Red for the distinct color of its fur.
Wheeler doesn’t blame Strauja but worries she did not exhaust all other options before going to the extreme of killing the animal.
I'm sorry, what? A bear that has become inured to humans is a danger.
"If countries are going to impose ridiculous rules like this on their athletes, maybe it's better we just abolish the Olympics permanently."
You think this set of rules is "ridiculous"?
Have you really not noticed the record of conduct this man had? Do you really think that the investment of a team should be put at risk in a foreign country, where the obviously judgment-impaired athlete has no idea of local risks? Where the team manager would probably NOT be able to contact him, oh, to say that the meet schedule has changed?
How'd you like to be the athlete, team or nation whose guy lost all chances because he missed the performance? That's happened.
Instead, you seem to favor his sponsors saying, "Oh, yeah - do what you want. We'll count on your making your meet times all on your own."
Gotcha.

Instapundit on the boondoggle that is biofuel subsidies:
What the Greens failed to understand is that if you prop up corn prices by buying, distilling and burning massive amounts of corn whisky in cars, two things are going to happen. One the price is going to go up, making things like cow feed and other uses of corn more expensive and 2. farmer are going to, without restraints, plant ever larger amounts of corn, which will 1. push out other crops like wheat and 2. require more land use to plant even more corn. Which is why you can now go from Eastern Colorado to Western NY and essentially see nothing but corn.
A significant portion of that crop from Colorado to about the Missouri River must be irrigated. Even in Iowa you'll see irrigation equipment. Corn is a thirsty crop.
Seems to me polygamy should be easy enough to oppose.
Namely, since it's typically about one man marrying multiple women, feminists and MRAs OUGHT to be able to unite on this one and say that it's not fair to MEN. Think of all the unhappy male Muslims and certain Mormons who can't get married at all because of the woman shortage! Yes, they exist.
