Your analysis of the debate? (Transcript with some NPR annotations here.)
I had a friend in town from New York and she took me to dinner, so I saw only the very beginning -- and nothing that surprised me, starting with how Hillary called Trump "Donald."
I get why she did that, but it made her seem petty and disrespectful.
Okay, your turn...
P.S. We went to my favorite restaurant, Hal's Bar & Grill, which has (sob!) moved. If you're in Los Angeles, I highly recommend it. Don and Linda Novack, who own the place, are super-nice, as is everyone who works there, and the food is great. I got the flank steak entree with Caesar salad on the side, one of my perennial faves. And we had artichokes and smoked fish appetizers, which were fabulous.

Have not watched it yet due to time change, but aren't they friends IRL ?
Nicolek at September 26, 2016 11:56 PM
I didn't watch it because political speeches are bad for my blood pressure, and because I'm not going to vote for either one of them regardless. But I read another blog where people were posting comments while it was going on, and nearly all of them seemed to think Hillary won it. And these were hardcore Trump supporters.
Rex Little at September 27, 2016 12:03 AM
Hillary didn't collapse, Trump didn't say anything offensive. Best summary I've seen: "That's 100 minutes of my life I'd like back."
a_random_guy at September 27, 2016 2:03 AM
It didnt change any minds.
Those of us voting against Hillary because she is a sleezy power mad liar and a crook, aren't going to change our minds on that score, because of anything she says.
Those of us voting for Trump because we will literally vote for anyone to keep that bitch out of office, means that anything he says is a moot point also.
Isab at September 27, 2016 2:51 AM
What Isab said plus an amateur politician versus a professional liar gets you a boring watch.
Face it. The only reason anyone watched was to see if either exploded or had a seizure.
Bob in Texas at September 27, 2016 5:46 AM
Could you give us more details about that artichoke and smoked fish appetizer? Was it served cold? Something that could be done with frozen artichoke hearts? Or scaled down to finger food?
Ben David at September 27, 2016 6:11 AM
I heard one of the first questions, and I'm angry with Trump that he didn't reply to Lester Holt thusly:
Unprecedented job growth over the last 6 years? where?
http://data.bls.gov/timeseries/LNS11300000
If this is job growth, then our hands are too small to hold it.

One thing some might miss...
So, you think the debate might have shown a personality trait that may add or detract from either's capability to hold office.
That doesn't change the policies they promote.

Trump admitted that he stiffs contractors, confirmed that he profited off the housing collapse, and said he was smart to pay no federal income taxes, as in $0.00. I guess I'm just a stupid chump for paying taxes.
JoJo at September 27, 2016 9:20 AM
"I guess I'm just a stupid chump for paying taxes."
Not really. If you invest in real estate, because of tax laws, you get to defer some (possibly all) federal income tax for awhile.

From the debate:
“In fact, Donald was one of the people who rooted for the housing crisis,” Hillary Clinton said when discussing the recovery from the Great Recession. “He said back in 2006, ‘Gee, I hope it does collapse because then I can go in and buy some and make some money. Well it did collapse.”
“That’s called business, by the way,” Trump said, interrupting.

In this scenario, replace Clinton with Trump -- with the criticism being moving jobs to other countries -- and replace Trump with the CEO of Apple, Ford, Carrier or Kraft.
JD at September 27, 2016 10:28 AM
My thoughts on the debate
1. She made a mistake waling all the way over to him
Jobs
Clinton
2. Wage gap lie. While women earn 80% of what men do they also only work 75% of the HOURS men do. 80/75=1.067.
If you really want to end the wage gap pay men more money
3. Wealthy pay their fair share. Nice stab at class envy. How much should the “wealthy” pay?
Define wealthy.
4. Who can shoulder the responsibly? Probably not the woman who hit her head and forgot 40 years of classified document protocols.
Trump
5. Stop mentioning Mexico
6. Stop blaming other countries for the tax policies of the US
Clinton
7. How can people invest in the economy if we raise taxes on the only people with the spare capital to invest?
Trump
8. Gave into a personal attack, bad move
9. Muddled arguments on companies leaving
Clinton
10. No the recession was caused by poor lending forced on banks by democratic legislators
11. Clean energy? Like Solyndra
Both
12. Facts? From a Clinton?
13. Trade deal shouting match
14. How is it that not collecting taxes not yet collected automatically means more debt? Isnt that basically just admitting 'were gonna spend that money whether or not we collect the funds'?
Trump
15. Good point on regulations
Clinton
16. I'd no more trust Clinton staffers to tell the truth, than Fox News
Tax Cuts
17. Any one else sick of Tremendous?
18. Repeating the same thing three times doesnt make you sound any smarter dude
Clinton
19. So she feels like a republican now?
20. Maybe we stop giving morons money to waste on bullshit degrees?
Trump
21. Again with the repeating
Tax Returns
Trump
22. Given media bias I can see not releasing returns under audit. You know they will accusing him of lying when the filed taxes dont match the audited returns
23. Emails!
Clinton
24. Why hasnt she released the Clinton foundations financial given the entire thing is a family business
25. Clinton pontificating about the nefariousness of someone hiding something (delicious)
26. Made a mistake using a server? How about deliberately deleting emails.
Trump
27. Half ass meandering summaries of you financial make you look like an idiot
Clinton
28. She doenst let anyone near her, When the hell did she meet with dozens of contractors stiffed by Trump?
29. Shes so upset with Trump over the accusations of financial malfeasance against him. I can only imagine how upset she is given the claims of sexual assault against her husband, oh, wait
30. Trump bankruptcy BAD. Clinton theft of White House property IGNORE THAT
Trump
31. 'I'll give you an example' stop saying that
RACE
32. Cops are more likely to be shot by black people than vice versa. Cops are also more likely to shoot white people
Clinton
33. Race still challenge – if only liberals werent so hung up on it
34. I dont trust cops (I say this as a white person)
35. So many good brave police officers who want change(but do nothing to turn in bad cops)
36. Get guns out of bad hands? Like cops hands?
37. Young black deaths are caused by gangs fighting over drug territory in heavily gun controlled democratic stronghold cities
Trump
38. How does Clinton not roll her eyes? Practice with Hubby I'm guessing
39. Oh my god, do these assholes take a class in how to talk without saying anything?
Moderator
40. Disparate impact? Funny how that term isnt used to decry men making up a majority of all prisoners
Clinton
41. Lady who called black men “super predators” sad at guy who paints bleak picture of black communities
42. Too many minority men sent to jail – or “”brought to heel”?
43. She makes a good point about sentencing disparity. But most sentencing disparity centers around drug crimes. And all drug were outlawed for blatantly racist and sexist reasons. But then again in all her years in politics I dont recall her ever doing anything to overturn any drug laws
44. Common Sense Gun Rules!!! Scary Looking Weapons that arent any more powerful than non scary looking weapons!!! Deny rights to Americana based on unconstitutional secret government lists that its illegal to know how to get off of!!!

55. Give weapons to Arabs to fight ISIS. Cause that never ends badly
Trump
56. ISIS was created cause we left Iraq
57. How do you take the oil when its under ground
Clinton
58. Clinton admits Obama didnt do anything to bring troops home early form middle East, but its been over 8 years since he made those promises, and liberal only care about troops being abused when a republican is in power
Trump
59. I think these people define temperament differently.
Clinton
60. Iran was month from a working nuke? Did I miss that in the papers?
61. The policy of the US has not been to reduce nukes. It has been to maintain its own power
62. She cant control that smile the way she keep her eyes from rolling
63. Our word is good? Seriously? From a woman who lies out of habit?
64. A lid on Irans nukes? Where they get to conduct their own inspections to see if they are complying in a manner that we cant really check?
65. Values? She lied four times about being kinda sick when being honest from the start would have been fine
Trump
66. Cant afford to be the world cops for free
67. Again with the repeating
Clinton
68. I support democracy (but only when my party cant rig it for me like they did in the primaries)
lujlp at September 27, 2016 1:07 PM
Didn't watch but here is the plausible post debate analysis I've read.
1. Moderator appeared to be on Clinton's side. Anti-Hillary crowd gets to complain about that for a few months.
2. The Donald didn't look like he was going to start WW3 'Nuke all the trees'. (boogaloo doesn't rhyme with three, sorry) So Hillary will probably lose the election. Even Hillary treated him like a normal politician. Especially with that bit at the end. Would you accept an election that put a crazy man determined to end life as we know it in power? Hillary was claiming that is how nuts Trump is but now is willing to abide by the results? Without the Mr. Crazy Pants label Trump beats her in the polls.
So Clinton did better in the debate but Trump beat the threshold he needed to beat.
Ben at September 27, 2016 1:35 PM
In this scenario replace the US with Haiti, the housing collapse with an earthquake, the housing crisis with telephony, and Trump with the Clinton Foundation. Then, let's talk about who's been profiteering off other people's misery.
Conan the Grammarian at September 27, 2016 2:59 PM
That is the problem for Clinton. Any complaint you level at Trump applies twofold or more against her. And to top it off she isn't charismatic.
Ben at September 27, 2016 3:58 PM
It was pretty sad. The fate of the country is at stake, with the Worst Woman in the World looking good in some polls, and Trump blunders his way through the debate -- not that Holt's choice of questions was any help -- sigh.
mpetrie98 at September 27, 2016 8:21 PM
IMO the overall political momentum in the nation is in Trump's direction, and has been ever since he identified secure borders as his cornerstone issue -- for decades, it has been known that concern about borders cuts across party lines, and other political classifications.
So, unless something stunning happens during the debates to derail him, he will win in November. In the first debate, nothing did.
As a debater, Trump made rookie blunders of strategy, tactics and structure... made me want to give him and/or his prep team a boot in their casual, lazy backsides. Sheesh!
Lastango at September 27, 2016 10:38 PM
The overall political momentum is that people are finding it really difficult to vote for either eating a turd or drinking one. That's why all polls indicate it's pretty 50/50
If you boil the water beforehand does that make the turd more hygienic? Does adding spices make the turd easier to chew? These are the questions most of us are asking ourselves.
Tough choices. Fortunately I live in California so it's been decided that I am in the eat the turd camp and my wishes don't matter.
Ppen at September 27, 2016 11:04 PM
Something else worth pointing out: over the past decade or so, many Republicans and conservatives have been running strong, only to wreck their campaigns in the home stretch -- perhaps by being drawn into an unnecessary speculation, or being baited into a non-key but poisonous topic. They continually underestimate their enemies on the Left, and never seem to learn. That's how the Democrats got control of all three branches of the federal government just long enough to inflict the Obamacare fraud on the nation.
With so much at stake (i.e. multiple Supreme Court appointments, and the very identity of the American nation) it was deeply disappointing to watch Trump half-step his way through the debate.
Lastango at September 27, 2016 11:19 PM
See I thought Trump did better. Maybe because I watched it the next day and read so many comments about how great Clinton did and how badly he did, but I was surprised at how articulate he was.
Clinton was all, "i have a plan and it is better than yours"
Trump was, "i have a plan and it is to lower taxes to 15%"
While I do not agree with his plan, he articulated it well and repeated it several times. Clinton was vague.
Nicolek at September 28, 2016 1:05 AM
I thought her body double did pretty well considering.
Bob in Texas at September 28, 2016 5:47 AM
I have recently changed over into physical inpatient rehab nursing, and all I could think of as Clinton walked out was "She's having to concentrate on every single step and can barely keep her feet". She looks like a lot of our patients. Very slow, very deliberate placement. And man, when did they pump her face so full of fillers? Granted, she makes me ill so I don't watch tv when she's on, but dang. Madonna looks more natural.
I turned off the debate when she said we're going to pay fro free college, childcare, and something else, by making the rich pay their share. No matter how many times it's been proven, via actual numbers, that you could tax every millionaire in the country at 100% and not even pay off the deficit we're running.
Oh, that, and her 'Trump will add 5 trillion to the deficit" line: from the party that added 15 or so trillion. Pot, meet kettle.
momof4 at September 28, 2016 6:05 AM
MO4 I kind of think it might be low-dose steroids giving her moon facies, maybe to help her recover from the pneumonia or whatever it was she had. Yeah, she's being very deliberate. Something's up with her, I just doubt we find out what until after the election.
