Trump As Usual: What Trump Said Was Not At All Out Of Character
You were expecting Cary Grant?
I lived in New York City during the '80s and '90s, during which time Trump got a ton of media coverage -- over and over revealing him to be a flashy, nouveau-rich pig.
That said, I was working pretty intensively on my book and column on Friday and not on Twitter, and I only began paying attention to the Trump/pussy-grab brouhaha at about 8 Friday evening.
What I was most shocked by was how people are reacting -- as if they're really getting some surprising new piece of information about the guy.
Say you're from another planet. All you have to do is take a five-minute look at this guy to know what he's all about. You don't need last-minute confirmation from some long-buried tape. I knew it from reading about him in the papers when I lived in New York -- and then seeing what a corrupt, awful, and unstable person he is through his statements throughout the campaign.
In short, Donald Trump is a coarse, corrupt jerk who is horrifyingly close to being president. His behavior around women is in no way surprising or out of character.
Here's that tape:
What was going on here? He was playing alpha dog, bragging, to this young guy. It was hyperbole.
A bonding experience between certain guys is crude sex talk and maybe racism.
Robby Soave disagrees:
Some people might be tempted to write off Trump's comments to Bush as empty boasts. They would be utter fools to do so. The New York Times, in fact, has just run an interview with a woman who says she was given the Trump treatment by the reality TV star. This is not an isolated incident: there is ample evidence that Trump has physically harmed women. And he has now admitted on tape that he feels license to mistreat them.To be absolutely clear: there is nothing ambiguous about Trump's stated (and demonstrated) approach to women: it's battery, at a minimum.
I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised if these claims are true. But I still do suspect that this bus conversation was big, boasting guy talk.
And much as I despise Hillary, as I've been saying, she's at least a corrupt adult, and my vote will go to seeing that Donald Trump is not elected.
I was amused by @SShackford's "Make America Grope Again" tweet -- while, at the same time, being horrified out of my skin at the prospect.

You have to admit it would make any high-level meeting with Angela Merkel a lot more interesting.

"Aye" - Hillary, voting for the Affordable Care Act
But go ahead. What you say is obviously more important than what you do.
And if you had been within range of Bill Clinton, Hillary would enthusiastically declare him blameless and you a common whore. One of a dozen.
You're not, but that's what the litany of actual mistreatment of women, unmitigated in fact by his First Lady, says to me about your "adult".

What, the Clinton camp is going to try to nail Trump on his treatment of women. The Clintons?
This will just open the door to their past behavior: Bill as a randy goat who can't keep his pants zipped, and Hillary for her hard work to keep him from being prosecuted.
If this is their new tactic, Hillary has already lost.

I don't give a crap what he said decades ago. I care what Hillary has Done, while in government, recently. With a little power, she caused Americans to die, blamed Americans for it, sold access to the government, and mishandled classified info and perjured herself about it. What do we think she'll do with unlimited power? I'm voting against her. For the person who may actually beat her. I'm proudly deplorable.

Sorry Amy, I gotta agree with momof4. Deplorable over here too.
Missed you guys. Some shit went down. Lost my dad in July. Daughter #2 still trying to get work. So is #1 for that matter, in her field, but she still works at the magnet school in New Haven, so there's that. Oh and I'm finally gainfully employed. Buying tea from China. Not all of it, but some! Still talking to someone about things, but it's getting better. Might be able to take it down a notch or 2 in the very near future. I can see the glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel. Didn't want to come back until I knew I could hold my own, dig?
I hope everyone else is/has been well. :)

Will Hillary continue with her pay to play policy? will she continue to slag any woman who dares to accuse her husband of wrong doing? will she continue Bill's policy of selling our tech to China? will she maintain a private email server to avoid having to abide by the Freedom of Information Act?
I'm going with "yes" for all those questions. But let's concentrate on Trump's boorish behaviour. Because that's obviously much more important than what Hillary has promised to do to the Bill of Rights.
Oh, and expect her to push for single payer health care.

Agree that Trump is rather juvenile but not sure being an "adult" (shredding women's lives when they complain about your husband, perpetually lying, by your own words state that your private position is pay for play, and your petty incompetent abilities get people killed) is such a good thing.
Maybe it's time for a different amateur to be in office.

Recall the pneumonia debacle?
It is a perfect microcosm of what is wrong with Clinton. She is quite literally a pathological liar.
She knew she was sick. Rather than tell the truth which would have done her no harm, she claimed to be overcome with emotion
People pointed out she is a soulless robot who has no emotions, so she claimed heat exhaustion
People pointed out it was barely 80 degrees, so she claimed dehydration.
A few hours later she told reporters she was fine and had never felt better, then the video of her have a seizure and needing three people to stuff her into a car three feet away surfaces.
The woman cant tell the truth to save her life.

Trump used a dirty word in reference to a woman 11 years ago; in a conversation about sleeping with a married woman.
Trump called a woman fat 10 years ago; after she gained weight despite having a contract calling for her to maintain her weight in a range commonly acceptable for a beauty queen.
Trump called a woman who publicly insulted him a pig.
Trump questioned a Mexican-American judge's impartiality in light of his own criticism of illegal immigrants from Mexico.
Being offended by Trump is easy, even natural.
Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of outrage!
+++
Clinton used an easily-hacked, insecure server for top secret e-mails. 4 years ago. That's a complex technology issue that most of the electorate cannot understand (which is why spam is so successful).
Clinton insults and threatens victims of her husband's misogyny and sexual brutality.
Clinton favors the arrest of an American filmmaker in California for inspiring social unrest that occurred in Libya.
Clinton blurred the distinction between her private foundation and her public service job - outrage over this requires connecting the dots and understanding a timeline (i.e., mental arithmetic).
Yawn havoc and let slip the dogs of apathy.

Which is potentially a worse role model for our daughters, a man who reflexively insults and degrades women, or a woman who flouts the law and hides behind charges of sexism at every criticism?
Can we get a do-over on this election?

Prepare yourselves, Hillary-haters, Trump is going to lose (I've been certain of this ever since it looked like he was going to be the Republican nominee.)
My only questions are: since he seems to be fundamentally incapable of accepting losing, is he going to claim the election was rigged/stolen (quite likely) and then will some -- or perhaps many -- of his supporters go apeshit and get violent (not out of the question at all)?

Nope. I've been in plenty of locker rooms in my life, and the conversation doesn't go much beyond "She's so hot" or "You getting some strange these days?" I've never heard anyone boast of grabbing unwilling women "by the pussy."

But seriously: the ants running in every direction in this thread remind me of what I'm reading about the GOP this morning; there is absolutely no plan, no sense of what to do, and the more the wagons are circled the more ludicrous it appears. The smarter folks don't want to defend, both for moral reasons and practical ones: what if this was just a warning shot of tapes to come?

Like Kevin, I've never been involved in locker room discussion that devolved into such a graphic and demeaning depictions of women and an outright advocation of sexual assault - at least not after the age of 12.
Trump's going to have to humble himself and apologize profusely for this gaffe. Even though Hillary's transgressions are professionally and ethically worse than his, his violate the political correctness that is the order of the day and will harm him more with the public than hers will harm her. JD at October 8, 2016 1:06 PM
It was. There will be more. And they'll be worse.
Hillary and Co. have been harping on his choice of words and derogatory remarks for a reason. They knew these tapes were out there and were holding on to them until their release would do the most damage.
I wonder if the talk itself and Trump's view that this was just normal locker room talk is based on something about his past. He was in a male-only military school as a teenager. Perhaps he matured late and his sexual experiences started later than his classmates' experiences (or at least they ones they made up and bragged about) - hence his insistence to all that he's now a major player and his seeming desperation to maintain that façade; along with his immature fascination with women's looks.
Just some armchair psychoanalysis.
Conan the Grammarian at October 8, 2016 1:09 PM
Dave B -- I'll bow to your knowledge of men's behavior in locker rooms; my time there was spent showering and getting out on the field.

The pearl clutching is indeed getting ridiculous. This is Trump. We all know this is who he is by now. Further revelations of his boorishness aren't going to change someone's mind now.
This is who he's aways been. And if Bill Clinton can fool around with an underage intern in the Oval Office and no one bats an eye, with Democrats arguing that his sex life is personal has nothing to do with running the country, then Trump's private conversations are also personal and have nothing to do with his ability to be president.
Besides, I'll bet if Hillary and Co. been a fly on the wall for locker room conversations of FDR or Lyndon Johnson they'd have passed out with the vapors.

"Isnt Clinton as much a misadrist as Trump is a misogynist?"
I disagree Lujlp. For one thing Trump isn't a misogynist. He is a vulgarian. He says the same things about men. So I've got the same reaction as a lot of you. A big all meh. Trump has bragged about his genitals in national debates. How is this much different?
Now as for Hillary being a misandrist, once again nope. She views all people that way. After all, any woman who doesn't vote for Hillary is going to a hell she doesn't believe in, right?
Ben at October 9, 2016 7:00 AM
Protestation of Trump's comments and actions coming from the very party and people who defended Bill Clinton and to this day insist he was impeached for having sex with an underaged intern (not, as is the case, lying to a grand jury) is the height of hypocrisy.
Not that Trump's defenders have any reason to hold themselves in high esteem. As Ben points out, the man is a vulgarian. His actions toward women border on the criminal. His actions toward his business partners and subcontractors border on the fraudulent. He's ruined more (and bigger) ventures than he's saved - he saved a Brooklyn skating rink, but ruined the USFL. His non-real-estate business ventures are hardly paragons of success (Trump Air, Trump wine) and his real estate ventures are a wash (Atlantic City failures vs. Trump Tower success).
Neither candidate is a shining exemplar of human worth. Both claim as their main charitable givings their own charitable(?) foundations.
Trump used his foundation to buy influence while Hillary used hers to sell influence. Trump cheated his business partner while Hillary cheated the US taxpayers (and the Haitians).
Trump lost $1 billion of his own money in a casino venture while Hillary presided over a State Department that lost $6 billion of taxpayer money.
Decent people in this election are going to hold their noses and vote for the party with which they are in sync, praying for the party stalwarts to keep the winning candidate in check. With Trump, that might work, as most of the party stalwarts have expressed disdain for Trump. With Hillary, it will not. The blank check they will give her will unleash the worst of the Democratic Party as funded by George Soros.
Trump may have bet on a housing collapse, but Soros engineered a currency collapse. This is your modern day Democratic Party's biggest benefactor and electing Hillary will put him in the driver's seat of the US economy.
There's really not much of a alternative in this election. Jill Stein and Gary Johnson are in way over their heads. Neither has a clue what's really going on in the world. They're boutique candidates whose appeal is limited to certain special interests and fantasists.
The country will survive either. It survived Warren G. Harding and Rutherford B. Hayes. It survived the corruption of the Grant administration. However, it may be irreparably harmed by the degradation this election will leave as its long-term legacy, whoever wins.
Idiocracy is looking more and more like a documentary. What begins as satire....

[edited] While other unfaithful presidents were satisfied with little affairs here and there, Johnson’s bevy of babes was referred to by his male aides as a harem (he was said to be jealous of Kennedy’s womanizing ways and wanted to top him). Johnson would make passes at secretaries, and it was known that any who accepted would be promoted to private secretary, two words that in this context should probably have air quotes around them anytime they are uttered. By the time he was done, virtually all of his secretaries, plus his two mistresses, got the Johnson Treatment.
As for waving around his cock (a little extension of him that he had affectionately nicknamed “Jumbo”), he was said to piss in public whenever he felt like it, and if anyone dared confront him, he would whip his dick around and challenge the poor sap with, “Have you seen anything bigger than this?”…

That's some great pearl clutching Kevin. Your clutching those pearls by the pussy.
No pearl clutcher I! Too busy doubled over from laughing.
This whole thing is turning out to be a non-issue for a lot of Trump supporters.
Of course it is! But the election doesn't hinge on decided voters — it hinges on those whom Donald Trump might be able to grab by the voting pussy.

"We should accept this criticism of Trump, as soon as the Dems purge President Lyndon Johnson from their pantheon of heroes. And, purge John Kennedy."
Hell Andrew, we should accept it when they purge the Clintons. As Conan detailed this isn't something Hillary can complain about given her past actions.

After following the links in Robby Soave's article (excerpted in this post), I have sadly come to the conclusion that neither major candidate is fit to be President. Furthermore, their unstable temperaments (yes, the both of them) are concerning, considering the tensions between US and Russia in Syria, which could eventually become a war that could go nuclear. And I'm not sure which of the eeeeevil 3rd-party candidates (Johnson or Castle) I'll vote for. Stein's out, of course; she'd be Bernie Sanders on steroids.
Down with everything!

I saw this somewhere: "If American women are so offended by Donald Trump's naughty words, then who in the hell bought more than 100 million copies of 50 Shades of Grey?"
Ken R at October 9, 2016 11:48 AM
Nonsense comparison. People weren't offended by standalone words like "pussy." It was the context in which the words were used.
50 Shades is fictional erotica (let's call it that for now), and as far as I know, no character in those books grabs a strange woman by the crotch without precedent. If there is such a character, either 1) he'd be an unsympathetic character or 2) it would be in the context of BDSM/nc erotica, which is not real life and doesn't affect real people. It's understood by the reader to be a fantasy. People indulge in fantasies of things that they would never want in reality, but the fiction safely controls the circumstances.
You think everyone who enjoyed "Gone Girl" is a hypocrite if they're not fine with murder?
Insufficient Poison at October 9, 2016 12:08 PM
The "50 Shades of Gray" comment was made by Joe Walsh (the former Congressman and child-support dodger, not the musician), operating at the very top of his intellectual ability.

...fictional... not real life... doesn't affect real people... understood by the reader to be fantasy... people indulge in fantasies of things that they would never want in reality...
I think that's the way a lot of people are understanding Trump's vulgar words.

Or we could just take him at his word that he really, really enjoys grabbing strange women by the pussy.

Yea, Ken R. "fiction" is what it is and, also, what Hillary used to get a child rapist off.
Hillary used such "fiction" to trash the reputation of a 14-year old rape victim. Hillary bragged about getting the child rapist off by presenting the 14-year old as having fantasies of being with an older man.
I doubt rape was what the 14-year old had in mind. But, Hillary went there anyway.
Nothing, NOTHING, Trump has said (especially 11 years ago) compares to Hillary's actions; especially laughing about the rape of a 14-year old. An 14-year old who was so badly injured that she needed surgery and was told by the doctors she would most likely never be able to have children (and she hasn't).
Yep, it is fiction - and that is what Hillary uses all the time with her lies.

You'll hear worse than what Trump said in many rap lyrics. Jay-Z's "Big PImpin'" features such misongynistic gems as:
And yes, rappers are not running for president, but they do exert a great deal of influence on the culture, more so than president does, truth be told, and no one on Hillary's team is up in arms about rap lyrics. It's the 11-year-old conversation involving Trump that we have to be outraged by.

Donald Trump says he likes to grab women by the pussy because rappers.
Or something.
(Don't look at me; I listen to Burt Bacharach and Sergio Mendes.)
