Which Quasi-Comatose Stupids Voted These Jerks In? Some CA Cities Consider A Video Streaming Tax
From NewsMax:
Dozens of California cities, hoping to bolster revenue, are considering a controversial tax on video streaming services like Netflix, the New York Times reported.Pasadena - the first to announce it wanted the so-called Netflix tax - would treat those services like a traditional utility, and tax it at 9.4 percent, the Times reported.
Though no California city has yet to begin collecting the tax, about 40 have sought advice on how it would work - with public officials arguing it is unfair people who get video through cable television are taxed, while those who have shifted over to internet streaming services are not, the Times reported.
The tax is facing stiff resistance.
Sadly, voters do not connect their spendthrift lawmakers or the numerous measures they vote in with costing actual money and needing to be paid for.
And a question -- that surely has to be a little crazy...huh? Could lobbyists from traditional cable companies have anything to do with this?

Does California have taxes on Internet service?

I guess next up they'll impose a tax on anyone using a VPN service to bypass the Netflix tax?

I think the tax would be based on the billing address of Netflix customers IRA. So a VPN wouldn't help. An out of state billing address might.

I use music-streaming services at home and in my car. Would those be taxed too? The only difference is that Netflix et al. also transmits images; Internet radio, at most, transmits still photos of album covers.

Nobody likes paying taxes, and to be against this as simply saying no to tax increases is fine, and I don't know how 9.4% compares to other sales tax rates, but is there anything about this that is worse than any other sales tax? You pay a tax on cable, or if you buy a dvd at a store, if you're going to have sales tax on entertainment shouldn't it be spread around evenly?
