Kind Of Like Burning Down Your Own House As A Protest Against The Neighbors
I'm at SPSP, the big social psych conference, so I'm not seeing much of the inauguration footage or news. I did do a little reading while eating lunch. A tweet (scroll down for the photo that accompanied it -- within my retweet/tweeted comment):
@MateaGold
Protesters now dragging park benches over to makeshift bonfire in the middle of K Street.
Sorry, not understanding how destroying parts of Washington, D.C. that make it more accessible/comfortable for ordinary people is helpful. https://t.co/lsEwkuOIxj

As I tweeted to somebody else:
@amyalkon
@whalesteaks No Trump fan, either, but I am a big bench fan -- personally & on behalf of old, tired people who want to sit their ass down

"About 500 people, some wearing masks, marched through the city's downtown, using hammers to claw up chunks of pavement to smash the windows of a Bank of America branch and a McDonald's outlet, all symbols of the American capitalist system."
"Not far from the White House, protesters scuffled with police, at one point throwing aluminum chairs at an outdoor café. Bob Hrifko, a member of the Bikers for Trump group in town to celebrate the inauguration, was struck in the face when he tried to intervene."

If only they'd used that energy for voting instead of rioting.

This is why Trump was elected.

They don't live there. Why should they care if the place is trashed and torched?
Wfjag at January 20, 2017 1:17 PM
Amy, please stop referring to these animals as protesters.
They are rioters!
Jay at January 20, 2017 1:30 PM
I think the benches are safe, they're now torching cars.
Conan the Grammarian at January 20, 2017 1:39 PM
It's important to know that the majority of the protesters are peaceful. The people torching the cars are Black Bloc Anarchists. They're responsible for most of the violence.
They do this professionally.

I wonder who's footing the bill. Also, torching things? will someone think of climate change?
Again, don't lecture me about my carbon footprint whilst you're doing or turning a blind eye at this.

I found it rather disgusting that protesters were blocking the entrances so that people who wanted to attend the inauguration were blocked.
You cannot block someone's right to peaceable assembly. Where the hell was the fire department with the hoses?
And yes, I am dead serious. I have no problem whatsoever with the authorities using excessive force when it comes to protecting the rights of others.
Patrick at January 20, 2017 2:45 PM
Seems...oddly appropriate. Wonder if it was for someone at the Post?

I thought I saw reports that protestors chained themselves together. I wouldn't have a problem with hitting the chain with a taser.
Add water? ooooo...that's gonna hurt.

We only use the broad brush on right-wing protesters.

Most of us with a job can't take the time to peacefully block access to public gatherings
causticf at January 20, 2017 5:14 PM
I think it is very very strange how easily they protest "capitalism" and "the system", as if they have an alternative. They want to tear it down...and then what? Yes, yes, it is so terribly unfair that people have to work and money just doesn't come down from the sky. If these people got enough support they would seriously destroy everything. Protesters, hah.

I was there, trying to get in, and didn't. What about MY rights!?
You are too kind, Patrick, the heck with the fire hoses - get out the guns and shoot them.
