As much as Amy talks about (un-degree'd) science, I'm sincerely impressed by her resistance to yesterday's silliness.
If everyone marching yesterday had instead spent a quiet hour reading some science, or some history of science, or some challenging nonfiction of almost any kind, they'd have made a much greater impact on the flow of world events.
And actually...

And it's actually worse than that. See Munger. All these children and young people yammering against free speech and blubbering about science in such a naive fashion are training their brains to waste decades on dead ends.
[T]his is a superpower in error-causing psychological tendency: bias from consistency and commitment tendency, including the tendency to avoid or promptly resolve cognitive dissonance.

And of course, if you make a public disclosure of your conclusion, you're pounding it into your own head. Many of these students that are screaming at us, you know, they aren't convincing us, but they're forming mental change for themselves, because what they're shouting out is what they're pounding in. And I think educational institutions that create a climate where too much of that goes on are in a fundamental sense, irresponsible institutions. It's very important to not put your brain in chains too young by what you shout out.
Reflect for a moment on all the stupidity and personal hurtfulness the Baby Boomers wrought in their own lives, the lives of their children, and the lives of distant others with their smug prattle about free love and 'the corporations, man...!'
Are we going to do any better for our patience with the Occupy Wall Street, or with the noxious weasels of Missouri State and Middlebury?

I wouldn't call it patience Crid. They won. There aren't enough of us to fight back. Much less enough of us willing to fight back. So the neo-marxist zombies won. Their desire to lead us back into a society of violent tribalism and scarcity is happening. The only thing the productive can figure out to do is disassociate. Isolate the zombies and let them feed on each other.

The people marching yesterday do not believe in science, they believe in magic and dogma. Their belief in science is about as nuanced as the creationists' belief in an ancient god, and about as backward. They don't follow the rules, they make them; modern-day evangelists, whose prayers are not supplications to a powerful god, but orders to a servant to wreak vengeance upon personal enemies.
They believe in the science of Scorpion and The Big Bang Theory, fabulously easy technical feats performed by lovable, harmless nerds with heartwarming stories and compliant personalities. Just point your laptop at the problem and yell "Science!" while pounding on the keyboard furiously.
Their hero is Bill Nye, the self-proclaimed "science guy" who "saves the world." Nye, a mechanical engineering graduate (BS) who once took an astronomy class taught by Carl Sagan, fits their needs perfectly: a geeky and telegenic milquetoast with who sounds science-y but has no actual science credentials to lead him astray from the prescribed dogma.
While Nye's interest in science education is real (and laudable), he has no recent science or engineering credentials with which to make a living if being entertainer fails him. He's been an entertainer since the late '70s early '80s (a lifetime away from engineering or science).
And what a living it's been. He's worth millions today, millions reaped from his science education and entertainment enterprises. Like Al Gore, he needs to be recognized by the global warming alarmist crowd as a fellow traveler to keep the gravy train rolling.
Based on the animal waste and the diseases that have been eliminated by the internal-combustion engine, plus the additional forestland it has made possible, environmentalists should be celebrating motorized vehicles on Earth Day.
That's what I'm thinking, but for it to register as a product recall that would mean a lot of errant golfers or lots of potato patches next to golf courses. Kinda weird either way.
They seized a Kimberly-Clark paper factory last year. So toilet paper can be free, I guess. They've also seized Exxon-Mobil assets; and just last week they took the GM plant. They haven't called Bernie as an advisor but I'm sure he'd love to pitch in and help.

The suit sought $1.69 billion. A jury awarded $3.76.
What's weird is that I remember that news story... And for 20+(?) years have assumed it was a cautionary tale for attorneys in civil suits, warning that one must insist upon clear jury instruction.
But I had forgotten that it was Trump's humiliation as an outcome.

True. But, if nothing else, this chart from LLNL (the gray is wasted energy) should tell us there are improvements to be made. Fortunately, they are, by engineers seeking lower costs through better efficiency.
Little girls play with this on sidewalks.
