UN Puts Saudi Arabia On Commission For "Gender Equality"/Female Empowerment Commission
What's next, making Anthony Weiner the honorary chairman? (And while we're at it, quel dommage that Hugo Chavez is too dead to be available to run the Ludwig von Mises Institute.)
Ian Miles Cheong reports at Heat Street:
The UN press release states that the Commission on the Status of Women was elected by secret ballot with 54 voting members. Other countries with seats on the council include Algeria, Comoros, Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Iraq, Haiti, and Turkmenistan."Electing Saudi Arabia to protect women's rights is like making an arsonist into the town fire chief," declared UN Watch executive director Hillel Neuer on Twitter. "It's absurd."
"Every Saudi woman must have a male guardian who makes all critical decisions on her behalf, controlling a woman's life from birth until death," he continued. "Saudi Arabia also bans women from driving cars."
To be a woman in Saudi Arabia is to have about the same rights as a pet.

The ballot is secret but at least 5 EU countries would have had to vote for Saudi Arabia:

Amy, Amy, Amy. You just don't understand how the UN works. Just consider their Human Rights Council. It includes Rwanda, Congo, and Saudi Arabia among others. So just like how feminists insist you can't express a view point about vaginas unless you have one the UN prefers you not discuss horrible human rights issues unless you have horrible human rights problems. Or be on the women's rights council unless you have horrible issues with women's right.
Cultural imperialism, some junk about how we are all horrible, blah, blah, blah.

So the first report will castise Israel and all will agree w/BDS on how horrible things are.
LUNCH?

That's some next level Andy Kaufman performance art comedy trolling.

I hope you're not surprised by this, Amy. Just another reason to get the US out of the UN and the UN out of the US.

The UN is a contradiction. Its biggest strength is also its biggest weakness.
The UN brings all nations together in a forum in which nations can discuss disagreements and issues between them. It enables a forum which can, but does not always, avoid an outright conflict. It gives smaller nations a forum in which to condemn encroachments by larger nations, in which to reach out for support from other nations.
However, in order to provide this forum, the UN must operate under the assumption that the government of each nation is the legitimate government of that nation; that each government expresses the will of its governed.
This dichotomy means that UN committees on human rights are often composed of some of the most egregious human rights violators on the planet. The solution may be to eliminate the committees and let the UN stick to its original mission of providing a forum for international discussion.

" The solution may be to eliminate the committees and let the UN stick to its original mission of providing a forum for international discussion."
That's a chunk of change for a large number of nations/people. Fat chance.
