Plenty of holes in that story too - but at least one girl made many positive improvements under the care of the missionary and his wife before she died at 17 - of TB.
Also, there are 17 cases in "The Book of Lists" (vol. 2), pages 491-494. Six of them come from between 1930 and 1975. They came from El Salvador, India, Syria, the Sahara, and Burundi. (The link above has more recent cases.)
