I don't get why it's necessary to point out he was a 'white man'. Why must everything be laced with anti-white commentary these days.

They HAVE stopped refusing help, luj. More than 10 years ago, I'd say.

I can't open the link (I read the hard copy), but I don't remember anyone saying that only women get attacked by haters - or that minority men don't need a stranger to intervene too.

It has little to do with the idea that women don't want or deserve help. I.e., you can't blame strangers for being scared to intervene in the "old fashioned" way, even BEFORE the killings in Portland. (Same goes for why even adult victims - never mind teens or kids - in tight spaces often freeze up instead of screaming or fighting back the first time they're attacked physically or verbally by a stranger - they can't be sure they won't get killed.) So it helps society a great deal when we learn how to intervene and defuse wrath in an INDIRECT way.
