"Here's Where The Slither Meets The Slime"
A tale of a movie mafioso, golden eggs, and all who were complicit -- by one who admits to being complicit, screenwriter Scott Rosenberg, writing on his Facebook page:
If Harvey's behavior is the most reprehensible thing one can imagine, a not-so-distant second is the current flood of sanctimonious denial and condemnation that now crashes upon these shores of rectitude in gloppy tides of bullshit righteousness.Because everybody-fucking-knew.
And do you know how I am sure this is true?
Because I was there.
And I saw you.
And I talked about it with you.
You, the big producers; you, the big directors; you, the big agents; you, the big financiers.
And you, the big rival studio chiefs; you, the big actors; you, the big actresses; you, the big models.
You, the big journalists; you, the big screenwriters; you, the big rock stars; you, the big restaurateurs; you, the big politicians.I saw you.
All of you.
God help me, I was there with you.Again, maybe we didn't know the degree.
The magnitude of the awfulness.
Not the rapes.
Not the shoving against the wall.
Not the potted-plant fucking.
But we knew something.
We knew something was bubbling under.
Something odious.
Something rotten....A few actress friends of mine told me stories: of a ghastly hotel meeting; of a repugnant bathrobe-shucking; of a loathsome massage request.
And although they were rattled, they sort of laughed at his arrogance; how he had the temerity to think that simply the sight of his naked, doughy, carbuncled flesh was going to get them in the mood.
So I just believed it to be a grotesque display of power; a dude misreading the room and making a lame-if-vile pass.It was much easier to believe that.
It was much easier for ALL of us to believe that.Because...
And here's where the slither meets the slime:
Harvey was showing us the best of times.
He was making our movies.
Throwing the biggest parties.
Taking us to The Golden Globes!
Introducing us to the most amazing people (Meetings with Vice President Gore! Clubbing with Quentin and Uma! Drinks with Salman Rushdie and Ralph Fiennes! Dinners with Mick Jagger and Warren-freaking-Beatty!).The most epic Oscar weekends.
That seemed to last for weeks!
Sundance! Cannes! Toronto!
Telluride! Berlin! Venice!
Private jets! Stretch limousines! Springsteen shows!
Hell, Harvey once took me to St. Barth's for Christmas.
For 12 days!
I was a broke-ass kid from Boston who had never even HEARD of St. Barth's before he booked my travel....So, yeah, I am sorry.
Sorry and ashamed.
Because, in the end, I was complicit.
I didn't say shit.
I didn't do shit.
Harvey was nothing but wonderful to me.
So I reaped the rewards and I kept my mouth shut.
And for that, once again, I am sorry.

(Sorry now for the Rosenberg link in the earlier blog post.)
It's interesting that Rosenberg does prose pagination like lines in a script. Maybe once you've had a successful film shot from your pages, you feel like you can type it out anyway you want... His style certainly didn't interfere with his meaning here.
A couple more Weinstein thoughts:
1. Nothing about this story has changed my mind about anything. So there's about a 30 or 35% chance that I'm a middle-aged dinosaur, too deaf in hearing aids and too blind in reading glasses to detect the splooshing effects of a comet hitting the Gulf of Mexico. But there's a 60 or 65% percent chance that there's no reason my opinion should be moved, having never harassed anyone or had personal knowledge of exploitation of others.
2. It's hard to see whether this is some kind of breakthrough moment in Hollywood or anywhere else. For all the noise from Anita Hill's appearance at the Clarence Thomas hearings, there never seemed to have been appreciable changes to anyone's behavior... Certainly no woman of my age --with work experience teetering nicely in decades theretofore & thereafter-- has spoken of an improved atmosphere.
(BTW, if you remember the name John Doggett, Amy will send you out a Goddess Blog windbreaker.)
It's also noteworthy that two recent presidents, one from each party, have reputations for sexual misconduct. (This made Chelsea's weekend evasion of press inquiry about Weinstein that much more odious. To maintain the balance of repugnance, Donny Junior offered a comment yesterday.)

Now, this is the kind of statement one should give in this situation, acknowledging one's own complicity and silence; although he does hide behind denial of any real abuses (i,e., rapes), "I didn't know."
All the people who happily reaped the rewards of proximity to Weinstein while keeping quiet about his abuses of power and now deny any closeness to him are as hypocritical as Harvey himself was; with his public donations to charity and sanctimonious promotion of liberal causes, while being a monster behind the scenes.
A sad and revealing commentary on the power Hollywood wields; power we've given it. We've given the court jesters the reins of power without any accountability. And we act shocked when their abuses of that power are revealed.
This.

Hmm, I'd like one myself.

This is NOT meant salaciously: Post your size, we'll see what we can do.
Better yet, post Gregg's size, because it would be fun to see him in a chartreuse & pink vinyl number, with a little Eiffel Tower stitch under the left collarbone.
Does anyone remember the texture of the circa-1970 synthetic-fabric jacket? It was evil. And it lasted forever.

Big Hollywood Producer: "I am shocked, shocked to find sexual harassment and female objectification going on here!"
Toadie Assistant: "Mr. Producer, your next audition is here."
BHP: "Oh, thank you very much. Shocked, I say! This is an outrage!"
NO ONE knew?!? Rrriiiiiiight..

These people can't even say they didn't know.

So IRA, we can presume from this that Weinstein's worst sin was not moving to Europe sooner. I guess.
The real problem, as Rosenberg touches on, is that for every person who attempted to push back against Weinstein's abuse, there are two people who did his bidding willingly in order to accrue the career advantages thereof. Actresses (and maybe a few actors?) who willingly slept with him (while thinking of England, presumably), in order to get the juicy role that led to the Oscar nomination. Staffers who agreed to do "acquisition" for him, in exchange for the penthouse office overlooking the plaza in Rome.
There's a lot of variations on the fable of the "red button". The one which, if you push it, you become instantly famous and wealthy. Pushing it will also cause someone to die, but don't worry; it will be someone you don't know. Of course, that's always the catch. How well do you really know your spouse? Your children? Your closest friends? Yourself? It sounds like a lot of people in Hollywood are suddenly discovering that they don't know themselves all that well.

Speaking of Europe, has anyone authority seized or invalidated Hurricane Harvey's passport?

"Because everybody-fucking-knew."
I have a hard time believing his wife didn't know, and a hard time feeling bad about people boycotting her business.

> I have a hard time believing
> his wife didn't know
You might have recognized some of the wording in their wedding vows, but I'd bet the parameters of their Union we're like nothing you've ever seen in your Social Circles.
And let's just point out that this cell phone transcription does some weird capitalization on the words you speak into it.
It's hard to believe that a woman could even schedule a wedding at which Harvey Weinstein would appear --let alone participate-- without having received a lot of very cynical advice from social and legal authorities in their shared peer group.
For a decent person such as yourself, the word "knew" conveys all sorts of sophistication and wine-soaked dealmaking with the Devil in candlelight. "Well, as long as he's good to the kids..."
Yet the friends of a Bride of the Weinsteins, if approached for support during emotional crisis following a betrayal in the marriage, wouldn't even muster the breath to say "Duh, Honey."
This wasn't Donny Osmond in bad aftershave.

You'll *nevar* guess what I just found on the computer computer internet just now:
Such marriages succeed my experience of the world.
Crid at October 17, 2017 3:13 PM
That was supposed to be "exceed," but again, this is a voice transcription through the cell phone. I blame some Korean engineer somewhere.
And there was only supposed to be one "computer," though I actually own four of those little suckers.

How do you have two children in a "sexless business arrangement?"
It sounds like someone is trying to separate her from him, to minimize the damage to her brand.
Conan the Grammarian at October 17, 2017 3:31 PM
Lets assume it was sexless, how does that HELP her?
If anything it makes her actions, at lease seem, worse
lujlp at October 17, 2017 4:28 PM
Conan - turkey baster, IVF, or a lawyerly definition of sexless (ask President Clinton what the parameters are on that one).
The accusation that she entered into a sexless marriage with a known sexual predator, helping him look good in exchange for promoting her business, does not actually clear her name.
I do hope someone points that out to the people who think that choice speaks well of someone's character. Someone please turn off the gas lights on the way out.
Michelle at October 17, 2017 4:31 PM
Lujlp - exactly.
