How can I encourage my 4-year-old to play more independently? All he wants to do is reenact imaginary stories (mostly the same few), and it requires my spouse and I to play specific roles and say specific things. He sees toys only as props for these games. He is in school all day, so I do want to play with him in the evenings, as it’s our only time. But it’s exhausting and, frankly, boring.
Do today's parents actually have to write to a newspaper columnist to whine that they don't know how to say 'no'?

Another big weekend in Hollywood, as Warners is broadly afflicted during a transition to ownership by another famous communications firm.
I'm still unconvinced that this has much to do with sexual harassment in our larger culture. Here's a secret about Hollywood stardom: One hot blonde (or redhead, or negress, or fat guy) is as good as another. The most successful names can give you a good opening weekend. But as they fade or retreat from their careers, there's always another one ready to take the job and do just as well. Hollywood has never lost meaningful money because one particular actor retired (or merely left to hike through the mountains in a butthurt snit). The things we call "talent" in acting are illusory: People respond to cheekbones and complexion. These beauties, even if horribly exploited, churned through the machine and its enormous personal rewards, unremarkably... Were any of the names we've heard cosmically destined to have had even longer careers, or be better known to us than they already are?
In such an industry, it will of course be relationships with producers that make things happen, and we shouldn't be too surprised that the powerful will take advantage.
But that's hard to do when one's hiring for genuine skills, even if hiring fertile young women. STEM workers, coders, designers and attorneys will be less bothered by these assholes in some proportion, even though never free of them entirely: They can always get their rewards from a competitive, and less intrusive, employer.
If sex scandals accelerate the decline of showbiz in Los Angeles, it's no skin off my nose... I've had my fun and made my (technician's) money, and never been abused or abused anyone else.
But I doubt this wave will wash through too many other fields of American endeavor.

"Spacey is in for some spectacularly bad times."
Sex is more important than murder in the USA, no matter what we call a burqa.
So this will last longer than 9/11, even in the hypocracy (intentional; refers to action of film industry commanders) of Hollywood.
Did you see Spacey's "American Beauty"? The indictment of American suburbia as the seat of repressed Nazi eroto/genophobia and pedophilia even inspired a producer to speculate at the Oscar broadcast mic how wonderful it might be to er, observe, that underage girl so closely (Thora Birch)...
But I am not surprised.
I know what Amy has carefully researched for many years: desire is amplified by markers specific to gender. What is there left to do after a success that brings you fame and fortune but enjoy the things they bring you?
Men and women will go fishing with that bait to see what it brings them, and it is nearly criminally naîve to pretend this is either new or otherwise.
If Kevin Spacey has the wit to point out something so simple as "women go to bars for the very same reason men do", he may change the conversation enough to survive.

Teaching? That's against the teacher's union guidelines. A teacher's job is not to teach, but to recite the contents of the textbooks and grade the students ability to memorize the answers:
So...Dreyfuss the Elder was in the same room as Spacey, got felt up by Spacey, and watched Spacey do the same to the Dreyfuss the Younger and Spacey wasn't picking his teeth up off the floor?
Methinks Mrs. Dreyfuss wears the pants in that household.

I would be angry too if he said he owns an Italian car and it turned out to be something like that lil' thing.
Teaching? That's against the teacher's union guidelines.
That's like 5th or 6th on the list of a teacher's union objectives. If you want to get the students attention, remind them that no socialist or communist society ever produced an iPhone.
Made them with slave like labor? oh yes. Actually produced one from start to production? hell no.

What's the difference between Chile and Saudi Arabia?
“There is this small group of people who are not equally subject to the laws as the rest of us, and that’s on purpose,” Harrington said. These people “live the dream” of enjoying “the benefits of society without being subject to any of its constraints.”

Okay, school me on method-or-whatever acting. "The Bride" in Kill Bill gets used by Bill, raped, repeatedly by inference, as a comatose hospital patient on whom an abortion was performed late in the term; when she wakes, she bit her assailant to kill him...
Is seeing Harvey naked worse than that?
Oh, you might say, that was her job, not personal.
So here -- about costar Carradine: "He was sometimes arrested and prosecuted for a variety of offenses, which often involved substance abuse. On June 3, 2009, he was found dead in a closet in his hotel room in Bangkok, Thailand due to an autoerotic asphyxiation gone fatal."
Is there a clue here somewhere? What can they say that we haven't shown on the screen as entertainment already?

"Did Donna Brazile throw Hillary under the bus in revenge for being called a ‘brain dead buffalo?’"
My long-time observation of Donna Brazile is that although she professes to be a true-blue ideologue, she's actually fairly mercenary. So my theory is: She threw Hillary under the bus because Hillary stiffed her on something.
