It's a lovely day for a set of balls. If you don't have your own, consider growing a pair. My brand new book, Unf*ckology: A Field Guide to Living with Guts and Confidence, will help.

Gosh 'n golly, Amy, maybe balls aren't necessary: There are a lot of people around here who think the richest expression of American character is maximal infantilism.

This is not something that I would insist happen to Newman: It would be coarsely punitive and distasteful.
But if it did/does, I'd probably say she deserves it.
Her thinking is simplistic and intemperate. It'd be nice if the many millions who share her patterns were corrected by an impulsive, nearly impersonal snapback of horse sense.
After all, she works for the government: The British people are *paying* this woman to be small-minded.
Crid at January 29, 2018 5:12 AM
It's true: Read the comments to any recent Newman tweet. This may be like Hugh Grant & the prostitute, or Bob Knight & the chair, or Lewinski & the cigar... Newman indeed may never live this down, never walk into a cocktail party without being mocked in the manner of her own behavior.
The #SoYoureSaying hashtag has some video cutdowns which amuse.

Her interviewing style was not one of inquiry, but of bias confirmation. She was not asking Peterson to present his opinion, but using his comments as an opportunity to put forth her own.
And it's becoming more common, not less. The US networks do not effectively separate news and opinion, in the past putting their opinion people on what was supposed to be politically-neutral election coverage and it backfired. Remember Chris Matthews' tingle or Candy Crowley's debate assist?
I wouldn't hold my breath awaiting that snapback of horse sense. While we've seen the aforementioned receive some flack for their intemperate remarks and overt display of bias, most of the flack has been from the "other" side, their own side celebrating the penetrating inquisition to which the opposing side was subjected.
The description I gave of "sides" indicates the problem. Fox News and talk radio arose out of a feeling by the right that its views were being given short shrift by the prevailing networks and news organs. In response, the established news organs drifted leftward. So, like the turn of the 20th century, we now have house news organs, yellow journalism, with each side's mouthpieces seeking ever more sensational dirt on the other side as "news."
It would take public rebuke and accusations of inciting a presidential assassination to calm the war of sensationalism between Hearst and Pulitzer. Let's hope this go-round doesn't lead to that.

And the British should be ever so thankful they're not getting all of the government they're paying for.

Coast Guardsman imprisoned, busted and dishonorably discharged on what appears to be a provably false accusation. Turns out that commanders, determined to get a politically expedient conviction by any means necessary, tampered with the jury, as well as exerting command influence on the court itself. Six years later, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces finally overturns the conviction and dismisses the charges with prejudice.

I, Tonya was pretty good or at least entertaining in a cynical way to me. It borrows technique from Rashomon of having dueling narratives of an incident that are all self serving and clearly coming from unreliable storytellers. It’s their individual versions of the events, and there is no omniscient point of view given so the audience can know the “real truth”. What makes it fun is how every character basically insists the other ones aren’t telling the truth. Makes for perfect gossipy trash movie, and still has a couple of moments of celebrating a real athletic triumph.
But it’s still trashy. I liked it.
