Now, more specifically, if you do buy the white, male privilege cant, here’s a question: What one white male best illustrates the concept, more thoroughly than anyone else ever could, in the whole of the country?
Well, her boss, the prime minister.
He has a patrician name, an inherited status, is the offspring of a prime minister, has family friendships that give access to the world’s great and glorious, from the Khans to the Castros, a trust-fund income, and a network of political connections unexampled in modern Canadian politics. On the white male privilege scale he’s the very distillation and essence, the Platonic ideal.
This is what eventually happens when you brand your political opponents as not just wrong, but also evil and malicious in their agenda. Keep that in mind the next time you hear someone say "by any means necessary".

Arnold Schwartzenbicep has big plans.
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s next mission: taking oil companies to court “for knowingly killing people all over the world.”
The former California governor and global environmental activist announced the move Sunday at a live recording of POLITICO’s Off Message podcast here at the SXSW festival, revealing that he’s in talks with several private law firms and preparing a public push around the effort.
Former GOP California governor and global warming activist Arnold Schwarzenegger came under fire for his near-daily private jet commute from his Brentwood home to the governor’s mansion in Sacramento. “The governor’s Gulf-stream jet does nearly as much damage to the environment in one hour as a small car does in a year,” the Los Angeles Times reported in 2008. But not to worry, because “Schwarzenegger is well aware of this and makes amends by purchasing pollution credits for the carbon dioxide his jet releases.”
I'm under the impression that he's flown to the Cannes' Film Festival a few time via private aircraft. So, Arny, how many people died for your flights? tick-tock

I'm not sure it is a conflict, per se, but I can see where such conflicts could crop up. Lead us not into temptation. Some will not be able to help themselves except to help themselves.
Executives at some of the nation's top investment firms donated hundreds of millions of dollars to the University of Michigan while the university invested as much as $4 billion in those companies' funds, a Detroit Free Press investigation found.
More than $400 million of that amount was sent into funds managed by three alumni who advise the university on its investments. Critics worry Michigan’s approach of investing with some of its top donors, who also help guide the university's nearly $11-billion endowment, creates a conflict.
How is this not buying indulgences from the Church of Global Warming? And how is it not corrupt?
If the claim is that AGW is causing people to die, does purchasing such indulgences allow one to feel no guilt about the people one has directly harmed?
Or is this like the Mafia boss who has people whacked Monday thru Saturday, but goes to confession on Sunday and is peachy clean?
The Catholic notion of confession has two parts: admitting to the sin, and resolving to avoid this sin. Purchasing indulgences allows one do to the first, but avoid the second. Martin Luther: hardest hit.

It’s a message that, after 25 years of dishing advice on the radio—spanning 9/11, the recession, Brexit and two seismic presidential elections—has remained brutally consistent. “If you’re waiting on a president to fix your life,” Ramsey said on the radio one week before Election Day 2016, “your life is gonna always suck. Have you not figured that out yet?”
Speaking of bombs in Texas. Go ahead, run on this.
At SXSW, Beto O'Rourke says there's no reason an AR-15 should be sold to civilians. “I have no idea how that polls and I should give a shit what the NRA” thinks about it.

In order to receive absolution for a sin, a Catholic must repent the sin and atone for said sin. Simply saying "I'm sorry" is not enough. If you stole something, you must give it back. If you murdered someone, you must turn yourself into the authorities.
Unless you have a corrupt or indifferent priest, you're not gonna get away with saying a coupla Hail Marys and going home. At least that's what I was taught in Catholic school.
And, as Darth points out, you must also resolve to avoid the sin going forward.

I believe it was still part of the belief system. Corrupt priests saw a way to take advantage of people's fear that a dead relative had not repented in time or that they themselves might die before confessing their minor sins.
One could not buy an indulgence for murder, but for lustful thoughts a few coppers in the collection plate could get one released from Purgatory early, a sort of Medieval "get out of jail free" card.
Purgatory was the compromise Catholic theologians had come up with for what seemed the inexplicably cruel fate of being consigned to an eternal Hell for minor sins left on the soul at death - a torment-filled, soul-cleansing waiting room before ascending into Heaven. That way, repentance was still an option for the faithful. Hell was reserved for major sinners.
The fate of one's eternal soul was of great concern in those days, so much more important than the temporary mortal existence. So, witches were burned in order to purify their souls, indulgences were sold, and heathens were converted at sword point - all efforts to save immortal souls. Even if it inflicted excruciating pain or discomfort on mortal bodies, if the immortal soul was saved, it was worth it.
Soon after Martin Luther proved rebellion against the Church was possible and that alternative theologies could be preached, John Calvin came along and sold a religious world that had despaired of the Church ever reforming on the idea that one's destiny was predetermined and nothing, not even repentance could change it; that some people were just "born bad."

Conan, back in it's hey day it was far more than that. The poor could pay for their dead relatives at affordable prices. But the main use was for the wealthy to buy off the church. Kings, queens, and merchants all bought indulgences for themselves while they were still alive. And then they bought the exact same indulgence a month later. Essentially they paid the church to ignore their terrible actions. Not doing it again may have been mentioned but it wasn't practiced. You may try to fob this off as a few corrupt priests but when those corrupt priests were the pope and the college of cardinals it doesn't mean much. If all of your leaders are corrupt then the organization is corrupt.
On the purgatory thing, that was more about babies than adults. Everyone has those residual sins. So you get last rites to deal with that. But everyone is also born with sin. And you can't get rid of it until you are baptized. And you couldn't get baptized until 10 or so. You had to be able to make an informed decision and speak the words. No one could say them for you. A consequence of this is stillborn babies go straight to hell. 'Your baby is rotting in fire for all eternity. Nothing can be done about it. Better luck next time.' Try selling that to a parent of a failed pregnancy. So purgatory was the compromise between universal original sin and God not being such a huge dick.
