After yesterday's bout of science=y preciousness, does anybody still wanna make fun of Ioannidis today?

Here's the Shirt again. I don't know where the 'fat animals' cartoon came from, but the tune makes a good cellphone alarm sound. See comments for composition secrets.
I know this is the WSJ and not some small-town newspaper that used to cover the school board meetings and Utility Commission hearings, but it's still kind of nice to see paper-print give such a sharp and deserved slap to the internet.
While I also enjoy the perspectives of those who are rational about what the internet might be costing them...

...It's nonetheless to that the average Facebook user is flatly oblivious to how his flightiest mouse clicks are being monetized.
Carney understands. And he knows that when the world's most successful populists shows up in Congressional hearings wearing a suit, the subsequent regulation will always be to his competitive advantage.

Wut? wait till they find out I carry a tactical assault pen. And a knife!
The same people who endured the Blitz is reduced to this? How did Sam Adams put it?
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.

Good links, Cridmo.
And yet, relatively few people are concerned that the NSA routinely hoovers up as much of that data as they can, and then stores it...forever? well, probably not, there has to be a practical limit to how long it can be retained.
But still, a very long time.

Also, since Apple cooperates with the Chinese government, don't be too sure your iMessage is actually protected. Who told you it was protected? Apple.
That applies to other data hungry tech giants who also cooperate with ChiComs. Looking at you, Alphabet.

No one founded Facebook with the idea of giving away a social network. The idea, from the beginning, was to deliver a captive audience to advertisers.
The user was always the product Facebook sold. Advertising has always been data driven. You don't advertise tractors to inner city youths. You advertise on the shows your audience watches, the magazines it reads, the Web sites it visits.
TV networks air shows to deliver viewers to advertisers. And AC Neilsen tells the advertisers who is watching what shows so the advertiser can target the advertising. Newspapers, radio stations, magazines, and every other advertising-supported mass communication vehicle follows the same model.
So do retail stores. You scan that card at the grocery store and your purchase goes into a database from which the company can figure out that people who buy a particular product also buy other specific products. Using demographic data, they can tell you the social class of the purchaser of almost any product in the store. The coupon you receive at checkout is targeted using that data.
Remember when Target dropped the bomb on Dad that his daughter was pregnant? Yep. That's how it works.
Facebook letting advertisers know who "likes" what pages and the demographic data behind the "likes" was a natural off-shoot of the company's original business model as well as business as usual for mass communication entities.
This morning I was looking for an article about Zuck's penchant for transparently bogus apology that was written in 2016, but seems to have slipped out of my archives. I'm ashamed.

How do you think they came up with this interesting tidbit, if not mining data from users?
Being shocked that this is happening is like Captain Renault being shocked to find gambling in a known gambling den.

From what base is this change calculated that we should be impressed by it?
Actually, all kidding aside, California's healthcare providers are very good.
