The second big & damning piece on Charlie Rose in two days.
Thing is, he was Charlie Rose... He wasn't that big a star, and never that deeply admired by anyone. It's strange to me that he carried such powers of intimidation for so many women who were themselves full of piss and vinegar.

It is an inherent part of a business that is chewing through people Crid. As insignificant as he was he could still get them fired with minimal effort. Such a business model invites abuse. And no level of #metoo purges will change that.

The rash of accusations of sexual shenanigans against men in "serious" positions of influence - Rose, Brokaw, Lauer, O'Reilly, et al - makes you wonder how such positions are filled, or if even the limited power of such positions corrupts the men in them.
And, as you point out, you would not expect a woman joining a hard-hitting news organization to be a shrinking violet; actresses, perhaps, but journalists must be made of sterner stuff.
Of course, I could say the same with regard to Al Franken and the rash of accusations against members of Congress. Copping feels at state fairs hardly seems a dignified thing for a US Senator to be doing. And the low-grade debauchery of it, was probably reason enough for him to lose his job (although, I still maintain that should have been left to the people of Minnesota to decide).
So, the questions is, why are we putting pre-pubescent perverts in positions of power and influence?

I love how your comments to me are so often offered in that portentously wizened, world-weary, sorry-to-break-your-heart-Kid tone of voice, as if we were sharing a beer in a bar and you were trying to explain difficult truths through a fog of tobacco.
...Even, as in this instance, when you're talking about the industry in which I've made a comfortable living across nearly half a century.

Which, of course, does nothing to set aside the observation.
So, you kept your mouth shut to keep your job, #metoo?

Snoopy, you're jumping to all sorts of conclusions and you know it. Why lie?
From Fox:
http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2018/05/05/evan-rachel-woods-calls-out-dj-khaled-after-says-would-never-perform-oral-sex-on-woman.html
Khaled continued on to say in the interview that though he would "never" perform oral sex on a woman, he does expect women to continue to "praise" the man and perform oral sex on him.
"It's different rules for men. You gotta understand, we the king," he said. "There's some things that y'all might not wanna do, but it got to get done. I just can't do what you want me to do. I just can't."

And, from Tom Carey's 1987 book "The Modern Guide to Sexual Etiquette: For Proper Gentlemen and Ladies" (this advice was given to a married woman whose husband insisted on being top all the time, which can make it pretty difficult for a woman to have an orgasm):
"There is only one real sexual etiquette problem. That is, having sex with the wrong person. Unfortunately, you can't tell this bozo to take a hike without calling a lawyer and no one needs that kind of headache. It is certainly correct for you to demand to be treated to a wonderful sexual experience every time. That's EVERY time, men. There is no rule of etiquette that prevents you from using several different positions during the same act. The thing to do is climb on top of him first..."
And re another problem (gross bathroom habits), he said:
"This sort of behavior is not considered polite even in today's permissive environment. However, just because he is behaving rudely doesn't give you the right to be impolite in turn. Your problem is, you moved in with this man before you checked out his personal habits."

Not to mention, men and women alike have to remember that even the Declaration of Independence doesn't say you're entitled to happiness; it only says you have the right to PURSUE it - and maybe fail.
As Katha Pollitt wrote in 1987: "You don't have a right to a child, any more than you have a right to a spouse. You only have the right to try to have one."
And, as I've mentioned before, when it comes to being childless (not childfree), there are generally only two reasons for not having the children you claim to want. Namely, poverty, and being very unpopular. (That includes being unpopular with adoption agencies, for whatever reason.) The same goes for sex and marriage, I would think.

Honestly Conan, why would you expect this? Especially from a TV news organization. Crid called this part of his industry, i.e. movies and TV. When I think of Charlie Rose or Tom Brokaw I think of a good set of hair not mental fortitude. Craig Kilborn lampooned this quite well when he started on the Daily Show. Similarly no one expects the weather girl knows meteorology. She has big boobs and can stand in front of a green screen, and that is pretty much it for qualifications.
Ben at May 6, 2018 4:55 AM
Well, Ben, for one thing, I was not talking about the "bubble-headed bleach blonde" reading the news. I was talking about the reporters and producers actually digging into the story, where tenacity is essential for breaking through stonewalling and obfuscation. Staffers were the primary victims of the Charley Roses and Matt Lauers, not on-air personalities. One expects our would-be Woodwards and Bernsteins to be made of sterner stuff.
Conan the Grammarian at May 6, 2018 6:29 AM
How much of that is actually done there? Seems like it is mostly AP and wire stories. There aren't any real reporters in the studios anymore.
