That's some camera. But I'd really like to know which brand of memory card was used. ~ I R A Darth Aggie at May 29, 2018 5:02 AM
It was the camera that protected the memory card. And from the photos, it looks like a Canon; the housing looks a lot like my EOS 6D. Also, you can see the remains of a "Ca" on the viewfinder housing.

Looking more closely at the FNC pictures, it's an EOS 5Ds. That's a $3,500 semi-professional camera.

RealClearScience decries low-carb diets as faddish and less-effective than their proponents claim.

From the article: "If they experience significant weight loss, it's because they reduced calories as a side effect of the diet change."
Any diet where you spontaneously eat less without getting hungry sounds good. Getting hungry is the main problem most people have in regards to sticking with a diet.

And any improvement in eating habits is usually good and will lead to a healthier person, whether low-carb, low-fat, or just eating less junk food.
I thought the denizens of this forum, and especially our hostess, would get a kick (or a rise) our of the article.

In a scene from Chapter 6 in the book "Cheaper by the Dozen," when Dad, an engineer, says this - in the year 1922:
“I want to teach all of you how to multiply two-digit numbers in your head,” Dad announced at dinner.
“Not of general interest,” said Anne...
...“Those who do not think it is of general interest may leave the table and
go to their rooms,” Dad said coldly, “and I understand there is apple pie for
dessert.”
Nobody left.
“Since everyone now appears to be interested,” said Dad, “I will explain how it's done.”

TaxProf brings us this from the WSJ:
Mike Meru, a 37-year-old orthodontist, made a big investment in his education. As of Thursday, he owed $1,060,945.42 in student loans.
Mr. Meru pays only $1,589.97 a month—not enough to cover the interest, so his debt from seven years at the University of Southern California grows by $130 a day. In two decades, his loan balance will be $2 million.
He and his wife, Melissa, have become numb to the burden, focused instead on raising their two daughters. “If you thought about it every single day,” Mrs. Meru said, “you’d have a mental breakdown.”
The UN is a great place to have diplomatic talks without admitting you are having diplomatic talks. Like Saudi Arabia talking with Israel. If they sent someone to Israel (or vice versa) then there would be blood in the streets. But sometimes it is nice to have a quiet talk and iron out some things.
As for the rest of the UN stuff, meh.

The UN has a unique problem in that its greatest strength is also its greatest weakness.
As Ben points out, the UN's purpose is to allow governments to discuss things in an environment of diplomacy and mutual cooperation.
However, in order to function as a dispute mediator, the UN must operate as if the government represented there is a legitimate government of the people of that nation and not a tinpot dictatorship. As a result, the UN indirectly conveys legitimacy to illegitimate governments.
So, a Saddam Hussein or an Idi Amin get to stand up in front of the world, recognized as the legitimate heads of the governments of their people, without those people having a say in who represents them to the world.
A rich vein.
