Make America Suck Up Trump Again
A tweet:
Sullivan: "Contempt for 'white people' is now background noise on the left." But this view "isn't shared by the public at large" & "defense of it by institutions like the New York Times will only serve to deepen the kind of resentment that gave us Trump." https://t.co/OEXJTL7Iql pic.twitter.com/pQROvGE52s

And a whole string of tweets:
Wow -- I'm shocked by the sheer volume here. There's a second string that goes on for a while if you look for it in the first string. https://t.co/0jcCvX2CBE

Little Fellers, Amy doesn't take role call... If she offends you, you don't have to come back. Meanwhile I don't see how this freakishly-individual fault-finding of yours differs from that of the leftoids you presumably decry.

Indeed, but I really enjoyed the way she spanked that NOAA guy around a few years ago.

Trump is a symbol and exemplar of the absolute frustration and exhaustion at the Left demanding the benefits of graciousness, forgiveness and tolerance...without having to pay the same coin in return.
They have been free riding for about 20 years now and violated a huge number of norms to their own advantage.
Trump, alas, is a norms violator as well...except he is aimed directly Leftward and seems to be far more effective than the Left in that Trump can speak to the independents.
The Left can barely speak to their own people and find their numbers decreasing.
So if Amy wants norms reintegrated in society, the people she needs to speak to are on the Left...but they refuse to listen to anyone.
And until the Left does heavy lifting at reinforcing things like Civil Rights for everyone, not their pet interest groups, I'm not listening to Amy either.
It is now a cultural knife fight. (And please spare me the 'bringing a knife to a gun fight' reference. It's tedious)

I am of two minds.
On the one hand if she has never called for the firing of others leave her alone, if she has toss her on the bonfire she helped to build
On the other, I am sick of calls for a return to civility only AFTER rightists start using leftists tactics against them, because there was never any civility to begin with and I like to watch shit burn
Which is precisely why I supported Trumps campaign

There are other guys here who do that too... All this language of war and knives and clashes from guys who are typing things on the internet and staying air-conditioned during the heat wave.
People really want to be angry about something, y'know?
But I doubt any of you are prepared for any sort of difficult encounter.

Great Jonah Goldberg piece:
"What these people are basically saying is that you can say bigoted things about all white people based on things other white people have done." ... "The more often people make these arguments, the more they are making white people think of themselves as white people."

Soon white people will be a minority in their own countries. If they don't start seeing themselves as white in a world where every other race has in group identity they will be in trouble. The hatred expressed for whites in elite western circles, remember this Sarah Jeong is a writer for the NYT now and Harvard law alum, might turn genocidal when whites become a minority.
Also keep in mind Jeong's family made the choice to live in America. They chose to be surrounded by white people. If she hates white people so much she sould be deported. After all what would happen to me if I came to china and insulted Chinese people? As a Jew I would want to deport any anti-semite who moved to Israel. It's just common sense.

So, like, we can now acknowledge that the internet (and possibly Twitter specifically) has coarsened the sensitivities of the American mind even more than did television, and I'd not have thought it possible... Most everyone who reads an offensive tweet imagines themselves being slaughtered by marauding Martian monsters on the farm at Grover's Mill.
She's a fricking kid from the Ivy League. She's not equipped to start a race war.

World?
Ask a black person in Africa his group identity and you're likely to get a tribal identity, perhaps a national one. Likewise Asia. Only in the US and parts of Europe has identity politics by race so taken over the discussion.
Identity politics is rooted in power - in getting it and keeping it. Getting that power depends strongly upon both a narrative of oppression (true or not) and collective guilt over that oppression narrative.
Identity politics is a disease unique to the Western democratic world, perhaps endemic to democracy itself. It germinated in the United States, where the culture was a melting pot polyglot and spread to Europe with immigration from former colonies and feelings of isolation and resentment in the new immigrants.
Ask any group of Frenchmen, black or white, what being French means and you'll get very similar answers. "French" is a culture by itself. Ask any American what being American means and you'll get a wide range of answers.
Why? Because the US was created, not evolved. We're the only self-made county in the world. We've had to absorb and assimilate more cultures than any other country in the world, and we've done a better job of that all of them.
"The hell’s the matter with you? Stupid! We’re all very different people. We’re not Watusi. We’re not Spartans. We’re Americans, with a capital A, huh? You know what that means? Do ya? That means that our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world. We are the wretched refuse. We’re the underdog. We’re mutts! " ~ John Winger (Bill Murray)
Even so, the later, and the less-represented, participants are left angry that their native culture is not better represented in that definition. Resentment builds and those of the majority who struggle to identify what exactly an "American" actually is, begin to feel guilty at excluding the resentful parties and try to build an expanded identity which only leaves the earlier assimilated ones angry about the expanded definition of "American" reducing their collective equity in that Identity.
Identity politics will tear the country apart, separating us into rival camps based on little more than anger and resentment toward the other camps. That's not a recipe for holding a country together; especially one built with such fragile bonds as ours was.
We need to start reminding ourselves that, despite our differences, we're all Americans. We were meant to disagree and challenge each other, but in the end, we have only each other on whom to rely.
"Whatever our differences, we are fellow Americans. And please believe me when I say no association has ever meant more to me than that." ~ John McCain

Conan the Grammarian. I wrote the comment you replied to. Normally I don't respond to replies but since yours was particularly interesting I thought it would be fun.
You write:
"Why? Because the US was created, not evolved. We're the only self-made county in the world. We've had to absorb and assimilate more cultures than any other country in the world, and we've done a better job of that all of them."
"We need to start reminding ourselves that, despite our differences, we're all Americans. We were meant to disagree and challenge each other, but in the end, we have only each other on whom to rely."
--Conan
The only cultures America has absorbed and assimilated have been white ones. Black people have been in America for about 400 years and they haven't assimilated. In the past Black people at least pretended to be "American," but now they are refusing even symbolic gestures like standing for the anthem. I think it’s fair to say that Black people already exist as a separate “Black Nation” in the body-politic. I am skeptical that America will be any better at assimilating Asians, Hispanics, Indians, or any of the other groups that came on mass post WWII.
As to your points on identity politics I used to think like you did. But then I realized two things.
1) I as a Jew have benefited tremendously from identity politics. Who am I to tell White people, the only group currently not playing Racial Identity politics, not to play.
2) Libertarians and Republicans have tried to get non-Whites to stop playing identity politics for decades. It never works; except for a few outliers like Thomas Sowell.
Conan I write this next bit assuming your white, but if you’re not let any white person reading this learn something.
In a world where every other group plays identity politics but Whites don't White people will suffer. As minorities demand more quotas at companies and slots in prestigious universities your children will have a harder time getting those jobs and entering those universities. Also White people are powerless to combat the anti-white ideology that started on campuses and is now more and more mainstream because they don't play identity politics.
If you want diversity that's fine. But you need to find a way to get rid of people like Sarah Jeong. There have to be legal mechanisms that allow you to deport her back to South Korea. Even though she is a US citizen. Even though her parents brought her here when she was little. You can no longer afford to be kind to people who will never return the favor.
Anyways have a good Saturday and sorry for any spelling or grammer mistakes.

Keep an eye on the White vote in coming elections.
Snoopy at August 4, 2018 9:31 AM
Au contraire, mon ami.
American art, cuisine, theater, literature, and music all owe a tremendous debt to African-Americans.
Every indigenous form of American music traces its roots to Africa: blues, gospel, jazz, rock and roll.
Fried chicken is today an insulting stereotype for African-Americans, but using 11 herbs and spices in the batter was not the brainchild of an elderly white man. Black-eyed peas, kidney beans, and okra were brought over from Africa to feed slaves and found their way into the American diet.
American scientific and mechanical prowess was greatly advanced by African-American contributions - i.e., George Washington Carver, Katherine Johnson, David Crosthwait, Jr. and others; not to mention, Lonnie George Johnson, who invented the Super Soaker.
As for Asian culture: acupuncture, herbal medicine, and feng shui are all the rage today. And those ideas didn't come from Europe. In addition, Asian cuisine has made its mark on American dining habits as well.
Even our language has absorbed Asian influences. US Marines proudly describe themselves as "gung-ho," a phrase that was copied from a Chinese expression, "gōng hé" (工合) which means "work together."
We can thank working class Tejana women for that American favorite, chili - but not for that Cincinnati abomination served over spaghetti noodles, that was strictly the white man's fault.
America is a sponge. We absorb.
Conan the Grammarian at August 4, 2018 10:18 AM
Ironically, that was one of your spelling or grammar mistakes, misspelling "grammar." :-)
Have a good Saturday, too.
Conan the Grammarian at August 4, 2018 10:21 AM
Conan, when I said cultures I meant peoples. I can't think of any non-White group that really sees itself as American. I should also clarify I am speaking statistically and there are exceptions. A minority of non-Whites probably do see themselves as Americans. But most don't; either they are hostile to White Americans or they see White Americans as a separate people and just see America as a place to make more money than back home. Compare this to Irish Americans, most of whom only remember their Irish roots on St. Patrick's day and have no interest in what's going on in Ireland.
I get that Americans can absorb non-white foods or music just fine. I just don't think they can absorb millions of non-whites with the same success.
Anyway take care. This time I'm out for good. Hopefully one day you'll see the light. But if not I can agree to disagree.
And again since you are a grammarian I apologize for any grammer/spelling mistakes.

Whites have gone out of their way to be gracious, generous, and helpful to minorities. Now they find that they are being demonized and hated in a fundamental way--in a way that has no forgiveness, that blames the current generation for slavery 180 yrs ago, that blames them for things they didn't do, that blames them even if their spouse is a minority. Well, if I am going to be called a racist and hated no matter what I do, FU, is what a lot of people are starting to think. All the progress of the last 70 years can be washed away like this in no time.

What a surprise— A commenter calling himself "Anonymous" is disinclined to dialectic exchange.
