This was the Saturday freak story, right? Remarkable that the guy himself is the one most eloquent about it.
Computer-wise, this is a good single tweet, and this is a good thread. (Via PH)

Came across this tweet celebrating Corey Booker's arbitrary release of documents marked "Confidential" in the Kavannah hearings.
Those mistakes are more than simple typos. Now, if I point out those errors, I'm an Internet troll and mansplaining. 'cause pointing out spelling and grammar errors is nothing more than a smoke screen to obscure the original message, right?
However, I see this as a sign of a widespread declining standard of literacy and attention to detail. We're in danger of becoming a careless nation. If we keep letting the little things slide, pretty soon we won't have enough attention to detail left to handle the little things that make up, and often derail, the big things.
Before we know it, we'll be crashing probes into Mars because someone forgot to convert the original specs from metric to imperial. What the hell, right? It was only a $125 million probe. We'll just build another one.
Careless is careless, whether it's in a simple tweet or a complex calculation of approach velocities. We are the indispensable nation; we can't afford to become the careless nation.
This rant ties in with the gifted students thread a few days ago. We need to increase our education standards, not normalize illiteracy and innumeracy.
Idiocracy cannot be a documentary. It simply can't.

I've always been a bit suspicious of that explanation. My expectation is that NASA has a standard set of units, be it SI or imperial, but it has one and it should be well known to the various parties, such as JPL and Lockheed-Martin.
And it isn't like that was either JPL or L-M's first rodeo. On the other hand, at least they didn't miss the planet

I understand that we can't ALLOW it to become a documentary, but I doubt the scenario from the movie itself is all that likely to happen. Why? Because the movie didn't take into consideration that the dumbest people tend to kill themselves off early - and so do their children. Think of the meth and opioid epidemics. Most of the "victims" aren't Ph.Ds. Not to mention that even not-so-smart poor couples are still SOMETIMES willing and able to ask their doctors for foolproof contraceptives. (Even smart people can forget to take pills.)

Hoo boy. Here's something similar.
From a well-known columnist in 2011, in reference to a 14-year-old girl in a separate forum who was planning to "prove her love" with her 15-year-old boyfriend:
"...the age of sexual consent in every U.S. state is between 16 and 18. Mom should point that out and assure the girl that she is not shy about pressing charges against the boy. When the girl tells him that—and she will—he will vanish.
"Lastly, dad is not mentioned by either mom or the therapist. Maybe he’s not in the home, but if he’s available, then he needs to sit down with his daughter and tell her how much he loves her and how important it will be to him that he walk a virgin to the altar, not to mention how important it will be to her husband."
First of all, the girl most likely DOESN'T have a loving father in her life, or she wouldn't be so desperate for affection. Obvious, right?
Somehow, it didn't occur to the columnist that most girls would never be fooled by that speech, even from a loving father, since they KNOW that most fathers born after 1970 just don't feel that way. Why, aside from the fact that most modern fathers are not super-religious? Well, most fathers that age understand that there are far worse things than having a daughter who has premarital sex at, say, 18 and then gets happily and confidently married at 30 or so. Namely, having a daughter who marries at 18 or even 21 out of impatience, guilt and loneliness, only to divorce in a few years and come home to the parents with a broken heart and a baby or two for the grandparents to help support. (Married couples are often more careless about birth control.)
You do NOT want to encourage a daughter to believe that marrying in haste as soon as she's of a legal age is automatically preferable to premarital sex. What good does that do? It all comes down to the unspoken message: "Abstain until marriage or death, whichever comes first." No one expects men to abstain even until age 25, and those men and women who do are assumed to be asexual, in the closet, or very unpopular. In other words, not good candidates for marriage - not even gay marriage!
