Snoopy, For these kinds of issues banning trade with China would be largely ineffective. Even if we don't trade with them they will still trade with other people we do trade with. The supply chain may get a little longer but there would be very little real effect. Especially since the price/weight ratio on chips is so high. Shipping costs are pretty much irrelevant. And that doesn't even take into account smuggling, counterfeiting, and other dark supply chain issues.

As for the various mineral China is trying to get global monopolies on (cobalt, rare earth, etc), they are largely 'dirty' minerals. I.e. producing them in any economically reasonable way involves a lot of environmental damage. The issue isn't that there are no minerals in other nations. The issue is that first world nations don't want the dirty business of mining and refining these products. They want to pay someone else to get sick and make toxic waste dumps while still getting their refined products. China largely wants to secure supplies for it's own industries. They've found out that they can't enforce a monopoly. As soon a prices rise enough to offset the cost of environmental laws first world nations start producing, ending the monopoly.
