Linkonomics
Because ergonomics is starting to smell like a big pile of pricey bullshit.
From the piece by Liam Mannix at The Age/Australia:
Using an "alternative" mouse combined with a shoulder support probably reduced the risk of neck and shoulder disorders, although alternative mice did nothing on their own.Beyond that, they could not find strong evidence showing any of the interventions worked.

That's what scorched earth politics gets us - the loss of good people like Mitch Daniels. Instead, we got grandstanding hypocrites, self-serving gluttons, double-dealing cheats, and an entire circus of feces-flinging monkeys.
Where are the modern-day Daniel Moynihans, Paul Tsongases, Jack Kemps, Barry Goldwaters - politicians who put the country over the party?
Hell, even Jesse Helms, Robert Byrd, Strom Thurmond, and "Tip" O'Neill would be better than the crowd we have today.

Amy, ergonomics has always been a scam, a homeopathic front to sell high-priced chairs, computer mounting hardware, screen guards, phone headsets, and other paraphernalia; another basis for a lawsuit if you don't give an employee that lumbar support cushion she/he so desperately needs. It's another way for HR to gain power over the productive departments of the company, by emphasizing its role in employee "wellness.".

This is why I think the Republic is irreparably broken and will need a reboot/reset. It's just that it is going to suck a lot to get to that point, and it will continue to suck after that for a while even if the reset goes well.
If it doesn't...whoo boy.

Referencing a video of "Lindsey Graham's tirade," Fair, who is a victim of sexual assault, added, “all of them deserve miserable deaths while feminists laugh as they take their last gasps."
"Bonus: we castrate their corpses and feed them to swine? Yes," she concluded the tweet."

The thing is, we could fix it. Unfortunately, we the voters, are the ones who broke it. We elected, and keep re-electing, the feces-flinging monkeys - from both parties.
As bad as some of those "old white men" from the '70s were, they at least understood their main function was to govern, not to score partisan points for a fanatical base.
Ted Kennedy, another of those "old white man," however, was one of the worst. He and Joe Biden orchestrated the "borking" of Robert Bork and the "high tech lynching" character assassination that was the Clarence Thomas hearing. That hearing with its anonymous, unsubstantiated, and contentious charges of sexual harassment was the blueprint for the current Kavanaugh fracas.
Sadly, I don't think we can trust anyone in government or academia today to write a simple and durable plan for the governance of a republic like our Constitution. Every constituency in America will demand specific mention in any new charter.
Just look at our state constitutions. At almost 75,000 words, the California constitution is longer than the owner's manual of a Toyota Corolla. At more than 369,129 words, Alabama's constitution is 47.5 times longer than the US Constitution at 7,762 words.
Granted, there's a difference between a national charter and a state charter, but that kind of wordiness in a new charter, we just don't need.
Conan the Grammarian at October 1, 2018 11:34 AM
And it's going to get worse as time passes on. Laws are like software: People -in the law's case it's lawyers- can hack workarounds by misinterpreting things on purpose. Hence these constitutions are getting bigger and clunkier in order to patch out these holes.

KILLING newborn babies should be allowed if the mother wishes, Australian philosophers have argued in a prestigious journal.
Their argument, that it is morally the same as abortion, has forced the British Medical Journal to defend its publication of their views.

So what. We have to wait a week for this FBI investigation to be over. You know, it sickens me to say it (being raped myself at gunpoint) but this woman is not exactly coming off as truthful. Well. That felt good. I still find the left way more detestable but

Yes... She's describing the idiot rhetoric of others, people who can't get their communication in order. (Examples of this illiteracy on this very blog come to mind... You'll never guess!) Meanwhile, do your darnedest to understand that describing anger isn't the same as being angry.
McArdle's been internet-famous (and -admired) for the better part of twenty years. She wrote dozens of good blog posts, and now hundreds
of worthwhile columns... And a couple dozen really stellar ones, things to store on a disk and share with friends as needed. She's been —in the style seen also from Alkon— remarkably blunt about her thinking and her humbling personal choices. Also, she wrote a good book. She shares ideas with brisk clarity on radio, television and appearances. And she hangs out with other cool people, like her husband, and the other peeps from Reason, and a number of admired names from when blogging (etc.) was new. She's about as comfortable a personality as you'll find in her generation's punditry.
> Credentialist!
Well, Big Mac ain't ivy or nuthin'. But if you're asking, I certainly admire people who are smart, clear-headed and frank more than those who aren't.
Specifically, I trust her to be ironic as well as flatly descriptive when she writes. She won't deceive people or be murky, as if her thoughts had latticework too intricate to share.
I have sincere doubt that you understand what irony means, or you wouldn't have been running from the question for the last two weeks, in your defensive, short-form, sentence-fragment style: Do you mean "war," or don't you? I think it's pretty obvious that you don't.
But them grownups and skool grajiates with their complete, straightforward sentences are intimidating, right?
Crid at October 1, 2018 11:10 PM
To Sixclaws and Ben:
I should have asked: "Was Amy D.'s advice appropriate or just a little too naive?"
(I suspect Miss Manners would NEVER have given the advice that Amy D. did; MM is a good deal more pragmatic than her non-readers believe. Likely, she would have suggested saying "I beg your pardon" with an alarmed look - and to keep on walking. After all, it wasn't as though the man gave HIS personal information first - or even claimed to live there.)
Btw, it's also perfectly possible they were both white - or both black. Nothing to suggest that the LW left out anything important.
lenona at October 4, 2018 3:57 PM
I won't say Amy D's advice was wrong. But I also won't say it was right. Assuming the writer presented the facts correctly, the guy acted fairly inappropriately and threatening. And also in an unusual way. Since it is unusual most of us wouldn't be prepared for such a situation. So responding poorly is very understandable. Trying to deescalate the situation is a good choice. Lying while doing it is not, but is also understandable. Getting caught in that lie at a later date is likely which is why it isn't a good solution. So being vague and retreating is the best solution I have. Saying 'Over on South Street. I'm late. Bye.' for example. But that would require cutting this off earlier than she did. Quite frankly by the time she had gotten where she was there aren't any good solutions left. So you just muddle through it as best you can and move on.
On the race issue, I don't think it is really significant no matter the mixture. Being black or being white or pink with purple polka dots doesn't give you special privileges or right. The offense is purely a weapon used against the polite and the solution is to not give in.
A few years back a black friend and I (I'm white) were walking down the street. I don't remember where we were going or why. But a black guy walked up to my friend and asked him for a ride. They went back and forth a few times and after my friend said no enough the guy left. Once he was gone I told my friend that my car is near by and if his friend really needed a ride I could help. He responded he doesn't give rides to strangers. I.e. he didn't know who that guy was either. I've never had someone come up to me at random and ask for a ride like that. After all it is obvious that the answer would be no. That this random stranger was pissed off at my friend is irrelevant. His request was completely inappropriate. His offense at not getting his way is irrelevant. Same with Mr. I want to know exactly where you live, oh and if you could give me your bank pin code too that would be great.
