The Minority Opt-In
In a whole lot of arenas, it sucks to be a white guy right now, trying to get ahead.
White women do better on intersectional grounds, but you can understand why a woman would find it advantageous to invent a little heritage "of color."
"As identity politics and victimhood become the party's defining signals of virtue, it's only natural that some white people want part of a more in-demand cultural identity," writes Matt Lewis at The Daily Beast:
Elizabeth Warren wants to be Native American. Robert Francis O'Rourke wants to be Latino. But they aren't.... O'Rourke is obviously an Irish surname, but the Latino nickname "Beto" (short for Robert Francis) suggests Hispanic heritage.
In a piece boasting about this "Irish-American" candidate, the Irish Examiner newspaper explains that "O'Rourke is the son of Melissa Martha Williams and Judge Pat Francis O'Rourke, whose forebears emigrated to Texas from Ireland in the 19th century to help build a railroad in the state."
Just as the gatekeepers at Cherokee Nation felt slighted by Warren calling herself a Native American, O'Rourke has faced similar obstacles from official sanctioning bodies. Back in 2013, for example, he was deemed ineligible for membership in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. "For us, we have to have Hispanic descent to be in the caucus," Kristian Ramos, the CHC's communications director, explained to the Texas Tribune.
To be fair, O'Rourke's childhood in El Paso takes the edge off of what might be viewed differently if he, say, just moved to the state and adopted the nickname. Still, one wonders what people would think if I started calling myself "Mateo."

The given first name of O'Rourke's opponent is Rafael, yet he goes by Ted.
O’Rourke, whose family has lived in El Paso for four generations, has said that Beto was a nickname given to him by his parents at birth. If that's true, then I don't see the nickname as indication that he "wants to be Latino."

Rachel Dolezal can "identify as black" and be accepted - even so far as to be allowed to continue as head an NAACP chapter after being outed as not black.
However, the media still won't identity George Zimmerman as Hispanic, even though he is, because of his Germanic-sounding last name. And because it interferes with their narrative.
Warren and O'Rourke identifying as races different from their own does not interfere with the narrative, so that's allowed. In fact, those tall tales can be twisted to help the narrative.
Identifying Ted Cruz or Marco Rubio as Hispanic allows the "wrong" people into the circle, so that can't be allowed. Besides, they're Cuban-American and can't be labeled Hispanic because Cuban-Americans refuse to follow the party line narrative.
Likewise, celebrating Condoleezza Rice as the first black female Secretary of State allows the "wrong" party to claim credit for an integration first, so that must be downplayed or ignored.
The narrative should be dead anyway. Identity politics is fraught with peril.
I used to work with a blonde, blue-eyed woman from Colombia - a "white" woman to identity politics. She said that Colombia was full of European-descended people who did not fit the stereotype Hispanic mold, as well as descendants of freed black slaves. She did admit, however, that she dyed her hair, that it was naturally black - saying many women in Colombia dye their hair blonde - mostly due to racism in Colombia that favors European heritage over Hispanic, Mestizo, or African heritage.
I also worked with a guy who had a Hispanic surname from his Portuguese-American adoptive father. He was bombarded with offers to join Hispanic organizations, apply for Hispanic scholarships, etc. Genetically, he was as white as I am.

For what it's worth, Brazil is only about half white. But Argentina is probably over 95% white.

It's noteworthy that people like Barack Obama, who is half white, don't want to be known as white. If white privilege existed, they would want that.

White people need identity politics. They are being attacked on racial grounds so they should defend themselves on racial grounds.
A lot of libertarian types don't seem to realize that identity politics is not going away. You will never convince Jews/Asians/Blacks to not practice identity politics. The only move is to embrace identity politics.

Heritage and genetics are interesting. I believe that your Jewish heritage has an impact on you. You identify with a minority’s who has been abused and repressed yet has overcome. By looking at you, we do not know your heritage but being Jewish is in your soul.
My mother told me that when you “stick to your own kind”, weak genes come to the surface as evidenced by the deafness in our family and hemophilia and mental retardation in the royal bloodlines. She said that when people mix, the dominant genes come through and generations are healthier. She remembers her Native American grandmother. She didn’t know her grandmother’s dna but she looked full-blooded to her.
While my mother and sister’s dna reveal Native American blood, mine does not. Being raised in a family where we were taught to respect other cultures however, is definitely part of my culture.
My in-laws still is the word nigger. When I revealed that my dna and our son’s dna revealed African heritage, my mother-in-law, said, “Well then, you are black. If you have one drop, then you are black. That’s what the law says.” I said,”That’s good, now when you use the word nigger, you will know that you are talking about your grandchildren.”
I believe that everyone can be racist or inclusive regardless of race but knowing that you have a diverse background and embracing it can changes your soul. When I hear about injustice I feel it. It’s personal. It always has been. I don’t think that my in-laws feel the same way at the soul level.
Perhaps that is what people are trying to say.
PS. I’m sure that you can feel the same thing if you are immersed in a culture regardless of genetics.

Obama can't be recognized as white whether he wants it or no, very few Americans are going to look at him and see a white guy. He doesn't "pass"

So Jen, I see you didnt miss an opportunity to slip in another nasty comment about your husband or your supposedly racist inlaws.
Why would you even engage these people on the subject of DNA to the possible detriment of their relationship with their grandchildren?
They dont understand what these tests are testing for and neither do you.
I did my 93 year old mother’s along with mine, and the test found a tiny percentage of African ancestry.
My red headed sun burn through a light shirt pale mother is whiter than Elizabeth Warren. This information would upset her to no purpose. So I never showed her the test.
So I guess my real question for you, is why are you so sneaky and nasty? No wonder your elderly inlaws are looking for an excuse to dislike you. They apparently have plenty of reasons.
