Three things I recommend as gifts:

One is James Beard Award winners Karen Page (and Andrew Dornenberg's) Kitchen Creativity, an incredible reference for somebody who wants to learn the basics of cooking so they can really go creative in the kitchen. I was thrilled to give this to my agent last year.
