But five years later, McWhorter suggests that bitterness fueled by social media on smartphones has squandered any growth in race & class relations that we might have hoped to enjoy on November 5th, 2008.

And make no mistake, social media has seriously sinister and unanticipated effects, hurtfulness that can't be blamed soley on Zuck or Twitter. Consider five or ten minutes of this Haidt speech, or see any of his internet appearances over the last year or two. (Or read his books.)
I think Bannon is correct that what we presently call populism is changing politics forever. Many of can imagine that enormous change in our approach to government was something that needed to happen, even if the changes underway wouldn't have been our choice.
But it's happening in context of badly miscalibrated interpersonal communication through new media.
Things could go really, really badly. A 70% increase in suicide by teenage girls is a terrible thing, and suggests that grave apprehension is not merely my appropriate indulgence for the start of old age.

Paris Riots: France burns in worst civil unrest in 50 years; who are the Yellow Vests?
Masked protestors torched buildings, cars, and police posts and even looted shops in Paris. They carried clubs and axes and rampaged through monuments, supermarkets and other buildings. The iconic Arc de Triomphe was among the hundreds of buildings attacked.

Well, we can always go back to the past, Gog, with Wall Street being a good ol' boys club.
Across Wall Street, men are adopting controversial strategies for the #MeToo era and, in the process, making life even harder for women.
Call it the Pence Effect, after U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, who has said he avoids dining alone with any woman other than his wife. In finance, the overarching impact can be, in essence, gender segregation.
Lu Guang’s photos have exposed the sides of China that its government isn’t keen on talking about: drug addicts, HIV patients, environmental problems, and so on. This time, however, the award-winning photographer has himself become the center of a story. His wife Xu Xiaoli claims she hasn’t heard from her husband since the 3rd of November.
This was kinda funny in 2013.
