I read somewhere that, at one point in medieval Europe, Catholic Spain had the best universities in the world. However, Spain's academia fell prey to the ideology the dominated its politics.

While the professors in Spain's universities devolved into debating how many angels could dance on the head of a pin, professors at Europe's other universities were doing math and physics, searching the night sky for clues about the galaxy, and improving our understanding of the human body.

As its universities moved away from studying the physical world and into debating (and enforcing) theology, Spain's once world-beating economic and military prowess fell precipitously.
