On this day in 1933, Adolf Hitler was sworn in as Chancellor of Germany.

With the National Socialist German Workers party then the largest in the Reichstag, Hitler had been chosen to head a coalition government in Weimar's parliamentary democracy. Fritz von Papen, a former Chancellor, assured the other conservative parties in the coalition that he could control Hitler, "Within two months we will have pushed Hitler so far in the corner that he'll squeak."

The Nazis were given only three of the eleven Cabinet positions in this coalition. The other positions went to the other German conservative parties. Papen had promised his allies that he would sideline Hitler and run the government himself.

By this time, Hitler had given up any pretense of adherence to the stated tenets of National Socialism and was pursuing power for power's sake. In 1934, he would execute the remaining true believers of his own party in what has come to be called, "The Night of the Long Knives" when they became liabilities to his then-tenuous hold on power.

IRA Dargh, Georgetown TX is incredibly welk to do and incredibly old. The population is heavily skewed to upper middle class retirees who prefer not to live along smelly expensive kids. Theyve got the money to spend on whatever suits their fancy. And they LOVE their Mayor. Its amusing to me as a Texan, that the staunchly conservative Republican town of Georgetown is more liberal in many of its actions than Austin is. "100% green" energy. Mandatory recycling for decades. The animal shelter has been no kill for decades (it's a fancy, 3 story one, too).

Schools are crap, though. That's not where the priority is. Families live in Round Rock. Financially well to do retirees own Georgetown. No need to weep for their electric bills.
