Which calls to mind the other grand question raised by this scandal: If these kids weren't academically equipped to matriculate without deception, what does it say about the quality of the programs that no one involved has expressed any worry that they might wash out with bad grades?

Harvard. Yale, etc. Not Caltech, MIT or even the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
