Any lawyerly types have speculation to offer about federal charges for Smollett?

It depends. Did Smollett send himself the threatening letter laced with crushed aspirin, and can that be proved? if so, that's a big no-no, as that's a terrorism beef.
Not something either the USPS inspector general or the DOJ are likely to ignore.

This old guy lumbers around someplace, we don't know where, and behind him are a bunch of Norman Rockwell types, but all I can concentrate on are these big-boobed girls who are tagging along.

I doubt anyone will look into that IRA. The case has been dropped by Cook county. It has also been sealed. In exchange Smollett gave up on his $10k bond. Essentially he paid his way out of this.
And even for things not in Cook county this outcome is pretty normal. Here around Houston a few decades ago we had a black church with swastikas spray painted on it, crosses burned on the front lawn, and other racist trash left lying around. This also happened just before a vote on requiring state IDs for public voting. It was soon discovered (but after the vote on IDs happened) that the spray paint was water based. A little soap and water and it was all gone. The pastor had purchased several cans of such paint in matching colors right before the attack. Along with lumber, nails, and gasoline. You don't have to be too bright to tell that the pastor faked the whole thing. Cops just told him not to do it again, no charges.
That is how this is normally delt with. Remember mattress girl? How about that girl with the B carved in her forehead? And those are just national stories. You find lots more that are faked for local issues. It is pretty rare that anyone gets charged much less prosecuted. And that is why only the credulous believe such things now a days.

Smollett and his fellow Empire castmate, Taraji Henderson, are proclaiming is innocence and saying justice has been done with the charges being dropped.
What I don't get is why the prosecutor who dropped the charges didn't get make a deal from him that he plead guilty so that, afterward, he could not go around denigrating the CPD or maintaining his innocence.
Instead, she dropped the charges and stated publicly that his community service and the forfeit $10,000 bond was satisfactory punishment for the crime in the eyes of the state. The charges were dropped. There was no crime in the eyes of the state.
She's allowed a Hollywood actor (see if he ever sets foot in Chicago again) to make a mockery of the CPD and of her own office. What strip mall clown college gave her a law degree?
Chicago's Police Superintendent has asked for a DoJ investigation. He'll probably get it. Whether it will result in any charges filed remains to be seen.

A fisking of a WaPo article on New Zealand's gun ban. Emphasis mine.
What the authors don’t understand is that gun owners are not a top-down kind of people. They don’t wait for “leaders” to tell them what to think like the statists do.
And that’s why New Zealand gun control won’t work in America (and may not work in New Zealand either). It has nothing whatsoever to do with the electoral system, nor the NRA, nor any of the other bits of “wisdom” imparted to these authors by the “gun experts.”
American gun owners won’t comply. And that’s the end of the story right there. It’s really rather simple, and I could have boiled this all down to that single sentence.

Oh Jussie.
CWBChicago is posting the complete Chicago Police Department investigative file on the Jussie Smollett "hate crime" investigation that we have received in response to a Freedom of Information Act request.
We have not read or reviewed the files for completeness or accuracy.
Tina Tchen, she of Michelle Obama and Jussie Smollett fame, has been hired by the Southern Poverty Law Center to investigate their culture of sexism, racism, and on-the-job harassment.

I bet Tina Tchen makes the SPLC problems disappear. Just like Jussie's.
Celebrity justice:
Cook County clerk’s office tells @ABC they were shocked that no written motions were filed with the court in connection with today’s surprising dismissal in the Smollett case. On top of that, the case has been wiped off their database as if it never existed.
In Crid's "Kamalian" link, the main problem isn't Harris (for once), but public education. There stories after stories of school officials ignoring documented problems and blindly "following procedure" even when they already agreed that this kid was an exception.
What do you expect? It's a monopoly, so there are no penalties for incompetence and indifference. Parents are often arrested for neglect and abuse that is far less harmful than sending their kids to such a school!

While I applaud the SCDMV's initiative to make money, I have to wonder about the legality in not offering an opt out.
