""Science is starting to listen"?"
Yeah, I don't buy this, either. Not only are there tens of thousands of amateur astronomers watching the sky at all times, in most nations, there are a couple of problems with positing "aliens" here with us.
The first is transit time. Unless somebody really DOES discover "warp drive" or "hyperdrive", such that you don't have to deal with distances as we see them in normal space, you're in for really long hauls, even FTL. So your ship does 8C, gets up to speed instantly? Still takes a YEAR to get to Sirius if you wanna go there.
Carrying food and water, I hope?
The second is obstruction. If you get up to about 1/3C in normal space, impact with hydrogen atoms causes spalling of your forward surfaces, which produces a gamma radiation field proportional to the density of the hydrogen and your speed, and any pebble big enough to see will blow you away.
It's a marvelous thing to think, that there's a fleet watching us, but we'd be the victims of any serious visit. Ask any aboriginal people, if you can find some, what happened when the ships appeared on their horizon.

...Other studies have measured some financial and health benefits in being married for both men and women on average, which Dolan said could be attributed to higher incomes and emotional support, allowing married people to take risks and seek medical help.
However, Dolan said men showed more health benefits from tying the knot, as they took fewer risks. Women’s health was mostly unaffected by marriage, with middle-aged married women even being at higher risk of physical and mental conditions than their single counterparts.
Despite the benefits of a single, childless lifestyle for women, Dolan said that the existing narrative that marriage and children were signs of success meant that the stigma could lead some single women to feel unhappy.
“You see a single woman of 40, who has never had children – ‘Bless, that’s a shame, isn’t it? Maybe one day you’ll meet the right guy and that’ll change.’ No, maybe she’ll meet the wrong guy and that’ll change. Maybe she’ll meet a guy who makes her less happy and healthy, and die sooner.”

Define "buy"… As Mpet was asked to define "taken more seriously."
These are dares not to expand our understanding of the world around us, but pleas to weaken language such that dim people can float along in a river of poorly-articulated fantasy.
No, really... What do you want? *What* was "taken more seriously"? What were the consequences and lessons from this 'seriousness'?

On the Gillette thing, well, if the person's hormone treatments result in facial hair growth, then the use of razors in a traditionally-male manner wouldn't be out of line. If they're not actually growing a noticeable amount of hair there, then shaving is more of a performative display of masculinity to bolster their gender identity, which might be criticized as silly and pointless by those not sharing the same ideologies. At any rate, none of this justifies a degree of nastiness that would prompt boycotts and denunciations against the company.

"At any rate, none of this justifies a degree of nastiness that would prompt boycotts and denunciations against the company."
Maybe, but by the same token, it also doesn't justify Gillette's prices being about three times as high as Dollar Shave Club. Market competition: I'm not sure Gillette understands the concept.
Cousin Dave at May 30, 2019 1:01 PM
Oh, they get it. They just don't know what to do about it. Gillette owned the shave market for so long, they've forgotten how to compete. Their razors are mediocre, their shave products are generic, and their advertising is designed to show the company as socially responsible because the VP of marketing read somewhere that Millennials like socially responsible companies.
Meanwhile, those Millennials the company's trying to reach are buying their razors from Harry's and DSC for the lower price and better quality.
A lot of "old economy" companies got caught flat-footed by the Millennial tendency to avoid any company Mom or Dad used, any brand Mom or Dad wore, and any business or social custom practiced by Mom and Dad. They read that Millennials like authenticity and social responsibility, so they went over board on both, without actually understanding what Millennials meant by those terms.

I think it's obvious that Mr. Dolan was trying to demonstrate how foolish OTHER people sound when they don't think before speaking.
Or, maybe those hypothetical people ignore the woman's age because they think that making patronizing statements like that is the "nice" thing to do. Certainly, people at Bratfree often complain that their relatives, among others, refuse to stop saying "you'll change your mind and have kids," no matter how old the childfree person is. I can only hope that most American communities do not consist of people who believe in constantly invading the privacy of their friends and relatives.
lenona at May 30, 2019 2:10 PM
Not to mention that while the few women willing to surrender their babies for adoption often prefer couples under 40, adoptive couples can and do adopt after age 40. (Many modern couples don't even marry till age 30 and may take even longer to find that one of them was born infertile, so the number of middle-aged adoptive couples isn't surprising.)

Excerpt:
...while not always the case, adoptive parents tend to be older.
Although the United States does not have a federal regulation regarding a maximum age at which a parent can adopt, Lestino says it’s up to the states to determine the age of parents for both infant and foster adoption.
Many states will require parents to be at least 18 to 21 years old and a certain amount of years older than the child they’re adopting.
“Typically there’s no age limit on the other end,” Lestino says. “As long as parents are capable of parenting the child they’re being matched with, in most cases there aren’t rules around age. Adoption professionals can see that with age comes a certain level of resilience, responsibility, and experience that can be beneficial to parenting. As long as they’re physically capable of caring for the needs of a child, age is neutral.”...

"I can only hope that most American communities do not consist of people who believe in constantly invading the privacy of their friends and relatives."
Your hopes are in vain Lenona. This isn't an American thing. It is a human thing. The phenomenon is world wide. America is actually one of the less intrusive places out there. Talk to some middle easterners or even Germans. Momma wants to know about your recent poops. I have no idea why those groups are so obsessed about poop. In asia if you don't get married and start having kids on time your parents will pay to organize dates for you. Against your will. Those US inquiries into your family life are quite tame by comparison.
You are right about adoption being an older person's game in the US. Even more than that it is a byzantine bureaucratic game. Most who want to adopt can't. But if you've succeeded in adopting you actually have a good chance of adopting again.
As for others claiming the over 40 will have kids, I'm guessing that is made up. Most people from previous generations were aware that over 30 you probably weren't having kids. And that is just how life is. Instead I've seen lots of women in my generation who are in their 30s talk about how they'll have kids later. And it just doesn't happen. They had no idea they were coming up on menopause until it was too late.
Out of curiosity. What are your feelings about the professions at bratfree?
Ben at May 30, 2019 3:47 PM
On the Gillette thing, I posted earlier that they've lost the male shaving market and nothing they've come up with is fixing that. So the company had decided to abandon the market and focus on where they are selling well, women. So this lefty insulting advertising is what they think women want to see.
The really significant thing is if Gillette's sales are to be believed then Gillette is right. This type of advertising is what US women want to see.
A lot of millenials matured during the Obama economy. So a lot of them have a great depression mentality like the greatest generation had. As Conan noted Gillette can't compete on cost or quality. Harry's and DSC blow them out of the water with a cheaper and better product. Hence millenial men are a dying market for Gillette. This has been going on for some time and the execs at Gillette are well aware of it. But millenial women appear to be willing to pay quite a bit more for a functionally inferior product as long as you color it pink and use far left advertising. They are willing to pay the so called 'pink tax'.
This isn't a non-economic move. Gillette isn't being stupid. They are vile and insulting. But this is the smart money move for the brand and it's current products.

"Ok, but do you buy this?"
No, and not because it's the New York Post.
Keep in mind that I recognize that fundamental discoveries like radio and the laser are not exhausted, likewise with ideas like Doppler beam-sharpening, frequency agility in radio, etc.
But people want to believe things so badly...
There's a guy, showed up at Dragoncon, passed all sorts of polygraph tests about his abduction by aliens. Yet he cannot describe any correlation between sounds and movement of the room he claims he was locked in, etc.
At the same time this casts doubt on his observational skills, it begs a question about the advancement of the abductors, and what should be the prime question anyone asks about this stuff:
Why are they here?
There's no consumption of local resources. Why not?
About observations:
Check the opening scene of The Eiger Sanction, starring Clint Eastwood. We see what appears to be a cleft in rock, probably granite, and the score is suspenseful. Surely there will be a gun emerging from that cleft.
But the camera starts to zoom. And zoom. And zoom. Invisible at first, we now see climbers in the cleft - it's a mountainside. The camera had beem miles away.
Distance is always hard to estimate without scale. Want me to take you seriously about a UFO? Show me the radar track the coresponds to the observation. Oh, wait, they all have stealth technology. Bigfoot apparently flies.
