Some Silicon Valley residents don’t want new apartment buildings changing their suburban towns, and they get angry at the thought of affordable housing bringing poorer people to their neighborhoods. Two years ago, about 500 local residents showed up at a meeting to discuss small, temporary housing in San Jose. Many screamed and shouted at Loving and her colleagues. At one point, the crowd chanted “build a wall” to keep homeless people away.
Not a link, but... I wish spell checkers had an option to highlight the part of the word you spelled wrong. As a phonetic reader, unstressed vowels drive me nuts. Sometimes I have a hard time seeing the difference between what I typed and the corrected spelling.

Wondering whence you summoned new outrage and having been offline for a couple of days, I went to look, and as I suspected found you made some mistakes.
Here's the key, from Isab, emphasis mine: "I would have chosen not to replace her pacemaker generator last week, which is what she wanted too(sic), up until the time she was facing death if it wasn’t done."
And so you summoned up offense at what you imagined I said rather than what I did in subsequent comment, somehow in the process coming to the conclusion that I supported some distant authority callously cutting off oxygen or something.
NO. What I pointed out was and is that if you intend an official third party to take care of the difficult decision of when and how to off somebody, you are going to get somebody distant and totally uninvolved.
I get it if you were offended that my comment looked like condemnation of the eminently capable Isab; I didn't credit her enough to show how difficult decisions like those are.
Criminy. We are going to get the equivalent of a TSA agent to dispose of Memaw if we cannot do things right by our elders ourselves. This is shown everywhere. It ought to be most obvious in the VA cases where they were found to let veterans die to reduce their workload.
That's your government euthanasia team: the VA!
Life is hard, it's harder if you're stupid, but it is NOT easier if you're smart. Delegating a task like "a dignified death" is wonderfully attractive to everyone who doesn't want to look away from their phone, much less imagine a loved one suffering, but there isn't a good way out of this. There won't be any way for a third party to intervene without surrendering your last bit of personal liberty to a nation which already thinks your every move is their business.
I have been lucky. I have not had to "pull the plug" on a loved one (no, pets do not count, people, though they offer another opportunity to demonstrate one's character). I have seen the effects of seeing this kind of suffering on several friends at work, because I have been here many years. I have visited hospitals in support of families. I could not turn back time to give them another minute with a sane and comfortable parent, but they knew that it is not possible to shift some burdens.
If they were not there for Mom or Dad, who would be?
