Law prof Ilya Somin's inspiring and fascinating 42-page memoir, starting with his emigration from the Soviet Union as a young boy. I dipped into it and couldn't stop reading -- I just read the whole thing.

Big week for poignant stuff. I've always had a secret crush on this girl. She's a little young for me, but… Or she was a little young for me.

We should ask this guy questions:
- Will I find true love?
- Which stock, Uber or Lyft?
- Flying cars, right?
Totally flying cars, I'm sure.Crid at June 7, 2019 6:05 AM
Someone was whistling "Brian's Song" at breakfast. I hadn't heard it for several decades, so I looked it up on Wiki. Turns out Gale Sayers has dementia. America sux.
Well, football sux. So do trite teevee movies.

I want to kevetch about my water bill. And not just because I'm a cheapskate.
We've had the conversation about taxing the poor or just taxing thing in odd or inappropriate places. Ferguson riots and all that. Well, I look at my water bill and I use $10-$30 of water a month. What can I say, water is cheap here in Houston. The issue is I pay $80-$100 in taxes on that bill each month. Which feels crazy to me. Some of what they spend the tax money on I support and a lot of it I don't. But even so having 90% of my bill be taxes just feels excessive. I could cut the water line to my house and my bill would not significantly change. And the flip side as well. Run a hose out to the storm drain and just let it run. So what? My bill didn't really go up.
Now ~$100/mo isn't a big deal for me. I'm doing all right. But for a lot of people in Houston that isn't a small issue. Maybe I'm crazy and I just need to be told so. It's just having 90% of my bill be taxes feels really off to me.

Interesting article: Drowning Does Not Look Like Drowning
Drowning is almost always a deceptively quiet event. The waving, splashing and yelling that dramatic conditioning (television) prepares us to look for is rarely seen in real life.
The Instinctive Drowning Response, so named by Francesco A. Pia, Ph.D., is what people do to avoid actual or perceived suffocation in the water. And it does not look like most people expect it to. When someone is drowning there is very little splashing, and no waving or yelling or calling for help of any kind.

One syllable, Cowpoke.
> …about my water bill.
Right? It's getting to the point where a Dallas cityslicker making $165K can't do his homework in a centralized clearinghouse without his ballsack drying out.

Ben, people say the things they want to say: That's how conversation works. Those who whine would prefer a world of lectures, and would prefer always to be at the lectern.

The miscreants weren't identified other than being teenaged males. I suspect that means that they're south asians and in Brit, that means Pakistanis.
So, no, not taking the bet.

There's one facet of the Virginia Beach monster's life which has not been described by the New York Times. But I bet even Darth won't be able to guess!
