Meet the Mayor of Iowa...
Politicians elected to do a job really have no business running for office while in office (unless they do that solely in their spare time, like regular people with jobs do when pursuing their outside interests). https://t.co/mSP8gW0VU7

This does not apply to Amy Alkon's blog, okay? She's not generating (much) wealth with it... And her work on it, which she presumably finds self-improving, has indisputably enriched the lives of others more than her own. She can ban anyone she wants, and she can erase any comments (or her own blog posts) any time she wants. It's hers.
But the inane account suspensions and deletions at enterprises like Twitter and Facebook, the errors of which are often blamed on automation under continuing refinement, deserve to be challenged in this straightforward way: The users who made these guys rich "tilled the soil, sowed the seeds."

Great! So what's the range?
Crid at July 14, 2019 2:35 AM
HBR asks an interesting question, but I tire of seeing the question asked in men-women terms, as if hiring only women to be managers would solve all our problems.
I've worked for men and women and found both sexes to house the incompetent, narcissistic, histrionic, and psychopathic. I've had good managers of both sexes, and bad ones too.
So, let's stop looking at management skill as a gender-driven skill and start looking for the traits, present in either sex, that consistently demonstrate managerial success.
Also, I object to calling managers (and politicians) "leaders." Authority provided by a rank or position you've attained backed by legal power is not the same as authority provided by people being willing to follow you because they choose to.

British old lady, warbling melodically through bad teeth.
I especially love the milliseconds of hesitation between her words "free" and "speech," and the flickering side-eye thereafter: She understands perfectly well but a little late that the locution is a risk... It calls to mind The Colonies, a boisterous and quarrelsome one in particular, and might distract her audience from their own proud-if-wobbling stature and fortitude in such matters.

So, this was a cartoon. A few days ago when it first appeared, I felt nagging doubts about calipers which could hold a ball so tightly without crushing it, let alone send it over the lane without damaging the back wall.

And this one is the finest comedy from the 2019 internet to date. We've been seeing these machines harshly beaten for so long that the Nazi-prison-guard violence is gloriously sarcastic. 'Now call it names! Sexually abuse it! Find its little sister!' It's like Airplane.

Hey, Crid - could you elaborate on the "clearinghouse" jab a little?
I lost track.
And, to me, Wall Street and its ilk, with its restrictions on computerized trading, the Federal Reserve... both act as "formal" institutions deciding what monetary policy should be. The informal phenomenon of market inertia acts as another.
Doesn't any society need a place to gather to decide how trade works?
Won't this also be advisable for digital currency?
Radwaste at July 14, 2019 4:50 PM
> I lost track.
Maintaining a complete index of the idiocies here would be Sisyphean: Don't beat yourself up about it.
A "centralized clearinghouse" is what you get when an internet newbie tries, in the most transparently obvious & needful way possible, to feign sophisticated understanding of realms and systems for which he has zero principled appreciation, as if to impress chicks:
Heh.
> Doesn't any society need
> a place to gather to decide
> how trade works?
No:
> Won't this also be advisable
> for digital currency?
No.
Well, "digital currency" presumably includes credit cards and almost every other kind of contemporary banking transaction, all built on principles that been corrupted by politics in unspeakable ways.
But perhaps you were inquiring about cryptocurrencies, of which only one deserves your serious consideration: Bitcoin. In which case, the answer to your question is—
Crid at July 14, 2019 5:46 PM
No.
Such a conventicle is impossible anyway… Unless you're trying to stage a 51% attack, and good luck. (Things are hotting up again, and the mining difficulty went up 14% last week, to 9 trillion.)
Bensy-buns didn't do the reading and you probably won't either, but you should at least watch the cartoon.
Then fallow Saifedean Ammous on Twitter, and he'll show you the econ & politics.
Crid at July 14, 2019 5:47 PM
It is sad how you have to lie to prove your point Crid. And three lies in a row at that.
I'll always remember how Crid is opposed to basic accounting, standard financial terminology, cost of living calculators, among many others. But when you gotta troll I guess you gotta troll. Oh well.
Ben at July 14, 2019 8:21 PM
Accusations, and yet you offer no cites.
How about that? Homework, right?
Crid at July 14, 2019 8:52 PM
Crid and Ben going after each other?
No matter who loses, I win.
Patrick at July 14, 2019 9:19 PM
Ahh, now Crid needs cites to prove he is lying. Not surprising considering he has only a passing connection with the truth.
When did I ever claim I make $165k? What more homework do I need to do when you are trolling right now? How many times do I need to cite Crid asking 'Have you ever kissed a girl?' or some other equally pointless and juvenile jab to prove he is a troll?
I remember when Crid said it was better for kids to be killed than have to live with their fathers after a divorce. At least he had the gall to be embarrassed after he wrote that one.
Ben at July 15, 2019 7:59 AM
You didn't; you said you couldn't live on that in Dallas, which [1.] made me think you'd tried and [2.] was incredibly tone-deaf.
> I remember when Crid said it

No you don't. (It's preposterous.) Otherwise you'd have posted a cite.
I remember that time Ben said retarded children should be diced and served in pies.
It struck me as a little harsh!

"I remember that time Ben said retarded children should be diced and served in pies."
You mean they shouldn't? Damn, I bought all those ingredients for nothing.
Cousin Dave at July 15, 2019 11:15 AM
Citation please Crid. Because you are lying.
I said if you live in Dallas (I don't) and make $90k per year then you need to make $165k per year in LA to have the same lifestyle. At which point you became apoplectic over the accounting industry.
I'm afraid you did say that about divorced men getting custody Crid. I said that maybe you should flip a coin to decide which parent got the kids (assuming no credible evidence of abuse and such). You responded about how that was no different than chopping kids in half. I pointed out how stupid what you said was and you were reasonably embarrassed. Such is life. That isn't what you intended to write and I understood that. What confuses me is I've said plenty of bone headed things, yet you need to lie in order to make digs at me. It is like how people like to lie about politicians they don't like. Why lie? There are plenty of true things to go after, but for some reason the lie is preferred.
You are right Patrick. And I congratulate you on your winning. There is no way I can see to 'win' this situation. It doesn't matter if I pull quotes and prove Crid wrong. A few weeks from now he will be spouting the same discredited lies. So what is the point? I guess I get the cold comfort of knowing I'll always have a home in Crid's head. But it is dark and icky in there. I prefer my current home.
Ben at July 15, 2019 1:37 PM
> you did say that
Where?
Crid at July 15, 2019 3:01 PM
I'm not going to dig it up for you Crid. It was years ago. So what if I gave you the cite? In a few weeks you are going to be back with the same tired and discredited digs. It changes nothing. You said something stupid once upon a time. Oh no, you are human. To your credit when it was pointed out what you had written you fessed up to things not coming out as you wanted and acted classy.
Ben at July 15, 2019 3:46 PM
> I'm not going to dig
> it up for you
We know.
Crid at July 15, 2019 8:52 PM
Which is hilarious Crid. Because you forced me to do that homework. And I've done it over and over and over again. And so what? To what effect? Yes you are a troll. You troll out regularly just like you are here. And it doesn't matter. As I said you don't change. Why spend the effort? It doesn't matter. You will keep coming up with the same old lies and same old juvenile taunts. Six months from now you will still be trotting out $165k. That it is a lie doesn't matter to you.
What would I get if I actually dug the cite up for you Crid? Are you going to pay for my time and effort? Is it only the joy of proving you wrong? I gotta say I have far more important thing to do with my life than that Crid.
Ben at July 16, 2019 8:52 AM
> over and over again
not once.
Crid at July 16, 2019 5:25 PM
Well that clearly ends it. Clearly Crid isn't a lying troll. Clearly he has never asked pointlessly 'Have you ever kissed a girl?' Nope. Nothing to see here.
You need to stop licking the toads Crid. This level of delusional isn't covered by the wacky weed. Let us know once you've returned to planet Earth.
