Is Trump's "Go Back" Tweet The Worst Error Of His Presidency?
"Go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came," Trump sneered about the four Democratic congresswomen.
Um, the Bronx? (In the case of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.)
....and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don't they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how....
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 14, 2019
Rob Quinn writes at Newser that few conservatives are defending Trump -- which isn't to say Republicans are making more than the sound of silence:
With a tweet widely denounced as racist, President Trump has apparently managed to do what Nancy Pelosi was struggling to accomplish--unite the squabbling Democratic caucus. Pelosi and other Democratic lawmakers were among those slamming Trump for his remark that four progressive Democratic congresswomen should "go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came." Trump was also heavily criticized by Democratic 2020 contenders over the remark, and several right-wing commentators. Trump's many critics note that the four congresswomen he is believed to have been talking about, Reps. Ayanna Pressley, Rashida Tlaib, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Ilhan Omar, are all US citizens and all but Omar were born in the US.
Could this be the thing that finally puts some Trump supporters over the edge, or is there really no amount of ugliness ("grab 'em by the pussy!") that will lead Trump supporters to say "Whoops, maybe he doesn't quite fit with our evangelical Christian values"? Etcetera.
Is part of the problem that there's no real challenger that Trump supporters could see replacing him?

They're not even grateful for us giving them a standard of living they have proven themselves incapable of producing on their own.
Thank god Trump finally said it.
Can you imagine choosing to live in China and then complaining about how much the Chinese people suck? Would the Chinese be half as patient with such ingrates as White Americans have been?
And all this coming from a fellow Jew!!! Israel works very hard to keep a Jewish ethnic majority and is not keen on taking in refugees or immigrants. And yet so many Jews, like Amy, shame Americans for wanting to do the same.

But they're apparently not moving into Venice, or Amy might be singing a different tune. It's said by Christians that God sometimes uses imperfect vessels to serve his purpose. The times do not call for a Mitt Romney or a Billy Graham. We have the president we need, and he's doing a great job. He crushed 15 of the best the GOP had to offer back in 2016, so, yeah, others in the GOP are understandably wary of tangling with him. Employment is up, the Norks have ceased making threats, the relationship with the Chinese is being reset, and he's trying to do something about the illegals, which is a first for recent presidents, who only knew how to give amnesties.
I look forward to voting for him next fall early and often.
roadgeek at July 16, 2019 4:48 AM
And no, his tweets over the weekend were a masterstroke. He drove The Squad into defending themselves in a nationally-televised press conference, which turned into a disaster, and he forced Pelosi into defending The Squad, who are indefensible for many Americans. The Squad handed the GOP many, many TV commercials over the weekend. Told my wife this morning on the way to work that people, such as Pelosi, who underestimate his intelligence, are making a grave mistake. He rose to the top in one of the most competitive political environments in the world, and made it look easy. He may be unread and uncouth, but he's what the heartland wants. Amy misses the point in wondering if this incident that drives Trump supporters over the edge; Amy lives in Venice, California, which is a very, very, very long way from Lufkin, Texas, Youngstown, OH, and Topeka, KS; almost all the people in those flyover places think Trump is doing an excellent job, and they vote. It's the only weapon that have to fight back with, and they use it. Amy would do well to leave Venice and go out into the heartland and talk to the residents of the flyover states and ask why they voted for Trump the first time, and why they're going to vote for him again. Amy might be surprised, and she might learn something. Amy should familiarize herself with the writing of Salena Zito, a reporter who's already done this. She, along with Scott Adams, were among the very first to predict a Trump victory. Amy may dislike Trump, she may not approve of how he conducts himself, but she shows a complete lack of understanding of the biggest concept of all: his base simply does not care about his behavior. They want results, and he's delivering. Sorry, Amy, I enjoy reading your work. You're very bright and perceptive, but you betray a total lack of understanding of this topic, and you want gain that understanding sitting in Venice. Next time, instead of Paris, France, how about you visit Paris, Texas? Trump carried Lamar County overwhelmingly last time, and he will again next year. If you asked the resident of Paris and Lamar County why, they'd certainly tell you.

Yes, Trump's statement was crass. And you know what? I don't give a flying fuck. We've got people in Congress, who have sworn an oath to uphold the Constitution, who very clearly don't like anything about America and don't agree with any American values, and yet they presume to lecture us about same. Between her shady finances and her bigamous marriages-of-convenience, Ihlan Omar should never have been admitted to the United States in the first place, much less elected to Congress.
Do not forget that the Left's goal is absolute power, and they have been working the long march for decades. The Constitution is not a suicide pact. When attacked by people who see the values of Western civilization as weaknesses to be exploited, we have no choice but to fight back in kind, if we want modern civilization to survive.

There are plenty of Trump supporters who are not Evangelical Christians, or for that matter Christians of any sort.
And even among those who *are* Evangelical Christians, political motivations are not as simple as some stereotypical Church Lady type. Many of them, like many other Americans, are deeply concerned about the endless Dem assaults on both freedom of speech and on American social cohesion.

Trump's generally reactive in his tweets, but he is presented as waking up and deciding to go attack somebody for kicks.
On Saturday, Rep. Omar declared herself more American than anyone born here, because she wants to turn America into the utopia she was promised when she was a child back in Somalia.

“And, I believe as an immigrant, I probably love this country more than anyone that is naturally born.”
“I saw panhandlers on the side of the streets, there being trash everywhere, and graffiti on the side of the walls,” she recalled on a podcast last December. “I remember turning to my father and saying, ‘Well, this doesn’t look like the America you promised!'”
They used to say 15 years ago we were headed to a national divorce. We're headed to a war once the federal larder is fully and completely empty. Running 40% deficits all century is unsustainable, and, when that comes, there will be a lot of justification of bad actions by whomever is specifically benefited - whoever has been declared the angel and whoever has been declared the demon.

Isab at July 16, 2019 7:16 AM
I've read several articles saying this was a calculated political move by Trump, driving Pelosi and "The Squad" into each other's arms just as the left-moderate democrats were successfully distancing themselves from the more extreme Omar, Tlaib, Cortez, et al.
While the members of "The Squad" have high name recognition, they also have basement-level approval ratings - Omar's hovers at around 9%. Tying Pelosi and the Democrats to that anchor seems to be Trump's goal.
Flipping the House in the 2018 midterms was as much a product of Republican voter anger at Ryan and company as it was the Democrats putting moderate rhetoric like "put country ahead of party" in the mouths of their House candidates and running them to the middle. Pelosi has experience in forcing reluctant moderate Democrats to vote her way - Obamacare was her masterclass in that.
Trump, in defending Pelosi against "The Squad" one moment and, in the next, tying every Democrat to "The Squad" and their fanatical left-wing politics is trying to flip the House back. Mitch McConnell began the process with calling for a "Green New Deal" floor vote in the Senate. Dan Crenshaw is keeping up the process with his Twitter snark on AOC. As long as Republicans keep "The Squad" in the news, then it becomes the face of the Democratic Party and its platform becomes the Party's.
In addition, keeping the hard left "Squad" in the news emboldens AOC's Chief of Staff, Saikat Chakrabarti. Chakrabarti is the head of a political PAC, Justice Democrats, that is running hard left Democrats to challenge moderate Democrats in "safe" Democrat district primaries, further dividing the party and tying it to "The Squad's" hard left policies.

Just reading what you presented the comment isn't racist. And as IRA says from a political angle this works very well for Trump. Now the Democrat candidates will have to push even further left costing them moderate votes. All in all a victory.

The company grew huge. When he died, my grandmother sold his share of the company for pennies on the dollar. We coulda been rich! Thanks Grams.

"Um, the Bronx?" It's not a country, but his description seems accurate enough: "[It's] government [is] a complete and total catastrophe."
Trump apparently lacks a filter between his mind and his mouth - whatever he's thinking at the moment is going to come tumbling out, with no pause to check the facts or reasoning, and apparently no calculations as to the political effect. If that's true, it makes him a buffoon and a frequent liar, but yet more honest overall than the politician who is weighing every word.
Or perhaps he's a genius at acting, giving this impression of an unfiltered stream of consciousness, while actually tweeting carefully-considered insults. The only evidence for that is how well his emissions play in the red and purple states. It doesn't matter whether he loses CA by 1 million, 3 million, or 10 million votes - he'd still lose to a dead child molester if that person were a Democrat. He'd lose among the mostly black residents of Detroit. But that sort of argument wins votes with Michigan's blue-collar white voters, even though they usually tilt Democrat. There are more of them than the blacks, and when he won Michigan by only about 10,000 votes, he won all of Michigan's electoral votes.

That's the thing. Wedge politics seems to be the order of the day right now. The thing is, the Democrats keep driving their wedges in the wrong place, and they don't realize (or don't care) that they are making that mistake. All Trump has to do is drive his wedges a little bit to the right, and he wins.
Privately, a lot of people will be effected by Trump's comments a lot more than they are willing to admit, even after (especially after) considering the source. Nobody likes an ungrateful outsider -- the guy who comes to town, enjoys the town's charms while insulting all the townspeople, proceeds to turn the place upside down and break everything, and then when things go to hell, he blames the townspeople for not giving him enough cooperation.

The Tea Party, or at least some parts of it, learned its lesson. It learned that nearly all of what it had been taught about American politics was, in the post-modern era, a lie. The Tea Party said "No more mister nice guy". It took a bit of time, but Trump flows directly from that.

Like I said before, show me an actual CONSERVATIVE primary candidate who doesn't seem to look down his nose at regular Americans, and you could see me switch support.
I still cannot blame Trump for saying what he said, in the end. These people seem to truly hate our country and will hopefully be tossed out of their seats in 2020. And if Tlaib or Omar should become President, Amy and other women would be wise to either procure firearms or learn to wear the hijab.

You live in Venice beach. Diversity is great for you because you get the best performing minority outliers in the affluent parts of the LA area.
For you diversity means getting to meet a cool Latina and Asian chick in your Yoga class and mojitos/boozey brunches with a hip gay guy.
For most Americans diversity means not being able to have kids because the local school system has Compton like conditions and they can't afford private school. Or not being able to get a living wage because immigration has increased the supply of labor and lowered wages.
And when all this diversity turns America into a third world country you can always hightail it to Israel. Where does the average American go?
You'll excuse me if I don't want to hear any lectures from you about the glories of diversity or how "ugly" Trump's tweet is.

The text that follows deserves wide and repeated redistribution, anywhere a semi- or fully-thoughtful anti-gunner can be found and cornered long enough to read it. Chip Elliott, author of a novel entitled Tomorrow Come Sunrise, published in 1970, wrote the below letter in response to an April 1981 article in Esquire Magazine entitled "Fifty Million Handguns." It so impressed the editors that it was published in the September 1981 issue as the cover story. Mr. Elliot's comments are just as relevant to the gun issue as they were the day they were written — and his effervescent authenticity is indeed deeply appreciated. Esquire Magazine did a great service by running this letter — do your part by making sure someone else reads it.

Judy Woodruff:
"And, Lisa, you were also telling me — we were talking just a few minutes ago — that kind of underlying all this, you're seeing really a complicated reaction to what's happening."
Lisa Desjardins:
"This is what I want to get to, because, at the Capitol, it's frustrating. We're seeing this bouncing ball.
"We're seeing this atmosphere of accusations right now. But it's so important to get to the greater meaning, because, as neither side seems politically motivated to try and resolve this conversation about race, I'm also concerned, Judy, that maybe they're not equipped.
"And that's because these two sides, as you talk to them behind closed doors, they define racism differently. Republicans are using kind of an earlier definition of race, in which the intention of the person is what's critical.
"Democrats are talking more and more about what the effect of racism is. Are people affected by it? Are their lives changed?
"And, of course, Democrats have more people of color. It's not an accident that the definition is evolving, because people of color have more power.
"One really quick example, I talked to John Thune, a Republican. I asked him, is there anything you would feel comfortable calling racism? He had to pause, and he couldn't say that there was.
"Democrats are not comfortable in how to bring white — white Americans into the conversation about race. Republicans are not comfortable talking about racism at all. And they are far apart on a very important conversation."

Trump who said, "Why don't they go back..." (but has no intention to force anyone)? and "Grab 'em by the pussy!" (but probably didn't, at least not to anyone who didn't let him)
Or politicians who...
-actually "grab 'em by the..." or worse,
-think taxes and government spending are never high enough,
-call for a single-payer (government controlled) healthcare system like the pathetic systems they have in Canada and the UK,
-want highly restrictive anti-gun laws like Mexico (only government and criminals armed, with 33,341 murders in 2018 compared to about 16,000 in the U.S.),
-oppose any restriction on the flow of undocumented immigrants from Mexico to the U.S.,
-want no citizenship question on the census (how many more seats in Congress and electors on the Electoral College will California have if there's no distinction between citizens and non citizens?),
-want men(/boys) who claim to be women(/girls) to have free access to women's(/girls') locker rooms, showers, bathrooms and sports,
-want a Green New Deal...
A lot of politicians who talk nice want to use the police, guns, courts and jails of the government - i.e. force and violence - to do a lot of really bad things.
"Why don't they go back..." and "Grab 'em by the pussy!" are just words.
