Whatever You Do, Do Not Ask Students To Think!
Imagine an intellectually engaging response: Retaining a controversial mural and adding a plaque to explain the issues surrounding it.
No, can't be asking students to think!
The story, by Samantha Maldonado at the AP:
San Francisco will spend up to $600,000 to paint over historical artwork at a public school depicting the life of George Washington, a mural once seen as educational and innovative but now criticized as racist and degrading for its depiction of black and Native American people. The "Life of Washington" was painted by Victor Arnautoff, one of the foremost muralists in the San Francisco area during the Depression. The San Francisco School Board's decision to paint over the 83-year-old mural is prompting some to worry that other artwork from the so-called New Deal era could face a similar fate because of changing sensitivities.
In addition to depicting Washington as a soldier, surveyor and statesman, the 13-panel, 1,600-sqaure foot mural at George Washington High School contains images of white pioneers standing over the body of a Native American and slaves working at Washington's Mount Vernon estate in Virginia.
The board's decision last week comes at a time when the legacies of Washington and other historical figures who owned slaves are being re-examined. Some cities have changed the names of streets and buildings named after slave owners.
Richard Walker, a professor emeritus of geography at the University of California, Berkeley and director of the history project, Living New Deal, said the Washington mural is meant to show the "uncomfortable facts" about America's first president. For that, it was among many New Deal works of art considered radical when created.
...Arnautoff, a Russian-born communist and social critic, was hired with Federal Art Project funds as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, a series of government programs meant to help lift the country out of the Great Depression of the 1930s.
Also, what's with repainting (and destroying a piece of art work) costing $600K? I'd do it for just $60K! Or, um, $6K. Or, um, $600. Exercise!

Sigh. It's not about thinking or not thinking. Don't you get it? Other races don't like white people so they want to attack white people's history. This is racial hatred against whites; it has nothing to do with students not being able to grasp the nuances of history or snowflakes being triggered by George Washington.
White people should not appologize for their history. So I HATE your idea of compromising by adding a plaque. If I choose to live in China do you think the Chinese will listen to me if I complain that their art of history is offensive to a non-Chinese? NO!!!
How about this; instant deportation for any non-white who attacks white people and their culture. Like remember that Sarah Jeong women who got a job writing for the NYT after hundreds of racist tweets against whites? She should be sent back to South Korea on the double.
Jewish Cat at July 4, 2019 10:18 PM
Jewish Cat, that's a horrible and horribly unworkable suggestion that I hope you were making only in jest.
First: it assumes the US is a whites-only nation; and that any other race is here only at the pleasure of whites; that non-whites had no hand in building and defending this great nation and, thus, no legitimate stake in it.
Second: it grants special legal status to members one race only, whites. In addition, it forces non-whites to live in fear of a police state monitoring their every word and action.
Third: it leaves mixed race people in the lurch, both legally and deportation-wise. What does this whites-only nation of yours do with someone who's half Korean and half Caucasian? Do we deport half of a person? Or do we go back to the one-drop nonsense of Jim Crow and Apartheid?
Third and a half: to which African country to we exile black people? African slaves readily mixed tribes and cultures over here, so that it is difficult to say someone is distinctly South African, Botswanan, Nigerian, et al.
Fourth: most non-white folks have been here for several generations and do not have any foothold in the auld sod. Exiling them to their race's county or continent of origin is exiling them to a strange land.
Fifth: while founded on European Enlightenment ideals of individual freedoms over collective security, the US has, until only very recently, seen itself as a melting pot, incorporating aspects of the cultures of those who come here.
Sixth: such an idea is only worthy of those race-hate mongers (on both sides) who seek to divide us, not to unite us.
Conan the Grammarian at July 5, 2019 5:28 AM
From the article: "Most of the $600,000 earmarked for the project will go toward a required environmental review and to cover expected legal challenges."
I was wondering about that.
Old RPM Daddy (OldRPMDaddy at GMail dot com) at July 5, 2019 6:10 AM
I'm absolutely serious Conan.
For most of it's history America was a majority white nation. It was built mostly, though not exclusivly, by whites If I move to Japan it is only natural for me to respect the Japanese culture and defer to the Japenese people. American whites should demand the same deference and respect.
If non-whites don't like this they are free to leave.
Whites are the only people in human history to have willingly let other races move into their lands in large numbers. There is no gratitude for this. Instead they are constantly attacked as racist. As the white popluation shrinks these anti white sentiments turn more and more violent.
It's a cruel world. So I don't care about being nice.
I really don't like you Conan. You are the Platonic form of a cuckservative. The sort of person who cheers when Israel defends it's borders with deadly force but has a thousand reasons why deporting millions of illegal immigrants from America is immoral. The sort of man who adopts a black child just to prove he is not racist. The sort of person who wants to make sure the right stays civil as the left gets increasingly violent.
You Conan are the type of man who would rather die with his principles then fight and live. That is to say you're a worm, not a man.
Jewish Cat at July 5, 2019 6:22 AM
I don't see where any students were quoted in the article. Or even any protest by students. I did see one line about some students in the 1960s complaining about the obvious racist nature of the painting, but no one more recent. Instead I saw school board members, teachers, and former students from the 1970s mentioned.
My main takeaway was administrators are tired of looking at this old painting and are happy to spend money to get something new. And perhaps help their friends get some cash too.
Ben at July 5, 2019 6:45 AM
I'd need to crunch the numbers, but I'd wager a larger percentage of black Americans than white have ancestors who were around in Colonial times. There were massive immigration waves in the late 1800s.
NicoleK at July 5, 2019 6:52 AM
The part you are missing JC is various minority groups aren't your enemy on this issue. It is left wing white groups. Who complains and tried to get people fired when an anglo wears traditionally Japanese clothing? It isn't the Japanese or even the Americans of Japanese decent. It is anglos with an unhealthy helping of white guilt. The push to ban the Redskin's name was done by anglos. The same with most of these issues.
Deport all the people you want with skin tones you don't approve of and you won't change a single thing.

Bullshit. This is part of a recent trend to tear down white monuments. It started with Confederate monuments and moved on to the founders, who were slave owners after all.
Morever no one would dare paint over a painting of MLK or Harriet Tubman no matter how ugly or old it it was.
And what makes your comment especially stupid is that a little googling ant you can cearly find that the people pushing for this explicetly say they want the mural gone because it's racist.
Your comment is so stupid you have to be lying. Why are you lying Ben?

NO.
The main drivers of organized anti white ideologies look white and wear tiny hats, but they are not white. Most whites who adopt these anti white views ultimetly picked it up from these folks with the tiny hats.
Humans are naturally tribal. Black people, Latinos, and Muslims are much more naitonalistic then whites and naturally hostile to outside groups. Even without the influence of the small hats there would be tensions between them and whites. Probalbly better to have sperate homelands.
Jewish Cat at July 5, 2019 7:03 AM
You know, I really don't care what you think of me, JC.
You strike me as the kind of racist who hides his racism behind high-sounding principles. No matter the flourish, it's still racism and it's still ugly. You think that, because you're Jewish, your racism isn't racism.
Illegal immigration is still breaking the law. I've opposed open borders and will continue to do so. I'm opposed to blanket amnesty. We tried it under Reagan and it got us nowhere. I've advocated fixing the immigration system so it's less cumbersome and more straightforward, bringing in skilled immigrants who want to assimilate, and not third world peasants who can't function in and contribute to a first world digital economy.
Nations, JC, need growing populations to keep their economies vibrant. The US does not have the birthrate to do that organically, so it needs immigration. However, of all nations in the world, only the US has traditionally set up its immigration system to assimilate immigrants - or it used to.
The biggest problem we have now is identity politics, which eschews assimilation in favor of isolation and segregation by groups. I'm not opposed to other races or cultures moving here and settling in; as long as they assimilate. I am opposed to the establishment of cultural enclaves in opposition to the established American culture, European-centric though it may be. You want Sharia? Then stay in the Middle East.
And I'm opposed to the idea that African-Americans have a separate culture. White liberals and so-called black culturalists have chosen ghetto culture and labeled it universal black culture; a culture that eschews education, work ethic, and respect for the law. And they're taking their race down with them. Thomas Sowell identified it as "redneck culture" and called its African-American adherents, urban or rural, "black rednecks."
And, yes JC, I support Israel defending itself; even watched Raid on Entebbe last night, a nice feel-good Fourth of July movie.
As for the violent left, I don't think you'll find in my posts plenty of condemnation of the violence fomented by Antifa, BLM, OWS, and their ilk.
However, counter-violence and brawling in the streets is not the answer - that's what led to the Nazi takeover of Germany, violent street brawls between the Communists and the National Socialists. The Nazis promised to end the violence in the streets, violence they had a hand in creating. The Germans were so tired of the violence that they 37% of them voted National Socialist to reestablish order.
And that, JC, is the goal of Antifa, BLM, OWS, and their ilk. To bring about street violence that will lead to their ascendance to power. So, go ahead, play into their hands and we'll see what horrors await us when they're in charge.
And "cuckservative?" Until you understand the word you're trying to imply, cuckold, please stop pormanteau-ing it into what you think is an insult, but really only serves to highlight your own ignorance.
Now, go forth and multiply, JC. Only not in those words.
Conan the Grammarian at July 5, 2019 7:23 AM

Conan the Grammarian at July 5, 2019 7:27 AM
I'm actually opposed to the plaque idea. Let the students view the mural and form their own impressions. Art does not need an explanatory plaque.
The painting was done by an anti-American communist artist. That it condemns slavery and Manifest Destiny is obvious to all but the most hate-blinded race-baiter.
And SFUSD spending $800,000 to paint over it? Who are they hiring to do the painting, Jeremy Mann? Twenty gallons of paint and some roller brushes should do the trick. Students on detention could do the work.
Apparently, The City has enough money to paint over a historic mural and to enforce an anti-vaping ordinance, but not enough to stop people shooting heroin in the streets or taking dumps in shop doorways?
Out-of-control homeless street people are estimated to cost San Francisco over $14 million in tourism money each year. To which issue do you think The City should apply that $800,000?
Conan the Grammarian at July 5, 2019 7:46 AM
Ya Conan, I was right about you. I could have guessed your views without being told.
Identity politics is not a plague it is a natural thing for humans. In the past America was mostly white so identity politics was not present, but as soon as other races arrived in large enough numbers identity politics became inevitable.
Most black people don't like whites. The best illustration of this is when Colin Kapernick said the original American flag was racist. Black people hate white people and their traditions. If pakistan and India split why can't white and black America? If white and black america was a marriage it should have ended in divorce years ago.
You really are a cuckservative. Your quoting Thomas Sowel, the most white presenting outlier of a black man to ever live, only to signal how not racist you are. You think if a black person says something it carries more weight don't you?
Now run along little cuck and find a black man. Then tell him how much you love MLK and give him a lecture on liberarian economics. Who knows maybe you could inspire the next Thomas Sowel.
Jewish Cat at July 5, 2019 7:56 AM
You really are proud of your own hatred and ignorance, aren't you.
Identity politics in American society is not new. It has always been present in some form. Irish, Jews, Italians, and other white immigrants faced their own versions of identity politics. Why do you think there are ethnic enclaves in so many American cities?
You want this all to be about race, about white vs. everyone else, but it's never been solely about race. You're right in that humans tend to be tribal. That was the point of the US Constitution, to blend the tribes into a coherent nation.
Before race, religion was often the cause of violent tribalism, even in colonial America. Maryland was founded as a haven for Catholics. Massachusetts and Connecticut were strictly Puritan. North Carolina, though Anglican, had a large Lutheran population. Pennsylvania leaned Quaker. Rhode Island was founded as a secular protest to Puritan New England. Georgia was full of convicts.
Puritan mobs attacked Baptists in the colonial period, often jailing or beating adherents. Catholic Maryland's assembly was taken over by Puritans, who repealed its religious tolerance laws. Pennsylvania's Quakers condemned slavery (BTW, Colin, Betsy Ross was a Quaker, as was Richard Nixon.).
All this violence and hatred was among white people, not racial.
By limiting the federal government's ability to divide the people along the major fault lines of that era - religion - the Founding Fathers attempted to meld a nation. And it worked for 200+ years. Now, you and your ilk - which includes Antifa, BLM, etc. - want to divide it by race, or anything else you can find.
As for quoting Sowell, no signal intended. Just citing his apt observation on the subject; that the so-called black culture embraced by activists today is ghetto culture, a spin-off of redneck culture, carried by blacks from the South to the North in the '30s.
I'll try to quote only white people from here on in - in deference to your delicate racial sensibilities.
And, JC, respect for education, laws, manners, property, et al is not just a "white thing."
That not all blacks embrace ghetto culture should tell you that they're not the monolithic tribe you imagine them to be. Nor are whites. That is, if you can open your eyes enough to see.
And, JC, you can throw all the invented insults you want my way.
Conan the Grammarian at July 5, 2019 8:51 AM

No you did intend the signal. It's no coincidence that a lot of boomer conservatives always quote Sowell. Also black dysfunction in the U.S. has nothing to do with redneck culture. I mean why do black communities in Haiti and Africa also have high levels of violence and low levels of academic achivement? Did they also pick up redneck culture? Obviously not.
I resent your asseration that black problems are ultimeatly the fault of white rednecks.
I'm not suprisied this idea comes from Thomas Sowell. He is a mediocre intellect. The only reason people care about what he has to say is that he is black. Sort of like how Neil DeGrasse Tyson is paraded everywhere even though there are thousands of more accomplished white physicists. You would call this the bigotry of low expectations.
That's what gives your game away Conan. If Thomas Sowell was white you wouldn't quote him because his mediocare opinions would not be of interest to anyone. But you go out of your way to quote this uninteresting black man simply to signal that you are not racist.
Jewish Cat at July 5, 2019 9:21 AM

Is Jewish Cat related to Snoopy? It was nice not having a raging racist in here for awhile.
Abersouth at July 5, 2019 12:14 PM
Pakistan and India split along a religious divide - Hindu vs. Muslim - not a racial one. And it was not a peaceful split. They're still arguing over the Kashmir region and even went to war over the Bangladeshi Secession.
If white and black America split - even with a desire to do it peacefully - who gets what? Who gets Halle Berry? Who gets Kamala Harris? Who gets Rachel Dolezal?
You assume I'm saying a sub-culture with high levels of violence and a general disdain for education is strictly American redneck. Redneck is an American variation of peasant culture and that's a worldwide thing. We just don't call them peasants here.
How do you think people like Lenin, Hitler, Mao, Mussolini, Pol Pot, Chavez, Castro, et al were able to take power? They did it through popular ignorance and resentment.
African countries got most of their modern problems from tribal rivalries for land and food - e.g., Hutu vs. Tutsi, Xhosa vs. Zulu, etc. These rivalries were not accounted for in European divisions of territory. Later, when lots of money was to be had from extracting natural resources from the land, these resentments went beyond simply land and food and became rivalries for wealth and power. Throw in Islam and religious strife and you have modern Africa, a seething pot of resentful and angry peasants.
Europeans long ago supplanted their own tribal rivalries with religious ones, so age-old tribal rivalries like Saxon vs. Norman were relegated to literature and folklore. The Roman Empire and Catholic Church provided Europe with a common language and culture - until the Protestant Reformation exacerbated developing rivalries and conflicts.
If societal disfunction is strictly a black thing, why do Central American and Balkan communities have similar problems with violence and disfunction? How is majority-black Botswana one of the least corrupt countries in the world? Why are Spain and Italy still ranked fairly high on the index of corrupt nations, not Africa-in-toto high, but higher than Botswana?
Of course! You've nailed it! No way anyone could agree with Sowell except to virtue signal. No way he could come up with an interesting theory on his own. Because he's black, that means that he only has a mediocre intellect. Any success he has can be ascribed solely to white people virtue signaling. By God, you've cracked the code!
I'll agree with you on DeGrasse Tyson being a mediocre intellect. He gets by on telegenic looks, personality, low expectations, and having knowledge of a subject most people find esoteric.
Whenever he ventures off the astrophysics reservation, however, he reveals an incurious mind and less-than-stellar thought processes; sometimes even when he stays on the reservation. David Burge (Iowahawk) once called him "America's favorite planetarium gift shop manager."
Or, perhaps I'm still upset about that whole Pluto thing.
JC, you couch your racial animosity in pseudo-intellectual dressing and imagine yourself the smartest guy in the room, the guy who sees what others refuse to. That way, you don't have to face yourself as a drooling Hollywood stereotype, but can imagine yourself as a deep thinker misunderstood by a society so anxious to be considered open-minded that its brains long ago fell out.

This is the equivalent of the Taliban blowing up the statues of Buddha, with hair-trigger sensitive SJW as the Taliban. Hopefully there will be a court challenge to destroying a historical work of art.
Novathecat at July 5, 2019 3:59 PM
I'd argue that the Taliban's destruction of the Bamyan Buddhas was, to some degree, worse as it destroyed items of an archaeological interest as well as a religious and cultural one. However, I'd agree that the totalitarian instinct that driving both acts of destruction is the same.
