On Monday, presidential candidate Bernie Sanders announced a new proposal to cancel all student loan debt and to fund free four-year public and community colleges. Altogether, the proposal would cost $2.2 trillion over 10 years — making rival candidate Elizabeth Warren’s radical $1.25 trillion over 10 years loan forgiveness plan look relatively moderate.

As appealing as it might sound, though, Sanders’ proposal is a slap in the face for college graduates like me who had planned ahead, compromised on our choices and struggled in order to limit our student loan debt. Not to mention, it's just one massive handout to the wealthy that fails to address the root of the college affordability crisis

In 2016 I was publishing stories in mainstream media that, while not overtly in support of either side, refused to mindlessly regurgitate the lies media was telling about Trump supporters. I was curious about them, not hateful. Activists and media personalities picked up on this. Sensing I might have some shameful, hidden right-wing views, they swarmed, calling for a boycott of the magazine I worked for, for me to be fired, and sent death threats.

I saw this happen to other journalists. They’d immediately cave, issue a disingenuous apology and self-flagellate for a few days. They’re probably still on a list somewhere. But I never did, and the harassment never fully ended until, months later, I finally dropped a nuke of a story in which I condemned the left completely and came out as a conservative. To my surprise, the mob disappeared. Progressive bullies were silent, nowhere to be found. Suddenly I wasn’t a Nazi who needed to confess or die, but just worthy of an occasional eyeroll emoji from a left-wing blogger.

In truth, these are good for anyone in a pickle.

As a young wingman in a single-seat fighter, I learned - and confirmed - five good lessons that I believe are applicable for any airframe and pilot:

1. Always maintain your composure and accomplish each phase of flight or emergency procedures one step at a time.

2. Take your time and maintain control of your aircraft before digging into a checklist.

3. Use the resources around you to back up your diagnosis and decisions. This will allow you to focus on the highest priority tasks...

4. Checklist management is critical, especially in a single-seat, single-engine aircraft with hundreds of different checklists...

5. Once you are on final and prepared to land, focus on making a good approach and landing a bad aircraft, as to not make a bad situation worse...

Amazing how useful wealth envy is. This ignores the enormous hit any college degree would take w/r/t credibility, already deflating due to grade inflation.

I can point you to many engineers who apparently never cracked a book on classical physics or materials tech, and they are a liability, not just a burden on co-workers.
