“My conscience is just demanding that I try to create some sort of higher bar for owner-opposed designations,” Black told Denverite, adding that the Tom’s Diner episode “really hit home for me.”
Five Denverites had tried to have Tom’s Diner at East Colfax Avenue and Pearl Street declared a landmark, describing its low-slung, mountain-range-roofed building as having “architectural, historical and cultural value.” Owner Tom Messina was opposed, saying such a designation would derail a $4.8 million deal to sell his plot to a developer to provide for his retirement.
The preservationists eventually withdrew their application to the Denver Landmark Preservation Commission, saying they hoped instead to work toward some solution with Messina and the developer, who is expected to demolish the diner and build apartments.
Democrat presidential candidates need to address this wee problem with their proposals WRT climate change. Doing something that works is more effective than just doing something.
The candidates’ proposals accomplish almost none of these things. Democrats berate Republicans for “denying science,” yet there is little science in their position papers. Instead, they believe the answers to climate change are obvious: mandated technologies—like wind, solar, and electric cars—that we’ve already decided are best. We simply need to restrict behaviors—eating meat, air travel—increasingly viewed as problematic. Rather than looking to markets and science to develop better approaches, they want to impose readymade solutions by fiat.
There’s another reason we know that these proposals won’t work: they’ve already been tried. In 2011, Germany launched its ambitious Energiewende plan to shift its power grid from coal and nuclear power to “renewable” wind and solar. The program costs some $36 billion annually, and electricity prices have skyrocketed. Yet Germany’s carbon emissions remain as bad as ever, its air is filthy, and coal strip mines continue to eat into the landscape. The project is an epic failure by any measure.
Black man accused of being a white supremacist, mind blown. ~ I R A Darth Aggie at September 9, 2019 7:28 AM
In my twenties, I attended a kegger thrown by some Nazis. Didn't know beforehand what I was attending, just went with some guys I had recently met to "a party."
The people throwing the party had the swastika flag on the wall, a white cat with Hitler mustache markings, crew cuts, SS tattoos, the works. They sieg heiled each other and looked like they were ready to rumble with the Commies.
Then, a large group of black guys showed up. And everybody hugged and high-fived and the party went on. So, I'm thinking, "did you guys actually read the book?"
I later told a black woman at work about it and she said, "maybe those other guys were black supremacists." Um, that would dictate a fight break out, which it did not. In fact, everyone behaved as if they were all old friends.
Logic is not always omnipresent on this issue. Some self-proclaimed "white supremacists" may not be the scourge they've been made out to be; they may just be idiots who like Nazi regalia and shouting. Ignored, they may just go away. Others, not so much. Maybe the wisdom is in seeing the difference.
It was kind of a surreal experience though, racially-integrated white supremacists.

It isn't quite the The Poseidon Adventure but close enough.
Everybody hated something. I hated the heights. Red Buttons hated the water. Stella [Stevens] hated the dirt and so did Ernest Borgnine. Shelley Winters hated being fat and Jack Albertson hated Shelley Winters.
Much humor is opportunism, as this tweet certainly is.
