The subprime loans were government driven as well. Fannie and Freddie are not your generic companies. They are GSEs. Government Sponsored Enterprise. And no, all that white washing the government tried to do claiming it wasn't involved in the subprime collapse is not persuasive. Just as all the blame shifting people in the government are currently trying to do with student loans. *cough* Elizabeth Warren *cough*

GSEs are FedGov's crony capitalism writ large. Freddie and Fannie handed out salaries and bonuses to people who were in the process of creating an economic disaster.

And when that hit, they were "it's not our fault!" Those 6 figure bonuses sure helped cushion their landing. But hey, we're just a bunch of goobers because we don't trust their expertise.

Ann Althouse had a blog post about this photo of HC. The consensus seems to be that HC is making use of "injectables." It's really common now to get plumpers/fillers in one's cheeks, lips, and deep wrinkles. Althouse contrasts this photo with one from not that long ago where there are more wrinkles in the cheeks but HC looks so much better nevertheless. I've always thought btw that HC has a very pretty face and she's aging fairly well---good hair for one. If an individual school votes to get rid of its fraternal system, why should they be criticized for that? (It isn't just bad behavior, per se, that gives fraternities AND sororities a bad reputation, after all.) I have never heard anything to suggest that the virtues of fraternities and sororities and their members outweigh their faults - or that there's anything truly necessary about them in the first place. (Unlike the police.)

Other than that, I haven't heard of a truly organized movement to abolish ALL fraternal systems.

Every year it's rape, rape by object, date rape, rape of a fraternity brother, rape of a fraternity brother during hazing, rape of a fraternity brother with a foreign objecting during hazing, alcohol poisoning sometimes resulting in death, assault, battery, property destruction - all in the name of turning out well-rounded adults for the business world.

Groupthink plus youth plus alcohol plus the overwhelming desire to fit in and go along with the group ends up with some shmuck getting gang-beaten into a brain damage because the frat mistook the guy for a "rival" frat.

It's like the Catholic church: Why are we condemning the vast majority of good priests with the actions of a few pedos? Because it's been going on forever, it isn't stopping, and the culture creates the problem.

Besides, your 'banning' question is a good one. I mean, how would you stop anyone, really, if they wanted to create a private fraternity off-campus?

Expanding the end-the-frats argument to include police officers and religious minorities is silly, of course, but I took Jay's meaning nonetheless - and I think it's an interesting lead-up to an investigation of how we could change a police force to reduce police violence and police crime and police cover-ups without getting good cops killed.

But I digress.
