They Vote This Crap In And Then Are Shocked At The Consequences
A post on Next Door (aka Twitter for Old People):
Welcome to the effects of Prop 47 and the "progressive" electorate that doesn't think ahead to the unintended consequences.
Here's a bit of Prop 47 from the link just above (don't click on the link because Ballotpedia does some toxic bullshit with "you must update your blah blah blah" link it goes to):
The initiative reduced the classification of most nonviolent property and drug crimes--including theft and fraud for amounts up to $950--from a felony to a misdemeanor. What did the measure do? Some highlights
•Classified certain crimes as misdemeanors instead of felonies unless the defendant has prior convictions for murder, rape, certain sex offenses or certain gun crimes.
•Permitted re-sentencing for those currently serving a prison sentence for any of the offenses that the initiative reduced to misdemeanors. Under Proposition 47, 10,000 inmates were eligible for resentencing, according to Lenore Anderson of Californians for Safety and Justice.
•Required a review of criminal history and risk assessment of any individuals before re-sentencing to ensure that they do not pose a risk to the public.
•The measure required misdemeanor sentencing instead of felony for the following crimes:
--Shoplifting, where the value of property stolen does not exceed $950
--Grand theft, where the value of the stolen property does not exceed $950
--Receiving stolen property, where the value of the property does not exceed $950
--Forgery, where the value of forged check, bond or bill does not exceed $950
--Fraud, where the value of the fraudulent check, draft or order does not exceed $950
--Writing a bad check, where the value of the check does not exceed $950
--Personal use of most illegal drugs
I'm for rehabbing people who are incarcerated (as Mark Ridley-Thomas actively supports), and halfway houses (like those by Mrs. Susan Roberts) upon release, but it was a huge mistake to make crimes under a certain dollar level shrug-off-able by the police.
That's exactly what the police do -- shrug them off. This, in turn, incentivizes committing them over and over.
Burglar: "I do the crime and, if caught, I do no time? Cool! Where's my ski mask and my crowbar?!"

Not unlike New York city, where under Giuliani jumping subway turnstiles was a crime that police cracked down on; and now under the current administration the police rarely bother to do anything.
>NYC Subway turnstile jumpers
And listen to the lady who confronts them back near the end. "What are going to do about it?" The answer is nothing.
The result is a lot of folks do NOT pay their fair fare. So, the rest of us are subsidizing them.

And usage of the subway system climbs (hey, it's free) while the system is denied necessary funding for repairs and maintenance. Money for that has to come out of the city's general fund - denying other programs their necessary funding.

Politicians have been looking to repeal the law of unintended consequences since *checks notes* the first city-states emerged.

They aren’t shocked. The politicians all live in gated communities. I’m betting you don’t.

“Politicians have been looking to repeal the law of unintended consequences...”
“They aren’t shocked. The politicians all live in gated communities.”

In her first sentence, Amy mentioned the “ ‘progressive’ electorate” that was behind Proposition 47. The electorate is voters, not politicians.
Proposition 47 was a referendum passed by VOTERS in California (on November 4, 2014.) It passed 60% to 40%.

What’s the libertarian solution, or response, to people who commit crimes?
JD at December 15, 2019 8:11 PM
JD, you act like libertarians are in any way organized or even unified. If you are asking about the Libertarian Party I imagine the response is:
1. Get high
2. Get laid
But I don't have a very good impression of the Libertarian Party.
