In contrast the less well known fusor actually did enter commercial use, though not as a power source but instead as a source for short lived isotopes. The details about building one always made them net energy negative. There is some scuttlebutt about combining polywell (a refined fusor design) and ion beam technologies to get energy positive, but that is all rumors at this point.
