Can we imagine a better 28-ish hours for Trump than dusk Sunday to 12:01 AM Tuesday? How many more days like this would you need to believe that his re-election is locked in?
Can we imagine a better 28-ish hours for Trump than dusk Sunday to 12:01 AM Tuesday? ~ Crid at February 4, 2020 11:13 PM
While I've never thought of Trump as smart, he does have a certain savvy, following Napoleon's dictate, "Never interfere with your enemy when he is making a mistake."
I thought he would gloat and brag at his SOTU, but he delivered what, for him, was a pretty decent speech. Schiff and Nadler being self-righteous prigs in the Senate trial, the fiasco at the Iowa caucus, and Nancy Pelosi tearing up the speech before Trump left the dais could be the images Republicans need to lock up the re-election and, possibly, win more House seats. They did themselves no favors with any of those.
Trump's made all the right moves while the Democrats have devolved into the gang that can't shoot straight.

Reminds me of Joe Morgan's demand that there be a quota for black players in baseball. The question was asked: "Joe, which white and Hispanic players are you going to ban from the sport to make room?"

Indeed, and the internet reminds upon waking this morning that today the Senate will decline to prosecute. So unless the Norks fire on Hokkaido or fifty in Paris drop from 2019-nCoV, he's going to have a third fantastic day in a row. Like, maybe the best week of a presidency since August '45.
Pelosi may regret her own attempt at Trumpian theatrics: If affirms to Trump voters that the 2016 Lefty pretense of blithe supremacy to his tawdriness was tissue-thin illusion.

The Trump Cosmic Revolution will be incomplete if it doesn't evermore squelch the word problematic—
In particular, her group’s sprawling and opaque structure has frustrated fellow Democrats, with some arguing that ACRONYM’s “company-within-a-company” collection of progressive news sites, consulting services and experimental merchandise vendors lacks transparency regarding its payments to consultants and staff, obscuring potential conflicts of interest or governance issues.
They point to the mix of for-profit entities under the nonprofit parent company as especially problematic.
“People are really frustrated and skeptical about the structure that Tara has created,” said one Democratic operative, who did not want to be quoted for risk of alienation. “There’s a nonprofit and then there are for-profits below it, like a nesting doll. It’s moving money around in a way that’s unclear to people.”

I’ve always thought Trump was smart. Of course I had the benefit of attending law school in New York City where most of my acquaintances and classmates were smart asses.
I think the last year has pretty much demonstrated just how smart he is. But it could, of course, just be brass balls. I dunno.
Certainly a refreshing change from the limp dicks that were elected after Reagan.

Mr. Ellis is a man who understands national politics. As Mickey Kaus once put it, "He has connections...."
"[T]he more you think about it, the more you think the Democratic Party’s best, perhaps only, hope of defeating Donald Trump is Michael Bloomberg."
…Then Trump seems certain to be re-elected.
It seems unlikely that voters, even Trump's forsaken 2016 enthusiasts, are going to elect a consecutive oblivious New York City billionaire as president.

I don't think he's smart in any conventional, intellectual sense. He's crippled by the cowardice of the uninterested… Wounding, in the fullness of time, even his dearest intimates (let alone the rest of us) in response to his pettiest insecurities.
This guy hasn't made a meaningful exploration of a new idea since the 8th grade.
But here's the thing:
He knows the shit out of the 8th grade.
He's spent his life honing those adolescent resentments and machinations— perfecting, across his career, their expression against a lifetime of adversaries and mere counterparts who (for some reason!) thought it was necessary to move expansively through each day toward a more honest, and better-admired, tomorrow… Trump doesn't bother. He's lied and manipulated in every human relationship, and it's worked out fine.
Those who love him remember their rage in the 8th grade perfectly well. They themselves seem never to have moved beyond that last bitter summer before high school, and admire his audacity at not getting sucked up into that whole "adulthood" thing.
When he ridicules Ted Cruz' dork, he's a punk. But when Pelosi shreds her copy of the State of the Union, she's got her eyes off the ball.

So Trump survived impeachment. I will still consider voting for William Weld in the primary, since Trump seems not to have done a lick to reduce the deficit in more than 3 years in office. One measly government shutdown; that was it.
If you are hoping for presidents to limit spending you are going to be repeatedly disappointed Mpetrie98. Read a copy of the constitution. The US government doesn't work that way.
Personally I'm annoyed with the drug prohibition stuff he keeps pushing. I just don't have a better alternative to vote for.

Yeah Trump beat impeachment. But you could see that coming for over a month. Pelosi certainly isn't going to mature over the coming weeks. Her childishly tearing up that speech is just normal behavior for her. Yeah hopefully the coming Democrat primary votes are less embarrassing. But the outcomes of those votes aren't likely to be too wildly different. Sanders has strong support across the nation. Mayor Pete not so much. Polls are still pretty crummy. Pretty much business as usual. This is still Trumps election to lose. As long as he doesn't screw up massively he will get reelected.
It will be interesting to see if the DNC actually lets Sanders become the nominee or if they pull some shenanigans again.
