Ever notice when you scrunch a kitty's ears together it looks like a short-eared bunny rabbit?
Until they roar. Totally different set of teeth.

Wutiff Minneapolis was really just a beef between a couple of co-workers?

You'd be tempted to say it's all very personal.
Except maybe not.

It's four in the morning, six at MSP, and their local news is showing fires still being put out in the dawn light. Cops got chased out of a police station last night.
All this information is both obscured and unreliable yet electrically obvious at the same time.

A few days ago you asked if New York is over. Today I ask if Hong Kong is over. After all the main things propping up the island city were favorable taxes and trade policies, both of which are gone as it becomes just another part of China.

Wutiff Minneapolis was really just a beef between a couple of co-workers?
Well, that's a kick in the pants. Did not see that coming. That bit of info that the dude's bro-in-law was present just another kick.
I think my 72 hour rule just became 144 hours.

Today I ask if Hong Kong is over.
Where have you been? they've been over for a while, unless something unexpected happens.
While HK has the cultural inclination towards freedom they are just a single city and Xi can extinguish that flame without too much difficulty if he's willing to take some bad press.
I don't see any of the Euroweenies providing any real push back. Those who would be inclinded to push back have more immediate problems to deal with. We didn't do jack after the unpleasantness in 1989. Didn't the CCP receive a most favored nation status a mere 6 years later?
What was the thought? the West is a paper tiger. Change my mind.

Martina Navratilova is a monster.
Crid at May 29, 2020 8:38 AM
Should we riot, I mean, protest, at Martina's home?
I R A Darth Aggie at May 29, 2020 8:40 AM
Oh. I'd heard rumblings that she had some issue that could derail her advancement to a Veep pick. I didn't realize it was this bad.

So I'm not the only one to think of it.
There's a lack of awareness of the world around here is off the charts. Naivete of that magnitude isn't mere stupidity, it's pathology. She's been so isolated and selfish in a lifetime of tennis practices that she has no understanding how many other lives are being lived out there.

I had to look up Martina to see what she had done to command such enmity. What an idiotic tweet.
Perhaps we should start the Martina Navratilova riot at the namesake house. Loot it and burn it down first.

Pillage, then burn:

I would have expected better of someone who lived under Communism. Then I remembered: she was likely a darling of the party and the nomenklatura and lacked for nothing.
Unlike other people in Romania.

So I'm not the only one to think of it.
No. Sadly, she's also not the only rich white person encouraging such behaviour, either.
I would like them to answer a small question: how does burning down housing intended for low income residents a social good?
As for yesterday, I was moving furniture about. My work building is in the process of renovation, and we didn't know if there would be money for new furniture, so we kept everything that wasn't already trash. We're getting new furniture, so now we have to sort it into keep and "send to surplus" rooms.
I R A Darth Aggie at May 29, 2020 11:37 AM
If you pillage first, you're not protesting, you're looting.
Conan the Grammarian at May 29, 2020 11:51 AM
Lileks finds another example of a white person having the "right beliefs". Apparently, someone in the utility division thought it wise to cut off the flow of natural gas to the abandoned precinct building before it burned. Also, some before pictures.

Of course I can't find it now, but this morning there was a tweet suggesting that in many parts of the world, 'The monkeys came in through the window and stole (and/or despoiled) my careful assemblage of blood samples while I was answering a phone call!' is exactly what you might hear from a lab worker with a less-than-sterling performance history.

Have we heard about the viral video of Orange County's bratty Shelley Lewis by now, who is too dumb to distinguish between HIPAA and ADA?
She's pretty dumb in other ways, too, as the majority of the commentators pointed out.

Trouble is, at least two commentators are woefully ignorant and arrogant as well. One included the hashtag masksarethenewswastikas.

I'm including it because the narrator included a few doctors' responses to all those maskless whiners who say "what about MY condition, whaaaaa?!"
Besides, it always feels great to come across a young YouTuber who doesn't use "like" ungrammatically. Granted, the more professional YouTubers are usually good about that.

I realize, of course, that Amy Cooper wasn't fired merely for SAYING something awful off the job; she was practically committing a crime. (Not to mention, of course, that once it went public, her employers had no real choice.)
However, while the situation below was clearly far less serious, it's easy enough to imagine that Cooper just might be saying to herself, right now, what the unnamed man said. (I wonder if Cooper's mentally ill? Whether she is or not, she may never understand why what she did was so wrong.)
The column is by Renée Graham, who's probably in her mid-late 50s by now.

"...I once worked with a woman who was so upset about a sexist remark made by a male co-worker that she reported him to their supervisor. He was briefly suspended, and some men were resentful that this woman dared to complain at all. While discussing the issue, a male colleague said to me, 'God, remember the days when you could just say anything?'
"Without hesitation, I said, 'No.'
"I had never known a time when I could just say anything, not as a black woman in a world I saw as predominately white and male. My opinion was rarely solicited and certainly not valued, so I kept it to myself. After years of both implicit and explicit silencing, when I finally found the confidence to speak my mind, that liberation overwhelmed me. Yet initially I only understood that I had a voice; how to use it effectively came later through writing, debates, and peaceful protests..."

> For the record
While convincing charges have been filed, I'd say the record remains very much open in all respects.
It's been five days, three of them shattered by violence across the neighborhoods, now across the continent, and poisoned by the deepest personal-identity vituperation in electronic media… Who knows what mutual acquaintances could know but might now keep forever to themselves, perhaps forevermore. Yesterday came a rumor that two of the arresting officers were brothers-in-law; today we learned there's another camera angle showing as many as eight officers involved in the atrocity.
Ramble repeated one last lesson for the month of May: We'll see.

Cleveland and Miami are quiet
Denver, lots of protests, rubber bullets, small fires.

Dallas and Houston are moderately armed. You protest politely or you get shot.
As I understand things Plano, Tx (a suburb of Dallas) is the most heavily armed city in the US.
